    The final fate of instability of Reissner-Nordstr\"om-anti-de Sitter black holes by charged complex scalar fields

    We investigate instability of 4-dimensional Reissner-Nordstr\"om-anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS4_4) black holes with various topologies by charged scalar field perturbations. We numerically find that the RN-AdS4_4 black holes become unstable against the linear perturbations below a critical temperature. It is analytically shown that charge extraction from the black holes occurs during the unstable evolution. To explore the end state of the instability, we perturbatively construct static black hole solutions with the scalar hair near the critical temperature. It is numerically found that the entropy of the hairly black hole is always larger than the one of the unstable RN-AdS4_4 black hole in the microcanonical ensemble. Our results support the speculation that the black hole with charged scalar hair always appears as the final fate of the instability of the RN-AdS4_4 black hole.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures.     Photonic-crystal nano-photodetector with ultrasmall capacitance for on-chip light-to-voltage conversion without an amplifier

    The power consumption of a conventional photoreceiver is dominated by that of the electric amplifier connected to the photodetector (PD). An ultralow-capacitance PD can overcome this limitation, because it can generate sufficiently large voltage without an amplifier when combined with a high-impedance load. In this work, we demonstrate an ultracompact InGaAs PD based on a photonic crystal waveguide with a length of only 1.7 μm and a capacitance of less than 1 fF. Despite the small size of the device, a high responsivity of 1 A/W and a clear 40 Gbit/s eye diagram are observed, overcoming the conventional trade-off between size and responsivity. A resistor-loaded PD was actually fabricated for light-to-voltage conversion, and a kilo-volt/watt efficiency with a gigahertz bandwidth even without amplifiers was measured with an electro-optic probe. Combined experimental and theoretical results reveal that a bandwidth in excess of 10 GHz can be expected, leading to an ultralow energy consumption of less than 1 fJ/bit for the photoreceiver. Amplifier-less PDs with attractive performance levels are therefore feasible and a step toward a densely integrated photonic network/processor on a chip

    An Effective Three-Dimensional Layout of Actuation Body Force for Separation Control

    We conducted large eddy simulations of the control of separated flow over an airfoil using body forces and discuss the role of a three-dimensional vortex structure in separation control. Two types of cases are examined: (1) the body force is distributed in a spanwise uniform layout and (2) the body force is distributed in a spanwise intermittent layout, with three-dimensional vortices being expected to be generated in the latter cases. The flow fields in the latter cases have a shorter separation bubble than those in the former cases although the total momentum of the body force in the latter cases is the same as or half of the former cases. In the flow fields of the latter type, the three-dimensional vortices, which are not observed in the former cases, are generated by the body force downstream of the body force distributed. Thus, three-dimensional vortices are considered to be effective in controlling the separated flow

Surveillance of oocysts on the surface of intestinal epithelial cells is needed for early and appropriate detection of Cryptosporidium infection in transplant recipients on immunosuppressants with severe intractable diarrhea.     Mammalian Target of Rapamycin Inhibitors Permit Regulatory T Cell Reconstitution and Inhibit Experimental Chronic Graft-versus-Host Disease

    Chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) remains a major late complication of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT). In a previous study, impaired thymic negative selection of the recipients permitted the emergence of pathogenic T cells that cause chronic GVHD using MHC class II-deficient (H2-Ab1 KO) B6 into OH model and CD4(+) T cells isolated from chronic GVHD mice caused chronic GVHD when administered into the secondary recipients. In this study, we evaluated the kinetics of regulatory T cell (Treg) reconstitution in wild type B6 into C3H model. After myeloablative conditioning, host Tregs disappeared rapidly, followed by expansion of Tregs derived from the donor splenic T cell inoculum. However, the donor splenic T cell derived Treg pool contracted gradually and was almost completely replaced by newly generated donor bone marrow (BM)-derived Tregs in the late post-transplantation period. Next, we compared the effects of cyclosporine (CSA) and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitors on Treg reconstitution. Administration of CSA significantly impaired Treg reconstitution in the spleen and thymus. In contrast, BM-derived Treg reconstitution was not impaired in mTOR inhibitor-treated mice. Histopathological examination indicated that mice treated with GSA, but not mTOR inhibitors, showed pathogenic features of chronic GVHD on day 120. Mice treated with CSA until day 60, but not mTOR inhibitors, developed severe chronic GVHD followed by adoptive transfer of the pathogenic CD4(+) T cells isolated from H2-Ab1 KO into C3H model. These findings indicated that long-term use of CSA impairs reconstitution of BM-derived Tregs and increases the liability to chronic GVHD. The choice of immunosuppression, such as calcineurin inhibitor-free GVHD prophylaxis with mTOR inhibitor, may have important implications for the control of chronic GVHD after BMT

    Tumor Occupation in the Spinal Canal and Clinical Symptoms of Cauda Equina Schwannoma: An Analysis of 22 Cases

    Study DesignRetrospective, radiological study.PurposeTo determine the relationship between clinical symptoms and the extent of tumor occupation of the spinal canal by cauda equina schwannoma.Overview of LiteratureLittle is known about the relationship between the size of tumors of the cauda equina and the manifestation of clinical symptoms. We analyzed this relationship by estimating the percentage of tumor occupation (PTO) in the spinal canal in cauda equina schwannomas and by correlating this parameter with the presence and severity of clinical symptoms.MethodsTwenty-two patients (9 men and 13 women; age, 19–79 years; mean age, 55.3 years) who were radiologically diagnosed with schwannomas of the cauda equina between April 2004 and July 2014 were retrospectively analyzed. PTO was measured in axial and sagittal magnetic resonance imaging slices in which the cross-sectional area of the tumor was the largest. Data regarding clinical symptoms and results of physical examinations were collected from patient medical records. PTO differences between symptom-positive and -negative groups were analyzed for each variable.ResultsIn the 4 cases in which tumor presence was not related to clinical symptoms, PTO was 5%–10% (mean, 9%) in axial slices and 23%–31% (mean, 30%) in sagittal slices. In the 18 cases in which symptoms were associated with the tumor, PTO was 11%–86% (mean, 50%) in axial slices and 43%–88% (mean, 71%) in sagittal slices. PTO in axial slices was significantly higher in the presence of Déjèrine symptoms and/or muscle weakness, a positive straight leg raise test, and a positive Kemp sign.ConclusionsPTO >20% in axial slices and >40% in sagittal slices can be an indication of symptomatic cauda equina schwannoma

    Balloon Enteroscopy-Assisted Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography for the Treatment of Common Bile Duct Stones in Patients with Roux-en-Y Gastrectomy: Outcomes and Factors Affecting Complete Stone Extraction

    Background: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for extraction of common bile duct (CBD) stones in patients with Roux-en-Y gastrectomy (RYG) remains technically challenging. Methods: Seventy-nine RYG patients (median 79 years old) underwent short-type double-balloon enteroscopy-assisted ERCP (sDBE-ERCP) for CBD stones at three referral hospitals from 2011-2020. We retrospectively investigated the treatment outcomes and potential factors affecting complete stone extraction. Results: The initial success rates of reaching the papilla of Vater, biliary cannulation, and biliary intervention, including complete stone extraction or biliary stent placement, were 92%, 81%, and 78%, respectively. Of 57 patients with attempted stone extraction, complete stone extraction was successful in 74% for the first session and ultimately in 88%. The adverse events rate was 5%. The multivariate analysis indicated that the largest CBD diameter >= 14 mm (odds ratio (OR), 0.04; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.01-0.58; p = 0.018) and retroflex position (OR, 6.43; 95% CI, 1.12-36.81; p = 0.037) were independent predictive factors affecting complete stone extraction achievement. Conclusions: Therapeutic sDBE-ERCP for CBD stones in a relatively elderly RYG cohort, was effective and safe. A larger CBD diameter negatively affected complete stone extraction, but using the retroflex position may be useful for achieving complete stone clearance
