User's guide: Nimbus-7 Earth radiation budget narrow-field-of-view products. Scene radiance tape products, sorting into angular bins products, and maximum likelihood cloud estimation products
The archived Earth radiation budget (ERB) products produced from the Nimbus-7 ERB narrow field-of-view scanner are described. The principal products are broadband outgoing longwave radiation (4.5 to 50 microns), reflected solar radiation (0.2 to 4.8 microns), and the net radiation. Daily and monthly averages are presented on a fixed global equal area (500 sq km), grid for the period May 1979 to May 1980. Two independent algorithms are used to estimate the outgoing fluxes from the observed radiances. The algorithms are described and the results compared. The products are divided into three subsets: the Scene Radiance Tapes (SRT) contain the calibrated radiances; the Sorting into Angular Bins (SAB) tape contains the SAB produced shortwave, longwave, and net radiation products; and the Maximum Likelihood Cloud Estimation (MLCE) tapes contain the MLCE products. The tape formats are described in detail
Digging Digitally: Creating a More Dynamic Archaeological Field Journal Archive
As the daily record of observations, the field journal always has been central to the archaeological process. Yet in recent decades, these important texts have been ignored in the rush to create digital artifact archives. This project, which builds upon software designed to manage the field books at the Ohio State University Excavations at Isthmia, will correct this oversight by enabling a community of scholars to use scans of the hand written texts to link electronically the disparate forms of evidence that make up the archaeological record. Also, this project will determine the best equipment and practices to allow archaeologists to utilize a digital notebook archive in their research. The result will be an inexpensive, multi-platform, and open source system that can be adapted by other scholars to simplify and enhance research in any field of humanities research that depends upon hand written documents as a primary source of evidence
Natural Language Video Processing (Machine Learning-based Identification, Search, Extraction)
The systems and methods described herein provide for a natural-language to generative video process using language-classification and knowledge graph identifiers to find frame segments within a codex of videos that depict the scene described. The mechanics necessary for converting speech to meaningful entities that can be matched to non-text images/videos serve as an underlying basis for generative video
Adolescent Understanding and Acceptance of the HPV Vaccination in an Underserved Population in New York City
Background. HPV vaccination may prevent thousands of cases of cervical cancer. We aimed to evaluate the understanding and acceptance of the HPV vaccine among adolescents. Methods. A questionnaire was distributed to adolescents at health clinics affiliated with a large urban hospital system to determine knowledge pertaining to sexually transmitted diseases and acceptance of the HPV vaccine. Results. 223 adolescents completed the survey. 28% were male, and 70% were female. The mean age for respondents was 16 years old. Adolescents who had received the HPV vaccine were more likely to be female and to have heard of cervical cancer and Pap testing. Of the 143 adolescents who had not yet been vaccinated, only 4% believed that they were at risk of HPV infection and 52% were willing to be vaccinated. Conclusions. Surveyed adolescents demonstrated a marginal willingness to receive the HPV vaccine and a lack of awareness of personal risk for acquiring HPV
The Highly Self-Absorbed Blazar, PKS\,1351018
PKS\,1351018 at a redshift of is one of the most luminous, steady
synchrotron sources with a luminosity \,erg~s. The
synchrotron luminosity does not seem to vary by more than over 35
years. In order to appreciate this remarkable behavior, if it were at ,
it would have a flux density at 15 GHz in a range of \,Jy over 11
yrs. In spite of this steady behavior, two strong -ray flares \,erg~s were detected in 2011 and 2016. There is blazar-like
behavior coexisting with the steady behavior. This study is aimed at
elucidating the dual nature of this source. We find that the radio source is
extremely compact with a bright core and a steep spectrum secondary component,
12\,mas away, that appears to be constant in position and flux density in six
epochs from 1995 to 2018. We estimate that a jet with a time averaged power of
\,erg~s terminates in this lobe that is
advancing at a deprojected distance of \,kpc from the
central engine. This is the rare case of a young (\,yr), very
powerful radio source that is viewed a few degrees from the jet axis. We find
evidence of a high velocity (4000\,km~s), high ionization wind emanating
form a luminous quasar. The young radio jet appears to experience modest
bending as it navigates through the intense quasar environment.Comment: To appear in Ap
