    Guanxi and the organization of Chinese new year festivals in England

    This article explores how Chinese diaspora communities use guanxi, a unique Chinese interpretation of personal relationships, in the organization of Chinese New Year (CNY) festivals in England. A case-study approach that incorporated mixed qualitative methods was used to investigate the interactions and interrelationships between the ethnic Chinese communities involved in the organization of CNY festivals in five English cities. The article argues that Chinese diaspora communities use their guanxi to establish collaboration at CNY festivals. However, the process of organizing CNY festivals has also exposed divisions among Chinese communities. The article proposes that guanxi has important implications for the relationships among Chinese diaspora communities in the context of CNY festivals. Although it facilitates collaboration and promotes solidarity among Chinese communities, it may also intensify competition for power. Diaspora festivals in general are a neglected area of research and this article is the first to study the organization of Chinese New Year festivals in detail

    Riemannian curvature measures

    A famous theorem of Weyl states that if MM is a compact submanifold of euclidean space, then the volumes of small tubes about MM are given by a polynomial in the radius rr, with coefficients that are expressible as integrals of certain scalar invariants of the curvature tensor of MM with respect to the induced metric. It is natural to interpret this phenomenon in terms of curvature measures and smooth valuations, in the sense of Alesker, canonically associated to the Riemannian structure of MM. This perspective yields a fundamental new structure in Riemannian geometry, in the form of a certain abstract module over the polynomial algebra R[t]\mathbb R[t] that reflects the behavior of Alesker multiplication. This module encodes a key piece of the array of kinematic formulas of any Riemannian manifold on which a group of isometries acts transitively on the sphere bundle.     STA: Spatial-Temporal Attention for Large-Scale Video-based Person Re-Identification

    In this work, we propose a novel Spatial-Temporal Attention (STA) approach to tackle the large-scale person re-identification task in videos. Different from the most existing methods, which simply compute representations of video clips using frame-level aggregation (e.g. average pooling), the proposed STA adopts a more effective way for producing robust clip-level feature representation. Concretely, our STA fully exploits those discriminative parts of one target person in both spatial and temporal dimensions, which results in a 2-D attention score matrix via inter-frame regularization to measure the importances of spatial parts across different frames. Thus, a more robust clip-level feature representation can be generated according to a weighted sum operation guided by the mined 2-D attention score matrix. In this way, the challenging cases for video-based person re-identification such as pose variation and partial occlusion can be well tackled by the STA. We conduct extensive experiments on two large-scale benchmarks, i.e. MARS and DukeMTMC-VideoReID. In particular, the mAP reaches 87.7% on MARS, which significantly outperforms the state-of-the-arts with a large margin of more than 11.6%.Comment: Accepted as a conference paper at AAAI 201
