Incidence and treatment of rejection episodes in primary orthotopic liver transplantation under FK 506.

FK 506 therapy with low doses of steroids was adequate to control rejection in most liver recipients. Rejection episodes were readily reversed with single IV doses of methylprednisone or hydrocortisone. Short courses of OKT3 (3 to 5 days 5-10 mL) controlled severe rejections. The rate of retransplantation directly due to rejection was low (1.6%). There was a limited need for steroids either early or out to 6 to 12 months

Berry's phase for coherent states of Landau levels

The Berry phases for coherent states and squeezed coherent states of Landau levels are calculated. Coherent states of Landau levels are interpreted as a result of a magnetic flux moved adiabatically from infinity to a finite place on the plane. The Abelian Berry phase for coherent states of Landau levels is an analog of the Aharonov- Bohm effect. Moreover, the non-Abelian Berry phase is calculated for the adiabatic evolution of the magnetic field B.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

Donor species complement after liver xenotransplantation: The mechanism of protection from hyperacute rejection

Hamster hearts transplanted into stable rat recipients of hamster livers (OLT rats) were hyperacutely rejected after transfer with unaltered rat antihamster hyperimmune serum (HS). This was followed by immediate liver xenograft rejection in 4 of 5 rats. In contrast, simple heat inactivation of the rat HS resulted in prolonged survival of hamster hearts to 25 days without deterioration effect in the liver xenografts. This effect was species-specific because third-party mouse heart grafts in OLT rats were hyperacutely rejected in minutes if either active or heat inactivated antimouse HS was given. In cytotoxicity experiments, the complement in OLT serum produced weak lysis of hamster lymphocytes, while efficiently doing so with mouse cell targets. Because normal hamster serum caused no lysis at all of hamster target cells, the residual low-grade lysis of OLT serum was possibly being mediated by extrahepatic sources of rat C. In conclusion, the homology of C and target cells represents a mechanism of protection that the liver confers to other organs, and that is most easily seen in xenografts but may be allospecifically operational with allografts as well within the limits of MHC restriction. © 1994 by Williams and Wilkins

Modelling the sound absorption of panels with tapered elliptic micro-perforations

A theoretical model is developed in the present study to predict the spectral characteristics of the sound absorption of solid panels with tapered elliptic micro-perforations backed by a rigid wall cavity. In the model, plane wave propagation is assumed along the length of the perforation in the presence of a viscous boundary layer at the internal wall of the perforation. End impedances are approximated using results in existing literature. Validation is done using impedance tube measurements. It is confirmed that the present tapered elliptic perforation model can give much better agreement with experimental results than the conventional cylindrical perforation model for all micro-perforation configurations tested. Results also suggest the importance of perforation density in controlling the variation of sound absorption of the panel absorbers upon changes in perforation configurations
