A content and comparative analysis of strategic management research in the Baltic area
Purpose
– The purpose of this paper is to provide a research agenda for qualitative studies in the field of strategic management (SM) in the Baltic area.
Design/methodology/approach
– A total of 167 SM-related articles in this area between 2000 and 2013 were found. The content within title, abstract and authors’ keywords was analysed by means of a multiple correspondence analysis based on the HOMALS technique.
Findings
– The intellectual structure of SM in the Baltic area is to some extent similar to the global structure of the field. Hence research on this topic in the Baltic area is well integrated in the field. Three topics of interest have been identified while the fourth seems to offer more limited opportunities for qualitative studies. These are: entry and competition; strategic behaviour and the micro-foundations of strategy; the growth-performance relationship; and global strategies.
Research limitations/implications
– Despite the modest number of articles in our sample, the findings are consistent with past research on the structure of the SM field. The classification of articles into qualitative- and quantitative-based methods helped provide a research agenda.
Practical implications
– SM scholars in the Baltic area may find this paper as an interesting input to their quest for finding and justifying their own research path.
Originality/value
– This is an original literature review. The use of a quantitative method in the literature review and the suggested matrix is a second original contribution to evolving methodologies for content analysis. The method allows the inclusion of large samples while limiting the use of scholars’ intuition.

Predictive ability of the ISS, NISS, and APACHE II score for SIRS and sepsis in polytrauma patients
Purpose: Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and sepsis as causes of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) remain challenging to treat in polytrauma patients. In this study, the focus was set on widely used scoring systems to assess their diagnostic quality. Methods: A total of 512 patients (mean age: 39.2±16.2, range: 16-88years) who had an Injury Severity Score (ISS) ≥17 were included in this retrospective study. The patients were subdivided into four groups: no SIRS, slight SIRS, severe SIRS, and sepsis. The ISS, New Injury Severity Score (NISS), Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) scores, and prothrombin time were collected at admission. The Kruskal-Wallis test and χ2-test, multinomial regression analysis, and kernel density estimates were performed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis is reported as the area under the curve (AUC). Data were considered as significant if p<0.05. Results: All variables were significantly different in all groups (p<0.001). The odds ratio increased with increasing SIRS severity for NISS (slight vs. no SIRS, 1.06, p=0.07; severe vs. no SIRS, 1.07, p=0.04; and sepsis vs. no SIRS, 1.11, p=0.0028) and APACHE II score (slight vs. no SIRS, 0.97, p=0.44; severe vs. no SIRS, 1.08, p=0.02; and sepsis vs. no SIRS, 1.12, p=0.0028). ROC analysis revealed that the NISS (slight vs. no SIRS, AUC 0.61; severe vs. no SIRS, AUC 0.67; and sepsis vs. no SIRS, AUC 0.77) and APACHE II score (slight vs. no SIRS, AUC 0.60; severe vs. no SIRS, AUC 0.74; and sepsis vs. no SIRS, AUC 0.82) had the best predictive ability for SIRS and sepsis. Conclusion: Quick assessment with the NISS or APACHE II score could preselect possible candidates for sepsis following polytrauma and provide guidance in trauma surgeons' decision-makin
Q-dependence of the inelastic neutron scattering cross section for molecular spin clusters with high molecular symmetry
For powder samples of polynuclear metal complexes the dependence of the
inelastic neutron scattering intensity on the momentum transfer Q is known to
be described by a combination of so called interference terms. They reflect the
interplay between the geometrical structure of the compound and the spatial
properties of the wave functions involved in the transition. In this work, it
is shown that the Q-dependence is strongly interrelated with the molecular
symmetry of molecular nanomagnets, and, if the molecular symmetry is high
enough, is actually completely determined by it. A general formalism connecting
spatial symmetry and interference terms is developed. The arguments are
detailed for cyclic spin clusters, as experimentally realized by e.g. the

Immunogenicity and safety of yellow fever vaccination for 102 HIV-infected patients
BACKGROUND: Yellow fever vaccine (17DV) has been investigated incompletely in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients, and adequate immunogenicity and safety are of concern in this population. METHODS: In the Swiss HIV Cohort Study, we identified 102 patients who received 17DV while they were HIV infected. We analyzed neutralization titers (NTs) after 17DV administration using the plaque reduction neutralization test. NTs of 1:>or=10 were defined as reactive, and those of 1:<10 were defined as nonreactive, which was considered to be nonprotective. The results were compared with data for HIV-uninfected individuals. Serious adverse events were defined as hospitalization or death within 6 weeks after receipt of 17DV. RESULTS: At the time of 17DV administration, the median CD4 cell count was 537 cells/mm(3) (range, 11-1730 cells/mm(3)), and the HIV RNA level was undetectable in 41 of 102 HIV-infected patients. During the first year after vaccination, fewer HIV-infected patients (65 [83%] of 78; P = .01) than HIV-uninfected patients revealed reactive NTs, and their NTs were significantly lower (P < .001) than in HIV-uninfected individuals. Eleven patients with initially reactive NTs lost these reactive NTs <or= 5 years after vaccination. Higher NTs during the first year after vaccination were associated with undetectable HIV RNA levels, increasing CD4 cell count, and female sex. We found no serious adverse events after 17DV administration among HIV-infected patients. CONCLUSION: Compared with HIV-uninfected individuals, HIV-infected patients respond to 17DV with lower reactive NTs, more often demonstrate nonprotective NTs, and may experience a more rapid decline in NTs during follow-up. Vaccination with 17DV appears to be safe in HIV-infected individuals who have high CD4 cell counts, although rate of serious adverse events of up to 3% cannot be exclude
Band Calculations for Ce Compounds with AuCu-type Crystal Structure on the basis of Dynamical Mean Field Theory I. CePd and CeRh
Band calculations for Ce compounds with the AuCu-type crystal structure
were carried out on the basis of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The
auxiliary impurity problem was solved by a method named NCAvc
(noncrossing approximation including the state as a vertex correction).
The calculations take into account the crystal-field splitting, the spin-orbit
interaction, and the correct exchange process of the virtual excitation. These are necessary features in the
quantitative band theory for Ce compounds and in the calculation of their
excitation spectra. The results of applying the calculation to CePd and
CeRh are presented as the first in a series of papers. The experimental
results of the photoemission spectrum (PES), the inverse PES, the
angle-resolved PES, and the magnetic excitation spectra were reasonably
reproduced by the first-principles DMFT band calculation. At low temperatures,
the Fermi surface (FS) structure of CePd is similar to that of the band
obtained by the local density approximation. It gradually changes into a form
that is similar to the FS of LaPd as the temperature increases, since the
band shifts to the high-energy side and the lifetime broadening becomes
