FUNCTIONAL HEALTH LITERACY AND THE USE OF DENTAL SERVICES IN YOUNG CHILDREN
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine parental Functional Health Literacy and their child’s subsequent utilization of dental services. Methods: This was a prospective cohort study of children (n=1175) enrolled in the Child Health Investment Partnership of Virginia (CHIP). Descriptive statistics and separate multivariate logistic regressions were used to determine the relationship between functional health literacy measures; 1) Health Care Literacy (HCL), 2) Personal Health Literacy (PHL), and 3) LSP 22 scale, with utilization as measured as number of dental visit/s. Results: Descriptive analysis of the cohort reveals: 45% black, 40% white, 10% Hispanic, 5% other, 41% of parents not having a high school diploma or GED, \u3e75% were enrolled in CHIP by the age of one, 90% had Medicaid, 80% lived in Roanoke City, 87% had a normal birth weight, 86% were term pregnancies, and 91% did not have asthma. All literacy measures, PHL, HCL, LSP 22, and LSP 22 Target Range were positively associated with having dental utilization. Hispanic race had a less likely chance of having multiple dental visits even when within target range of LSP 22. Conclusion: Parents of children enrolled in CHIP with higher levels of functional health literacy as measured by the Life Skills Progression Instrument demonstrated an increased likelihood of dental utilization for their children
Introgression, health, and condition of Florida, northern, and Fx hybrid largemouth bass in Louisiana water bodies
Since 1982, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has stocked Florida-strain largemouth bass (FLMB; Micropterus salmoides floridanus) to incorporate Florida alleles into native populations (NLMB; M. s. salmoides) and enhance recreational fishing opportunities. I collected habitat data and largemouth bass samples from 12 LDWF stocked reservoirs and disconnected oxbow lakes to examine the relationships between reservoir characteristics, genetic identity, relative weight (Wr), liver somatic index (LSI), parasite loads, and back-calculated length-at-age. I examined the relationships between water body and genetic identity with Wr, LSI, and back-calculated length-at-age by ANOVA. Parasite loads were analyzed with ordinal regression. Principle component analysis was used to reduce the dataset into a smaller number of principal components and group the study lakes as habitat types. I then used ANOVA to assess whether Wr, LSI, or length-at-age were influenced by genetic strain or habitat type as represented by the principal components and logistic regression to determine whether principal component influenced the abundance of NLMB or non-native largemouth bass. Although similar across bass strains, Wr, LSI, and length-at-age varied by lake (all P\u3c0.0001). Parasite loads were not significantly different between years or among water bodies or genetic strain. Based on the ANOVA results, shallow, nutrient rich lakes with high chlorophyll a concentrations and large littoral zones appeared to promote high Wr and non-native largemouth bass. Conversely, northern largemouth bass were more prevalent, and Wr was lower, in lakes with dense vegetation. Aquatic macrophytes may reduce foraging efficiency of larger, piscivorous fish while increasing survival of young-of-the-year largemouth bass. Reservoirs with little vegetative cover may reduce natural recruitment of resident largemouth bass allowing rapid genetic introgression. These findings may improve our understanding of the effects of FLMB stocking activities and provide the opportunity to modify stocking protocols to better achieve the management goals of the largemouth bass program

Mode of delivery for women with osteogenesis imperfecta type III is generally cesarean delivery. Neonatal outcomes are complicated due to indicated preterm deliveries
Association of Accelerometry-Measured Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Events in Mobility-Limited Older Adults: The LIFE (Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders) Study.
BACKGROUND:Data are sparse regarding the value of physical activity (PA) surveillance among older adults-particularly among those with mobility limitations. The objective of this study was to examine longitudinal associations between objectively measured daily PA and the incidence of cardiovascular events among older adults in the LIFE (Lifestyle Interventions and Independence for Elders) study. METHODS AND RESULTS:Cardiovascular events were adjudicated based on medical records review, and cardiovascular risk factors were controlled for in the analysis. Home-based activity data were collected by hip-worn accelerometers at baseline and at 6, 12, and 24 months postrandomization to either a physical activity or health education intervention. LIFE study participants (n=1590; age 78.9±5.2 [SD] years; 67.2% women) at baseline had an 11% lower incidence of experiencing a subsequent cardiovascular event per 500 steps taken per day based on activity data (hazard ratio, 0.89; 95% confidence interval, 0.84-0.96; P=0.001). At baseline, every 30 minutes spent performing activities ≥500 counts per minute (hazard ratio, 0.75; confidence interval, 0.65-0.89 [P=0.001]) were also associated with a lower incidence of cardiovascular events. Throughout follow-up (6, 12, and 24 months), both the number of steps per day (per 500 steps; hazard ratio, 0.90, confidence interval, 0.85-0.96 [P=0.001]) and duration of activity ≥500 counts per minute (per 30 minutes; hazard ratio, 0.76; confidence interval, 0.63-0.90 [P=0.002]) were significantly associated with lower cardiovascular event rates. CONCLUSIONS:Objective measurements of physical activity via accelerometry were associated with cardiovascular events among older adults with limited mobility (summary score >10 on the Short Physical Performance Battery) both using baseline and longitudinal data. Time for T? Immunoinformatics addresses the challenges of vaccine design for neglected tropical and emerging infectious diseases
Vaccines have been invaluable for global health, saving lives and reducing healthcare costs, while also raising the quality of human life. However, newly emerging infectious diseases (EID) and more well-established tropical disease pathogens present complex challenges to vaccine developers; in particular, neglected tropical diseases, which are most prevalent among the world’s poorest, include many pathogens with large sizes, multistage life cycles and a variety of nonhuman vectors. EID such as MERS-CoV and H7N9 are highly pathogenic for humans. For many of these pathogens, while their genomes are available, immune correlates of protection are currently unknown. These complexities make developing vaccines for EID and neglected tropical diseases all the more difficult. In this review, we describe the implementation of an immunoinformatics-driven approach to systematically search for key determinants of immunity in newly available genome sequence data and design vaccines. This approach holds promise for the development of 21st century vaccines, improving human health everywhere
Reliability and practical aspects of the disease impact measure on hypertensive patients
OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, the ceiling and floor effects and the reliability of the Instrument to Measure the Impact of Coronary Disease on Patient's Daily Life (IDCV) when applied to hypertensive patients. METHOD: one hundred and thirty seven hypertensive outpatients were interviewed, using questionnaires to collect sociodemographic and clinical data, followed by the IDCV. Reliability was assessed according to the temporal stability and internal consistency criteria. RESULTS: the IDCV was applied in 8.0 (±3.0) minutes with 100% of the items answered. A ceiling effect of 31.4% was observed in the domain Adjustment to the Disease. The stability measure was observed for the total score and for all domains. There was evidence of internal consistency of the total IDCV (α=0.83) and the domains Physical Impact of the Disease - Symptoms (α=0.78) and Social and Emotional Impact of the Disease (α=0.74). CONCLUSION: the IDCV is an instrument of easy use and its reliability among hypertensive patients is evidenced. The domain Adjustment to the Disease, however, should be reviewed in further studies

The development of an eating disorders program : a case study
The purpose of this study was to take an in-depth look at The Eating Disorders Program at Monmouth Psychological Associates in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. The question to be answered was how and why the eating disorders program was established. This was a single case qualitative study. Sources of data used to obtain the necessary and appropriate information included opened-ended interview questions, articles from local newspapers, observation, and the facility's philosophy. The results showed that factors such as resources, location, finances, and staff influenced how the program was established while factors such as personal experience and realizing that there was a need for such a facility influenced why the program was established. This information was then constructed into a timeline in order to demonstrate how all factors were interwoven and affected each other and to clarify and understand the chain of events that led to the development of this program
