Defining and measuring health literacy: how can we profit from other literacy domains?
When the antecedents of health-promoting behavior are explored, the concept of health literacy is deemed a factor of major influence. Originally defined as reading, writing and numeracy skills in the health domain, health literacy is now considered a multidimensional concept. The ongoing discussion on health literacy reveals that no agreement exists about which dimensions to include in the concept. To contribute to the development of a consistent and parsimonious concept of health literacy, we conducted a critical review of concepts in other literacy domains. Our review was guided by two research questions: (i) Which dimensions are included in the concepts of other literacy domains? (ii) How can health literacy research profit from other literacy domains? Based on articles collected from PubMed, PsycINFO, Communication & Mass Media Complete, CINAHL, SAGE Full-Text Collection, Cochrane Library and Google Scholar as well as selected monographs and editions, we identified seven distinct dimensions. Some of the dimensions recur across all reviewed literacy domains and first attempts have been made to operationalize the dimensions. Apelin Controls Angiogenesis-Dependent Glioblastoma Growth
Glioblastoma (GBM) present with an abundant and aberrant tumor neo-vasculature. While rapid growth of solid tumors depends on the initiation of tumor angiogenesis, GBM also progress by infiltrative growth and vascular co-option. The angiogenic factor apelin (APLN) and its receptor (APLNR) are upregulated in GBM patient samples as compared to normal brain tissue. Here, we studied the role of apelin/APLNR signaling in GBM angiogenesis and growth. By functional analysis of apelin in orthotopic GBM mouse models, we found that apelin/APLNR signaling is required for in vivo tumor angiogenesis. Knockdown of tumor cell-derived APLN massively reduced the tumor vasculature. Additional loss of the apelin signal in endothelial tip cells using the APLN-knockout (KO) mouse led to a further reduction of GBM angiogenesis. Direct infusion of the bioactive peptide apelin-13 rescued the vascular loss-of-function phenotype specifically. In addition, APLN depletion massively reduced angiogenesis-dependent tumor growth. Consequently, survival of GBM-bearing mice was significantly increased when APLN expression was missing in the brain tumor microenvironment. Thus, we suggest that targeting vascular apelin may serve as an alternative strategy for anti-angiogenesis in GBM
Photoelectron spectroscopy of the hydroxymethoxide anion, H 2 C(OH)O −
We report the negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy of the hydroxymethoxide anion, H2C(OH)O − . The photoelectron spectra show that 3.49 eV photodetachment produces two distinct electronic states of the neutral hydroxymethoxy radical (H2C(OH)O · ). The H2C(OH)O · ground state (X˜ 2A) photoelectron spectrum exhibits a vibrational progression consisting primarily of the OCO symmetric and asymmetric stretches, the OCO bend, as well as combination bands involving these modes with other, lower frequency modes. A high-resolution photoelectron spectrum aids in the assignment of several vibrational frequencies of the neutral H2C(OH)O · radical, including an experimental determination of the H2C(OH)O · 2ν12 overtone of the H–OCO torsional vibration as 220(10) cm−1 . The electron affinity of H2C(OH)O · is determined to be 2.220(2) eV. The low-lying A˜ 2A excited state is also observed, with a spectrum that peaks ∼0.8 eV above the X˜ 2A state origin. The A˜ 2A state photoelectron spectrum is a broad, partially resolved band. Quantum chemical calculations and photoelectron simulations aid in the interpretation of the photoelectron spectra. In addition, the gas phase acidity of methanediol is calculated to be 366(2) kcal mol−1 , which results in an OH bond dissociation energy, D0(H2C(OH)O–H), of 104(2) kcal mol−1 , using the experimentally determined electron affinity of the hydroxymethoxy radical
A prospective randomized controlled trial assessing the effect of music on patients’ anxiety in venous catheter placement procedures
The aim of the study was to assess the influence of music on anxiety levels compared to standard patient care in patients undergoing venous catheter placement procedures. This prospective randomized controlled trial included patients undergoing placement procedures for peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICC), ports and central venous catheters (CVC). Patients were randomly assigned to a music intervention group (MIG) and a control group (CTRL). State and trait anxiety levels were assessed as primary outcome using the state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI) before and after the procedures. Secondary outcomes comprised averaged heart rate for all participants and time of radiological surveillance for port placement procedures exclusively. 72 participants were included into the final analysis (MIG n = 40; CTRL n = 32). All procedures were successful and no major complications were reported. Mean levels for post-interventional anxieties were significantly lower in the MIG compared to the CTRL (34.9 +/- 8.9 vs. 44 +/- 12.1; p < 0.001). Mean heart rate in the MIG was significantly lower than in the CTRL (76.1 +/- 13.7 vs. 93 +/- 8.9; p < 0.001). Procedure time for port implantation was significantly longer in the MIG by 3 min 45 s (p = 0.031). CMBPol Mission Concept Study: Foreground Science Knowledge and Prospects
We report on our knowledge of Galactic foregrounds, as well as on how a CMB
satellite mission aiming at detecting a primordial B-mode signal (CMBPol) will
contribute to improving it. We review the observational and analysis techniques
used to constrain the structure of the Galactic magnetic field, whose presence
is responsible for the polarization of Galactic emissions. Although our current
understanding of the magnetized interstellar medium is somewhat limited,
dramatic improvements in our knowledge of its properties are expected by the
time CMBPol flies. Thanks to high resolution and high sensitivity instruments
observing the whole sky at frequencies between 30 GHz and 850 GHz, CMBPol will
not only improve this picture by observing the synchrotron emission from our
galaxy, but also help constrain dust models. Polarized emission from
interstellar dust indeed dominates over any other signal in CMBPol's highest
frequency channels. Observations at these wavelengths, combined with
ground-based studies of starlight polarization, will therefore enable us to
improve our understanding of dust properties and of the mechanism(s)
responsible for the alignment of dust grains with the Galactic magnetic field.
CMBPol will also shed new light on observations that are presently not well
understood. Morphological studies of anomalous dust and synchrotron emissions
will indeed constrain their natures and properties, while searching for
fluctuations in the emission from heliospheric dust will test our understanding
of the circumheliospheric interstellar medium. Finally, acquiring more
information on the properties of extra-Galactic sources will be necessary in
order to maximize the cosmological constraints extracted from CMBPol's

Short- and long-term evaluation of disease-specific symptoms and quality of life following uterine artery embolization of fibroids
Background: The purpose of this study is to evaluate uterine artery embolization (UAE) for the management of symptomatic uterine leiomyomas regarding changes in quality of life after treatment in a large patient collective. This study retrospectively analyzed prospectively acquired standardized questionnaires of patients treated with UAE. Clinical success was evaluated before and after embolization. Patients were stratified into short- (7 months) follow-up groups depending on the time of completion of the post-interventional questionnaire. Uterine leiomyomas were furthermore divided into small (= 10 cm) tumors based on the diameter of the dominant fibroid.
Results: A total of 245 patients were included into the final data analysis. The Kaplan-Meier analysis showed a cumulative clinical success rate of 75.8% after 70 months until the end of follow-up (9.9 years). All questionnaire subscales showed a highly significant clinical improvement from baseline to short- and long-term follow-up (p = 10 cm who had a twofold higher probability of re-intervention in the Cox-regression model.
Conclusions: UAE is an effective treatment method for symptomatic fibroids that leads to quick relief of fibroid-related symptoms with marked improvement of quality of life and is associated with a low risk for re-interventions. Patients with small fibroids tend to show a better response to UAE compared to patients with large fibroids
