Quasirandom Rumor Spreading: An Experimental Analysis
We empirically analyze two versions of the well-known "randomized rumor
spreading" protocol to disseminate a piece of information in networks. In the
classical model, in each round each informed node informs a random neighbor. In
the recently proposed quasirandom variant, each node has a (cyclic) list of its
neighbors. Once informed, it starts at a random position of the list, but from
then on informs its neighbors in the order of the list. While for sparse random
graphs a better performance of the quasirandom model could be proven, all other
results show that, independent of the structure of the lists, the same
asymptotic performance guarantees hold as for the classical model. In this
work, we compare the two models experimentally. This not only shows that the
quasirandom model generally is faster, but also that the runtime is more
concentrated around the mean. This is surprising given that much fewer random
bits are used in the quasirandom process. These advantages are also observed in
a lossy communication model, where each transmission does not reach its target
with a certain probability, and in an asynchronous model, where nodes send at
random times drawn from an exponential distribution. We also show that
typically the particular structure of the lists has little influence on the
efficiency.Comment: 14 pages, appeared in ALENEX'0
Design Hourly Volume Estimation at Freeway Nodes from Short-Term Traffic Counts
This paper extends the concept of a design hourly volume (DHV) which is derived from the ânth hourâ to a concept based on the nth highest saturated hour. To calculate this nth highest saturated hour at each ramp junction of a node, permanent traffic counts (PTC) are necessary on all ramps and the main lanes. In practice, such counts are often not available. For such cases, the German HCM proposes a method that enables the estimation of the design hourly volume through short-term traffic counts (STC) and the extrapolation of the results using available PTC in the vicinity. Within the scope of this study, it is examined how accurate the required nth highest saturated hour can be estimated with this method and similar concepts. Furthermore, it is investigated to what extent the number and the location of the available PTC affect the accuracy of the estimation. Scenarios without PTC are also considered. The evaluation is based on a database with a total of 72 freeway nodes for which PTC data from three years (2017-2019) are processed.
The results show that the estimation of the nth highest saturated hour with the method of the German HCM works accurately, even if only one PTC is available on each inflowing approach. The results further indicate that STC are crucial to achieve accurate results when only few PTC are available. Acceptable results are also obtained by STC of one week, even without a projection at a PTC
The role of serum C-reactive protein in the diagnosis of periprosthetic shoulder infection
Introduction: There is a paucity of literature regarding serum C-reactive protein (CRP) in the evaluation of a shoulder periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). The purpose of the current study was to establish cutoff values for diagnosing shoulder PJI and evaluate the influence of the type of infecting microorganism and the classification subgroups according to last proposed International Consensus Meeting (ICM) criteria on the CRP level.
Materials and methods: A retrospective analysis of all 136 patients, who underwent septic or aseptic revision shoulder arthroplasty in our institution between January 2010 and December 2019, was performed. Shoulder PJI was defined according to the last proposed definition criteria of the ICM. Serum CRP levels were compared between infected and non-infected cases, between infection subgroups, as well as between different species of infecting microorganisms. A receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to display sensitivity and specificity of serum CRP level for shoulder PJI.
Results: A total of 52 patients (38%) were classified as infected, 18 meeting the criteria for definitive infection, 26 for probable infection and 8 for possible infection. According to the ROC curve, an optimized serum CRP threshold of 7.2 mg/l had a sensitivity of 69% and specificity of 74% (area under curve = 0.72). Patients with definitive infection group demonstrated significantly higher median serum CRP levels (24.3 mg/l), when compared to probable, possible infection groups and PJI unlikely group (8 mg/l, 8.3 mg/l, 3.6 mg/l, respectively, p < 0.05). The most common isolated microorganism was Cutibacterium acnes in 25 patients (48%) followed by coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) in 20 patients (39%). Patients with a PJI caused by high-virulent microorganisms had a significantly higher median serum CRP level compared to patients with PJI caused by low-virulent microorganisms (48 mg/l vs. 11.3 mg/l, p = 0.04).
Conclusions: Serum CRP showed a low sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of shoulder PJI, even applying cutoffs optimized by receiver-operating curve analysis. Low-virulent microorganisms and patients with probable and possible infections are associated with lower CRP levels compared to patients with definitive infection and infections caused by high-virulent microorganisms

Exploitation of the Timing Capabilities of Metallic Magnetic Calorimeters for a Coincidence Measurement Scheme
In this report, we compare two filter algorithms for extracting timing information using novel metallic magnetic calorimeter detectors, applied to the precision X-ray spectroscopy of highly charged ions in a storage ring. Accurate timing information is crucial when exploiting coincidence conditions for background suppression to obtain clean spectra. For X-rays emitted by charge-changing interactions between ions and a target, this is a well-established technique when relying on conventional semiconductor detectors that offer a good temporal resolution. However, until recently, such a coincidence scheme had never been realized with metallic magnetic calorimeters, which typically feature much longer signal rise times. In this report, we present optimized timing filter algorithms for this type of detector. Their application to experimental data recently obtained at the electron cooler of CRYRING@ESR at GSI, Darmstadt is discussed
Towards an Intrinsic Doppler Correction for X-ray Spectroscopy of Stored Ions at CRYRING@ESR
We report on a new experimental approach for the Doppler correction of X-rays emitted by heavy ions, using novel metallic magnetic calorimeter detectors which uniquely combine a high spectral resolution with a broad bandwidth acceptance. The measurement was carried out at the electron cooler of CRYRING@ESR at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany. The X-ray emission associated with the radiative recombination of cooler electrons and stored hydrogen-like uranium ions was investigated using two novel microcalorimeter detectors positioned under 0â
and 180â
with respect to the ion beam axis. This new experimental setup allowed the investigation of the region of the N, M â L transitions in helium-like uranium with a spectral resolution unmatched by previous studies using conventional semiconductor X-ray detectors. When assuming that the rest-frame energy of at least a few of the recorded transitions is well-known from theory or experiments, a precise measurement of the Doppler shifted line positions in the laboratory system can be used to determine the ion beam velocity using only spectral information. The spectral resolution achievable with microcalorimeter detectors should, for the first time, allow intrinsic Doppler correction to be performed for the precision X-ray spectroscopy of stored heavy ions. A comparison with data from a previous experiment at the ESR electron cooler, as well as the conventional method of conducting Doppler correction using electron cooler parameters, will be discussed

Shadow Banking: Policy Challenges for Central Banks
Central banks responded with exceptional liquidity support during the financial crisis to prevent a systemic meltdown. They broadened their tool kit and extended liquidity support to nonbanks and key financial markets. Many want central banks to embrace this expanded role as "market maker of last resort" going forward. This would provide a liquidity backstop for systemically important markets and the shadow banking system that is deeply integrated with these markets. But how much liquidity support can central banks provide to the shadow banking system without risking their balance sheets? I discuss the expanding role of the shadow banking sector and the key drivers behind its growing importance. There are close parallels between the growth of shadow banking before the recent financial crisis and earlier financial crises, with rapid growth in near monies as a common feature. This ebb and flow of shadow-banking-type liabilities are indeed an ingrained part of our advanced financial system. We need to reflect and consider whether official sector liquidity should be mobilized to stem a future breakdown in private shadow banking markets. Central banks should be especially concerned about providing liquidity support to financial markets without any form of structural reform. It would indeed be ironic if central banks were to declare victory in the fight against too-big-to-fail institutions, just to end up bankrolling too-big-to-fail financial markets
