Unitarity of Quantum Theory and Closed Time-Like Curves
Interacting quantum fields on spacetimes containing regions of closed
timelike curves (CTCs) are subject to a non-unitary evolution . Recently, a
prescription has been proposed, which restores unitarity of the evolution by
modifying the inner product on the final Hilbert space. We give a rigorous
description of this proposal and note an operational problem which arises when
one considers the composition of two or more non-unitary evolutions. We propose
an alternative method by which unitarity of the evolution may be regained, by
extending to a unitary evolution on a larger (possibly indefinite) inner
product space. The proposal removes the ambiguity noted by Jacobson in
assigning expectation values to observables localised in regions spacelike
separated from the CTC region. We comment on the physical significance of the
possible indefiniteness of the inner product introduced in our proposal.Comment: 13 pages, LaTeX. Final revised paper to be published in Phys Rev D.

Macroscopic quantum superpositions in highly-excited strongly-interacting many-body systems
We demonstrate a break-down in the macroscopic (classical-like) dynamics of
wave-packets in complex microscopic and mesoscopic collisions. This break-down
manifests itself in coherent superpositions of the rotating clockwise and
anticlockwise wave-packets in the regime of strongly overlapping many-body
resonances of the highly-excited intermediate complex. These superpositions
involve many-body configurations so that their internal interactive
complexity dramatically exceeds all of those previously discussed and
experimentally realized. The interference fringes persist over a time-interval
much longer than the energy relaxation-redistribution time due to the
anomalously slow phase randomization (dephasing). Experimental verification of
the effect is proposed.Comment: Title changed, few changes in the abstract and in the main body of

Do we live in the universe successively dominated by matter and antimatter?
We wonder if a cyclic universe may be dominated alternatively by matter and
antimatter. Such a scenario demands a mechanism for transformation of matter to
antimatter (or antimatter to matter) during the final stage of a big crunch. By
giving an example, we have shown that in principle such a mechanism is
possible. Our mechanism is based on a hypothetical repulsion between matter and
antimatter, existing at least deep inside the horizon of a black hole. When
universe is reduced to a supermassive black hole of a small size, a very strong
field of the conjectured force might create (through a Schwinger type
mechanism) particle-antiparticle pairs from the quantum vacuum. The amount of
antimatter created from the vacuum is equal to the decrease of mass of the
black hole and violently repelled from it. When the size of the black hole is
sufficiently small, the creation of antimatter may become so fast, that matter
of our Universe might be transformed to antimatter in a fraction of second.
Such a fast conversion of matter into antimatter may look as a Big Bang. Our
mechanism prevents a singularity; a new cycle might start with an initial size
more than 30 orders of magnitude greater than the Planck length, suggesting
that there is no need for inflationary scenario in Cosmology. In addition,
there is no need to invoke CP violation for explanation of matter-antimatter
asymmetry. Simply, our present day Universe is dominated by matter, because the
previous universe was dominated by antimatter
Indestructibility of Vopenka's Principle
We show that Vopenka's Principle and Vopenka cardinals are indestructible
under reverse Easton forcing iterations of increasingly directed-closed partial
orders, without the need for any preparatory forcing. As a consequence, we are
able to prove the relative consistency of these large cardinal axioms with a
variety of statements known to be independent of ZFC, such as the generalised
continuum hypothesis, the existence of a definable well-order of the universe,
and the existence of morasses at many cardinals.Comment: 15 pages, submitted to Israel Journal of Mathematic

Nonthermal atmospheric pressure plasma enhances mouse limb bud survival, growth, and elongation.
The enhanced differentiation of mesenchymal cells into chondrocytes or osteoblasts is of paramount importance in tissue engineering and regenerative therapies. A newly emerging body of evidence demonstrates that appendage regeneration is dependent on reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and signaling. Thus, we hypothesized that mesenchymal cell stimulation by nonthermal (NT)-plasma, which produces and induces ROS, would (1) promote skeletal cell differentiation and (2) limb autopod development. Stimulation with a single treatment of NT-plasma enhanced survival, growth, and elongation of mouse limb autopods in an in vitro organ culture system. Noticeable changes included enhanced development of digit length and definition of digit separation. These changes were coordinated with enhanced Wnt signaling in the distal apical epidermal ridge (AER) and presumptive joint regions. Autopod development continued to advance for approximately 144 h in culture, seemingly overcoming the negative culture environment usually observed in this in vitro system. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis confirmed the up-regulation of chondrogenic transcripts. Mechanistically, NT-plasma increased the number of ROS positive cells in the dorsal epithelium, mesenchyme, and the distal tip of each phalange behind the AER, determined using dihydrorhodamine. The importance of ROS production/signaling during development was further demonstrated by the stunting of digital outgrowth when anti-oxidants were applied. Results of this study show NT-plasma initiated and amplified ROS intracellular signaling to enhance development of the autopod. Parallels between development and regeneration suggest that the potential use of NT-plasma could extend to both tissue engineering and clinical applications to enhance fracture healing, trauma repair, and bone fusion
Tensor-scalar gravity and binary-pulsar experiments
Some recently discovered nonperturbative strong-field effects in
tensor-scalar theories of gravitation are interpreted as a scalar analog of
ferromagnetism: "spontaneous scalarization". This phenomenon leads to very
significant deviations from general relativity in conditions involving strong
gravitational fields, notably binary-pulsar experiments. Contrary to
solar-system experiments, these deviations do not necessarily vanish when the
weak-field scalar coupling tends to zero. We compute the scalar "form factors"
measuring these deviations, and notably a parameter entering the pulsar timing
observable gamma through scalar-field-induced variations of the inertia moment
of the pulsar. An exploratory investigation of the confrontation between
tensor-scalar theories and binary-pulsar experiments shows that nonperturbative
scalar field effects are already very tightly constrained by published data on
three binary-pulsar systems. We contrast the probing power of pulsar
experiments with that of solar-system ones by plotting the regions they exclude
in a generic two-dimensional plane of tensor-scalar theories.Comment: 35 pages, REVTeX 3.0, uses epsf.tex to include 9 Postscript figure
Solitons in Seiberg-Witten Theory and D-branes in the Derived Category
We analyze the "geometric engineering" limit of a type II string on a
suitable Calabi-Yau threefold to obtain an N=2 pure SU(2) gauge theory. The
derived category picture together with Pi-stability of B-branes beautifully
reproduces the known spectrum of BPS solitons in this case in a very explicit
way. Much of the analysis is particularly easy since it can be reduced to
questions about the derived category of CP1.Comment: 20 pages, LaTex2
