Origins of the midlatitude Pacific decadal variability

    Get PDF
Analysis of multiple climate simulations shows much of the midlatitude Pacific decadal variability to be composed of two simultaneously occurring elements: One is a stochastically driven, passive ocean response to the atmosphere while the other is oscillatory and represents a coupled mode of the ocean‐atmosphere system. ENSO processes are not required to explain the origins of the decadal variability. The stochastic variability is driven by random variations in wind stress and heat flux associated with internal atmospheric variability but amplified by a factor of 2 by interactions with the ocean. We also found a coupled mode of the ocean‐atmosphere system, characterized by a significant power spectral peak near 1 cycle/20 years in the region of the midlatitude North Pacific and Kuroshio Extension. Ocean dynamics appear to play a critical role in this coupled air/sea mode

The right anterior temporal lobe critically contributes to magnitude knowledge

Cognitive estimation is a mental ability applied to solve numerical problems when precise facts are unknown, unavailable or impractical to calculate. It has been associated with several underlying cognitive components, most often with executive functions and semantic memory. Little is known about the neural correlates of cognitive estimation. To address this issue, the present cross-sectional study applied lesion-symptom mapping in a group of 55 patients with left hemineglect due to right-hemisphere stroke. Previous evidence suggests a high prevalence of cognitive estimation impairment in these patients, as they might show a general bias towards large magnitudes. Compared to 55 age- and gender-matched healthy controls, the patient group demonstrated impaired cognitive estimation. However, the expected large magnitude bias was not found. Lesion-symptom mapping related their general estimation impairment predominantly to brain damage in the right anterior temporal lobe. Also critically involved were the right uncinate fasciculus, the anterior commissure and the right inferior frontal gyrus. The main findings of this study emphasize the role of semantic memory in cognitive estimation, with reference to a growing body of neuroscientific literature postulating a transmodal hub for semantic cognition situated in the bilateral anterior temporal lobe. That such semantic hub function may also apply to numerical knowledge is not undisputed. We here propose a critical contribution of the right anterior temporal lobe to at least one aspect of number processing, i.e. the knowledge about real-world numerical magnitudes

Smits THM, Jaenicke S, Rezzonico F, et al. Complete genome sequence of the fire blight pathogen Erwinia pyrifoliae DSM 12163(T) and comparative genomic insights into plant pathogenicity. BMC Genomics. 2010;11(1): 2.Background: Erwinia pyrifoliae is a newly described necrotrophic pathogen, which causes fire blight on Asian (Nashi) pear and is geographically restricted to Eastern Asia. Relatively little is known about its genetics compared to the closely related main fire blight pathogen E. amylovora. Results: The genome of the type strain of E. pyrifoliae strain DSM 12163(T), was sequenced using both 454 and Solexa pyrosequencing and annotated. The genome contains a circular chromosome of 4.026 Mb and four small plasmids. Based on their respective role in virulence in E. amylovora or related organisms, we identified several putative virulence factors, including type III and type VI secretion systems and their effectors, flagellar genes, sorbitol metabolism, iron uptake determinants, and quorum-sensing components. A deletion in the rpoS gene covering the most conserved region of the protein was identified which may contribute to the difference in virulence/host-range compared to E. amylovora. Comparative genomics with the pome fruit epiphyte Erwinia tasmaniensis Et1/99 showed that both species are overall highly similar, although specific differences were identified, for example the presence of some phage gene-containing regions and a high number of putative genomic islands containing transposases in the E. pyrifoliae DSM 12163T genome. Conclusions: The E. pyrifoliae genome is an important addition to the published genome of E. tasmaniensis and the unfinished genome of E. amylovora providing a foundation for re-sequencing additional strains that may shed light on the evolution of the host-range and virulence/pathogenicity of this important group of plant-associated bacteria

Gateway Pacific Terminal Proposal: Environmental Impact Assessment

    Get PDF
SSA Marine seeks to construct a full-service dry bulk commodity shipping terminal at Cherry Point, Washington. The proposed terminal will be the largest of its kind on the West Coast of the United States. If fully constructed, the terminal will have the capacity to annually export 54 million metric tons of bulk commodities, 48 million metric tons of which are expected to be coal (McKay). The project will involve constructing a railcar unloading station, stockyard, conveyance and shiploading systems, berths for three vessels, service buildings, and a storage and material handling facility, as well as making improvements to rail access at the site. The terminal will likely be constructed in two or more phases, depending on the initial customer demand (SSA Marine)

Transitions in solvate crystals of a tetraaryladamantane

Obtaining high-resolution structures of liquid compounds can be difficult. Encapsulating them in the lattice of a larger organic molecule acting as crystallization chaperone is one option to overcome this difficulty. Tetraaryladamantane ethers can play the role of chaperones, accommodating a range of different guest molecules in their crystals. How well-ordered crystalline arrangements for molecules of different shape are achieved is not clear. Cases in which more than one structure is found may shed light on this phenomenon. Here, we report low-order cubic crystal structures of 1,3,5,7-tetrakis(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)adamantane (TDA) encapsulating ortho-xylene or cyclohexane, together with better ordered structures obtained after warming the crystals to 60 °C. Evidence for cubic crystal systems was also found for limonene, hexachlorobutadiene and eucalyptol, with a transition to a triclinic system for the former two, but no transition up to 70 °C for the latter. These findings indicate that some solvate structures of TDA can readily undergo structural transitions to less solvated, better ordered systems. Crystals obtained by rapid thermal crystallization may be in kinetically trapped states, and the transition to a solvate-free crystal system appears to have a kinetic barrier that depends strongly on the structure of the liquid guest molecules encapsulated in the lattice.Deutsche ForschungsgemeinschaftProjekt DEA

Microspine Gripping Mechanism for Asteroid Capture

    Get PDF
This paper details the development and early testing of a compliant suspension for a microspine gripper device for asteroid capture or micro-gravity percussive drilling. The microspine gripper architecture is reviewed, and a proposed microspine suspension design is presented and discussed. Prototyping methods are discussed, as well as testing methods and results. A path forward is identified from the results of the testing completed thus far. Key findings include: the microspine concept has been established as a valid architecture and the compliant suspension exhibits the desired stiffness characteristics for good gripping behavior. These developments will aid in developing the capability to grasp irregularly shaped boulders in micro-gravity

Recommendations for myeloid-derived suppressor cell nomenclature and characterization standards

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) have emerged as major regulators of immune responses in cancer and other pathological conditions. In recent years, ample evidence supports key contributions of MDSC to tumour progression through both immune-mediated mechanisms and those not directly associated with immune suppression. MDSC are the subject of intensive research with >500 papers published in 2015 alone. However, the phenotypic, morphological and functional heterogeneity of these cells generates confusion in investigation and analysis of their roles in inflammatory responses. The purpose of this communication is to suggest characterization standards in the burgeoning field of MDSC research

Unprecedented change in the position of four radio sources

Astrometric positions of radio-emitting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can be determined with sub-milliarcsec accuracy using very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). The usually small apparent proper motion of distant extragalactic targets allow us to realize the fundamental celestial reference frame with VLBI observations. However, long-term astrometric monitoring may reveal extreme changes in some AGN positions. Using new VLBI observations in 2018-2021, we show here that four extragalactic radio sources (3C48, CTA21, 1144+352, 1328+254) have a dramatic shift in their positions by 20-130 milliarcsec over two decades. For all four sources, the apparent positional shift is caused by their radio structure change.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
