Leiomyosarcoma of Bone: A Case Report
The aim of this paper is to present clinicopathologic features and immunohistochemical findings of a primary leiomyosarcoma of bone occurring in the proximal femur of a 46-year-old Caucasian male patient. Each case report on this exceedingly rare entity contributes to the notion of this disease
(Autorenreferat)'The following essay is intended to contribute to the discussion about new orientations in political history going on in German historiography. Instead of opting for either traditional political history or new cultural history of 'the political', it is intended to show that a denser cooperation with political scientists might be a more proper approach to find new ways of talking about politics in history. The most successful theory of action in political science, the Rational Choice research program, is presented as a powerful theoretical foundation for talking about discourses, symbols and institutions; moreover, its use would enable historians to integrate insights from new institutional economics and political economy into historical research.' Managed Forgetting to Support Information Management and Knowledge Work
Trends like digital transformation even intensify the already overwhelming
mass of information knowledge workers face in their daily life. To counter
this, we have been investigating knowledge work and information management
support measures inspired by human forgetting. In this paper, we give an
overview of solutions we have found during the last five years as well as
challenges that still need to be tackled. Additionally, we share experiences
gained with the prototype of a first forgetful information system used 24/7 in
our daily work for the last three years. We also address the untapped potential
of more explicated user context as well as features inspired by Memory
Inhibition, which is our current focus of research.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, preprint, final version to appear in KI -

Familial Aggregation of Urinary Tract and Bone Tumors: Searching for a Syndrome
Positive family anamnesis is an important risk factor for cancer, and therefore further investigations need to be done if familial aggregation of cancer is observed. Due to a rare combination of urinary tract and bone tumors occurring in the family presented herein we hypothesized a hereditary predisposition and thus, Li-Fraumeni syndrome was considered to be the most likely differential diagnosis. To confirm Li-Fraumeni syndrome, we set out to investigate this case by analyzing the tumor suppressor gene p53. However, taking into account all the diagnostic results obtained, Li-Fraumeni syndrome could not be confirmed, but there is still uncertainty regarding a definitive diagnosis
Neue Politische Ökonomie in der Geschichte: vom Dialog der Taubstummen zum interdisziplinären Gespräch
"The cultural turn has reached Political History; German scholars focusing on political history are trying to reconceptualise political history as 'history of the political'. They are receptive to theories, methods and concepts from other disciplines. Still, there is a remarkable desideratum in this search for theories that may be related to historical research: Theories and methods discussed in the empirical-analytical branch of political science that is systematically concerned with political phenomena are seldom discussed and applied to historical phenomena. There are however several exceptions to this rule. Some social scientists have applied rational choice theory and considerations from new political economy to history in recent years. This issue of Historical Social Research is intended to contribute to this bridging of Political Science and History. It presents case studies applying rational choice considerations (mainly new political economy and public choice theories) to history as well as
methodologically interested articles discussing chances and limits of this interdisciplinary endeavour." (author's abstract
The Role of Likes: How Online Feedback Impacts Users' Mental Health
Social media usage has been shown to have both positive and negative
consequences for users' mental health. Several studies indicated that peer
feedback plays an important role in the relationship between social media use
and mental health. In this research, we analyse the impact of receiving online
feedback on users' emotional experience, social connectedness and self-esteem.
In an experimental study, we let users interact with others on a Facebook-like
system over the course of a week while controlling for the amount of positive
reactions they receive from their peers. We find that experiencing little to no
reaction from others does not only elicit negative emotions and stress amongst
users, but also induces low levels of self-esteem. In contrast, receiving much
positive online feedback, evokes feelings of social connectedness and reduces
overall loneliness. On a societal level, our study can help to better
understand the mechanisms through which social media use impacts mental health
in a positive or negative way. On a methodological level, we provide a new
open-source tool for designing and conducting social media experiments
Safety and Precision of Two Different Flap-morphologies Created During Low Energy Femtosecond Laser-assisted LASIK
Purpose: Currently, two major principles exist to create LASIK flaps: firstly, a strictly horizontal (2D) cut similar to the microkeratome-cut and secondly an angled cut with a “step-like” edge (3D). The strictly horizontal (2D) cut method can be performed using apparatus such as the low-energy FEMTO LDV Z8 laser and its predecessors which are specific to this type. Alternatively, the low-energy FEMTO LDV Z8 laser’s 3D flap design creates an interlocking flap-interface surface which potentially contributes toward flap stability. In addition, the FEMTO LDV Z8 offers flap-position adjustments after docking (before flap-creation). The current study analyzed precision, safety, efficacy, as well as patient self-reported pain and comfort levels after applying two different types of LASIK flap morphologies which were created with a low-energy, high-frequency femtosecond (fs) laser device. Methods: A prospective, interventional, randomized, contralateral eye, single-center comparison study was conducted from November 2019 to March 2020 at the Hamburg vision clinic/ zentrumsehstärke, Hamburg, Germany. Eleven patients and 22 eyes received low-energy fs LASIK treatment for myopia or myopic astigmatism in both eyes. Before the treatment, the eyes were randomized (one eye was treated with the 2D, the other eye with the 3D method). Results: The mean central flap thickness one month after surgery was 110.7 ± 1.6 μm (2D) and 111.2 ± 1.7 μm (3D); P = 0.365 (2D vs 3D). Flap thickness measured at 13 different points resulted in no statistically significant differences between any of the measurement points within/between both groups; demonstrating good planarity of the flap was achieved using both methods. Despite not being statistically significant, the surgeons recognized an increase in the presence of an opaque bubble layer in the 3D flap eyes during surgery and some patients reported higher, yet not statistically significant, pain scores in the 3D flap eyes during the first hours after the treatment. Overall, safety- and efficacy indices were 1.03 and 1.03, respectively. Conclusion: In this prospective, randomized, contralateral eye study, the low-energy fs laser yielded predictable lamellar flap thicknesses and geometry at one-month followup. Based on these results, efficacy and safety of the corresponding laser application, that is, 2D vs 3D, are equivalen

Significance of Medicinal Mushrooms in Integrative Oncology: A Narrative Review
Medicinal mushrooms are widely used in East Asia for the treatment of various diseases, especially in complementary cancer care. While there is a growing interest in medicinal mushrooms in Western countries and an increasing number of pre-clinical studies indicate distinct anti-cancer and regenerative properties, little is known about their potential relevance for clinical practice. This review aims to provide an overview of the clinical evidence, significance and potential role of medicinal mushrooms in complementary cancer care. Scientific databases for (randomized) controlled clinical trials evaluating whole spectrum formulations of medicinal mushrooms (mushroom powder and mushroom extracts) in cancer patients during and/or after conventional oncological treatment were searched. Eight studies met our inclusion criteria (eight randomized controlled trials, one controlled clinical trial). The medicinal mushrooms investigated were Agaricus sylvaticus (two trials), Agaricus blazei murill (two trials), Antrodia cinnamomea (one trial), Coriolus versicolor (one trial) and Ganoderma lucidum (three trials); all were compared to placebo and administered orally. A variety of cancer entities, outcomes and treatment durations were observed. Study results suggested beneficial effects of medicinal mushrooms, particularly quality of life and reduction of adverse effects of conventional therapies. Also, positive effects on antitumor activity and immunomodulation were reported, e.g., an increased activity of natural killer cells. In addition, results might suggest a longer survival of cancer patients receiving mushroom preparations, although in most studies this was not significant when compared to placebo. Adverse events of treatment with medicinal mushrooms were poorly reported; gastrointestinal reactions and a decrease in platelet cell count occurred in some cases. The methodological quality of most studies was generally unsatisfying and most results were insufficiently reported in several respects. Medicinal mushrooms may have a therapeutic potential for cancer patients during and after conventional oncological care with regards to quality of life, reduction of adverse effects of conventional care and possibly other surrogate parameters like immune function. There is an urgent need to investigate the safety and possible interactions of medicinal mushrooms. High-quality clinical research is warranted in order to clarify the potential of medicinal mushrooms in cancer therapy
