Effective moving cast shadow detection for monocular color image sequences
For an accurate scene analysis in monocular image sequences, a robust segmentation of a moving object from the static background is generally required. However, the existence of moving cast shadow may lead to an inaccurate object segmentation, and as a result, lead to further erroneous scene analysis. An effective detection of moving cast shadow in monocular color image sequences is developed. Firstly, by realizing the various characteristics of shadow in luminance, chrominance, and gradient density, an indicator, called shadow confidence score, of the probability of the region classified as cast shadow is calculated. Secondly the canny edge detector is employed to detect edge pixels in the detected region. These pixels are then bounded by their convex hull, which estimates the position of the object. Lastly, by analyzing the shadow confidence score and the bounding hull, the cast shadow is identified as those regions outside the bounding hull and with high shadow confidence score. A number of typical outdoor scenes are evaluated and it is shown that our method can effectively detect the associated cast shadow from the object of interest.published_or_final_versio
Lateral tibial condyle reconstruction by pedicled vascularized fibular head graft: Long-term result
The technique of pedicled vascularized fibular graft for lateral tibial condyle reconstruction after en bloc resection of aggressive giant cell tumours was described by SP Chow et al. Early follow-up of two patients was presented in 1986. We present the 25 years follow-up of one patient with a literature review of alternative present day treatment options. The patient maintained community ambulant status despite developing late stage osteoarthritis. Although this procedure is performed rarely, it remains an alternative to the more sophisticated treatment options making it a useful method in centres with limited facilities and expertise. © 2011 The Author(s).published_or_final_versio

Order statistic correlation coefficient and its application to association measurement of biosignals
In this paper we propose a novel and fast nonlinear association measure based on order statistics and rearrangement inequality. We employ one episode of heart signal, one episode of EEG signal and 1000 white Gaussian noises in our study. Extensive statistical analysis are performed based on one linear model and one nonlinear model. Comparative studies with three other prominent methods are presented. Theoretical derivations and experimental results suggest that our new method has small biasedness, high sensitivity to changes in association, fast computational speed, and robustness under monotone nonlinear transformations. © 2006 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

Electrocardiographic patch devices and contemporary wireless cardiac monitoring.
Cardiac electrophysiologic derangements often coexist with disorders of the circulatory system. Capturing and diagnosing arrhythmias and conduction system disease may lead to a change in diagnosis, clinical management and patient outcomes. Standard 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG), Holter monitors and event recorders have served as useful diagnostic tools over the last few decades. However, their shortcomings are only recently being addressed by emerging technologies. With advances in device miniaturization and wireless technologies, and changing consumer expectations, wearable “on-body” ECG patch devices have evolved to meet contemporary needs. These devices are unobtrusive and easy to use, leading to increased device wear time and diagnostic yield. While becoming the standard for detecting arrhythmias and conduction system disorders in the outpatient setting where continuous ECG monitoring in the short to medium term (days to weeks) is indicated, these cardiac devices and related digital mobile health technologies are reshaping the clinician-patient interface with important implications for future healthcare delivery
Order statistics correlation coefficient as a novel association measurement with applications to biosignal analysis
In this paper, we propose a novel correlation coefficient based on order statistics and rearrangement inequality. The proposed coefficient represents a compromise between the Pearson's linear coefficient and the two rank-based coefficients, namely Spearman's rho and Kendall's tau. Theoretical derivations show that our coefficient possesses the same basic properties as the three classical coefficients. Experimental studies based on four models and six biosignals show that our coefficient performs better than the two rank-based coefficients when measuring linear associations; whereas it is well able to detect monotone nonlinear associations like the two rank-based coefficients. Extensive statistical analyses also suggest that our new coefficient has superior anti-noise robustness, small biasedness, high sensitivity to changes in association, accurate time-delay detection ability, fast computational speed, and robustness under monotone nonlinear transformations. © 2007 IEEE.published_or_final_versio
Nature of the acceptor responsible for p-type conduction in liquid encapsulated Czochralski-grown undoped gallium antimonide
The acceptors in undoped liquid encapsulated Czochralski (LEC)-grown GaSb were investigated using temperature dependent Hall (TDH) and positron lifetime spectroscopy measurements. TDH measurements were performed on nonirradiated and electron irradiated undoped samples. The 34 meV acceptor was found to be the important one responsible for the p-type conduction in nonirradiated and the e--irradiated undoped materials annealed at temperatures up to 500°C. This acceptor was not related to any VGa-related defect detected and was most likely the GaSb antisite.published_or_final_versio
