    Covariant Helicity-Coupling Amplitudes: A New Formulation

    We have worked out covariant amplitudes for any two-body decay of a resonance with an arbitrary non-zero mass, which involves arbitrary integer spins in the initial and the final states. One key new ingredient for this work is the application of the total intrinsic spin operator S\vec S which is given directly in terms of the generators of the Poincar\'e group. Using the results of this study, we show how to explore the Lorentz factors which appear naturally, if the momentum-space wave functions are used to form the covariant decay amplitudes. We have devised a method of constructing our covariant decay amplitudes, such that they lead to the Zemach amplitudes when the Lorentz factors are set one

    Podocytic PKC-Alpha Is Regulated in Murine and Human Diabetes and Mediates Nephrin Endocytosis

    Background: Microalbuminuria is an early lesion during the development of diabetic nephropathy. The loss of high molecular weight proteins in the urine is usually associated with decreased expression of slit diaphragm proteins. Nephrin, is the major component of the glomerular slit diaphragm and loss of nephrin has been well described in rodent models of experimental diabetes as well as in human diabetic nephropathy. Methodology/Principal Findings: In this manuscript we analyzed the role of PKC-alpha (PKCa) on endocytosis of nephrin in podocytes. We found that treatment of diabetic mice with a PKCa-inhibitor (GÖ6976) leads to preserved nephrin expression and reduced proteinuria. In vitro, we found that high glucose stimulation would induce PKCa protein expression in murine and human podocytes. We can demonstrate that PKCa mediates nephrin endocytosis in podocytes and that overexpression of PKCa leads to an augmented endocytosis response. After PKC-activation, we demonstrate an inducible association of PKCa, PICK1 and nephrin in podocytes. Moreover, we can demonstrate a strong induction of PKCa in podocytes of patients with diabetic nephropathy. Conclusions/Significance: We therefore conclude that activation of PKCa is a pathomechanistic key event during the development of diabetic nephropathy.     Adsorption of hydrogen on the surface and sub-surface of Cu(111)

    The interaction of atomic hydrogen with the Cu(111) surface was studied by a combined experimental-theoretical approach, using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, temperature programmed desorption, and density functional theory (DFT). Adsorption of atomic hydrogen at 160 K is characterized by an anti-absorption mode at 754 cm−1 and a broadband absorption in the IRRA spectra, related to adsorption of hydrogen on three-fold hollow surface sites and sub-surface sites, and the appearance of a sharp vibrational band at 1151 cm−1 at high coverage, which is also associated with hydrogen adsorption on the surface. Annealing the hydrogen covered surface up to 200 K results in the disappearance of this vibrational band. Thermal desorption is characterized by a single feature at ∼295 K, with the leading edge at ~250 K. The disappearance of the sharp Cu-H vibrational band suggests that with increasing temperature the surface hydrogen migrates to sub-surface sites prior to desorption from the surface. The presence of sub-surface hydrogen after annealing to 200 K is further demonstrated by using CO as a surface probe. Changes in the Cu-H vibration intensity are observed when cooling the adsorbed hydrogen at 180 K to 110 K, implying the migration of hydrogen. DFT calculations show that the most stable position for hydrogen adsorption on Cu(111) is on hollow surface sites, but that hydrogen can be trapped in the second sub-surface layer.Fil: Mudiyanselage, Kumudu.     Virtual process for evaluating the influence of real combined module variations on the overall performance of an aircraft engine

    The effects of real combined variances in components and modules of aero engines, due to production tolerances or deterioration, on the performance of an aircraft engine are analysed in a knowledge-based process. For this purpose, an aero-thermodynamic virtual evaluation process that combines physical and probabilistic models to determine the sensitivities in the local module aerodynamics and the global overall performance is developed. Therefore, an automatic process that digitises, parameterises, reconstructs and analyses the geometry automatically using the example of a real turbofan high-pressure turbine blade is developed. The influence on the local aerodynamics of the reconstructed blade is investigated via a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The results of the high-pressure turbine (HPT) CFD as well as of a Gas-Path-Analysis for further modules, such as the com-pressors and the low-pressure turbine, are transferred into a simulation of the performance of the whole aircraft engine to evaluate the overall performance. All results are used to train, validate and test several deep learning architectures. These metamodels are utilised for a global sensitivity analysis that is able to evaluate the sensitivities and interactions. On the one hand, the results show that the aerodynamics (especially the efficiency ηHPT and capacity _mHPT)are particularly driven by the variation of the stagger angle. On the other hand, ηHPT is significantly related to exhaust gas temperature (Tt5), while specific fuel consumption (SFC) and mass flow _mHPT are related to HPC exit temperature (Tt3). However, it can be seen that the high-pressure compressor has the most significant impact on the overall performance. This novel knowledge-based approach can accurately determine the impact of component variances on overall performance and complement experience-based approaches
