    Crystalline and disordered state of poly(dihexylsilylene) copolymers

    A systematic comparison of random copolymers, derived from poly(dihexylsilylene) (PDHS) by incorporation of monomeric units with shorter unbranched alkyl side chains, has been carried out based on calorimetry, variable temperature UV spectroscopy, and 29Si MAS (magic angle spinning) solid state NMR investigations. Also, hexylmethylsilylene units and branched monomers have been copolymerized. Up to 10% comonomer with shorter linear side chains (i. e., pentyl to propyl) could be incorporated into PDHS without impeding the all-trans order of the crystalline phase. In this case, the UV absorption maximum of the crystalline low-temperature phase was affected only slightly according to the length and fraction of the comonomer side chains. A less ordered crystal structure (λmax = 345-355 nm) was observed when the content of comonomers with shorter side chains was about 20%. Yet, all these materials form conformationally disordered mesophases. A clear disordering transition and corresponding thermochromism was not observed any more when 50% of propyl side chains were incorporated. The order of the crystalline and the mesophase is also strongly perturbed if only a small fraction (4%) of the side chains are branched at C2

    Combined Effects of Knowledge About Others' Opinions and Anticipation of Group Discussion on Confirmatory Information Search

    There is conclusive evidence that information search processes are typically biased in favor of the information seeker’s own opinion (confirmation bias). Less is known about how knowledge about others’ opinions affects this confirmatory information search. In the present study, the authors manipulated feedback about others’ opinions and anticipation of group interaction. As predicted, the effect of knowledge about others’ opinions on confirmatory information search depended on whether participants anticipated interacting with these others. Specifically, minority members anticipating a group discussion exhibited a particularly strong confirmation bias, whereas minority members who did not anticipate a discussion predominantly sought information opposing their opinion. For participants not anticipating group interaction, confidence about the correctness of one’s decision mediated the impact of knowledge about others’ opinions on confirmatory information search. Results are discussed with regard to the debiasing effect of preference heterogeneity on confirmatory information search in groups

    Glucose Increases Risky Behavior and Attitudes in People Low in Self-Control: A pilot study

    People low in self-control have a strong proclivity toward risk-taking. Risk-taking behavior provides an opportunity to obtain some form of reward. Glucose, on the other hand, seems to facilitate reward and goal-directed behavior. In a pilot study executed in the laboratory, we investigated whether consuming a glucose drink would increase risky behavior and attitudes in people low in self-control. Our findings revealed that a dose of glucose compared to placebo increased risk-taking on a behavioral and cognitive level in participants low in self-control but not in participants high in self-control. The findings may shed some light on the psychological underpinnings of glucose: By showing glucose's association with high-risk behavior, they support the assumption of glucose driving a goal-directed motivation

    The different behavioral intentions of collectivists and individualists in response to social exclusion

    We investigated how participants with collectivistic and individualistic orientation cope with social exclusion on a behavioral level. In Studies 1 and 2, we found participants with more individualistic orientation to indicate more antisocial behavioral intentions in response to exclusion than in response to inclusion; however, participants with more collectivistic orientation did not differ in their behavioral intentions between exclusion and inclusion. In the third and fourth study, we replicated our findings across cultures: German and U.S. participants indicated more antisocial and avoiding behavioral intentions under exclusion than under inclusion, whereas Turkish and Indian participants did not differ in their behavioral intentions between exclusion and inclusion. In Studies 3 and 4, only German and U.S. participants were significantly affected by exclusion, showing more negative mood, which correlated with their behavioral intentions. In Study 4, the different behavioral intentions of collectivists and individualists were mediated by a different threat experience. The findings emphasize the role of self-construal and culture, as well as the self-threat inherent in exclusion. </jats:p

    Selective exposure and decision framing: The impact of gain and loss framing on confirmatory information search after decisions

    When people make decisions, they often prefer to receive information that supports rather than conflicts with their decision. To date, this effect has mainly been investigated in the context of decisions about gains, whereas decisions about losses have received less attention. Based on Prospect Theory, we expected information search to be differently affected by whether people previously have decided about gains or losses. Three studies have revealed that selectivity of information search is stronger after gain-framed rather than after loss-framed decision problems. An investigation of the underlying psychological processes revealed that gain decisions are made with increased subjective decision certainty (i.e. they are easier and less effortful to make), which in turn systematically increases confirmatory information search

    The Path or the Goal? Decision vs. Information Focus in Biased Information Seeking after Preliminary Decisions

    Research on the phenomenon of selective exposure to information demonstrates that after preliminary or final decisions, people show a preference for supporting rather than conflicting information (confirmation bias). In this article, we examine conditions that increase or decrease distortions in the search for information. We report on four experiments indicating that the confirmation bias is influenced by whether people focus on their decision or on the presented pieces of information during the information search. Focusing on the decision, for example, because a reward for a correct decision is promised or simply because participants repeatedly think of it, increases the confirmation bias. On the other hand, if participants focus on the available pieces of information because they have to invest money in order to search for information or because they have to evaluate the individual pieces of information, the confirmation bias decreases. Implications for theoretical understanding and interventions for decision-making situations are discussed
