    The aim of BEHAVIOR was the development of elementary components of model based expert systems, to integrate them into prototypes, and to evaluate the results and implementation in a realistic application. The activities have been based on the results of the previous project TEX-B. They are given by fundamental methods for knowledge representation, reasoning techniques, and first integrated systems. The integrated systems coming out of TEX-B are experimental systems. Within TEX-B they had been used to get a better understanding of the problems of model based reasoning, in general, and to find ideas of how to solve the principle problems still existing in that field. Within BEHAVIOR the Fraunhofer Institute of Information- and Dataprocessing concentrates on the development of the model based diagnostic system MuDia and its evaluation. Besides this, research was done in the fields of modelling for diagnosis and of flexible usage of distinct knowledge sources and representations. Especially a modelling framework was developed, which is powerful enough to handle different representation approaches (component oriented, process oriented, quantitativ, qualitativ etc.) including their related analysing techniques in a supplement manner. A ballast water tank system was the common application domain within BEHAVIOR. All the analysing and diagnostic activities were done on realistic failure situations of this application domain.
