    Arbeiten mit Styrol: Neuropsychologische Störungen bei niedrigen Konzentrationen

    Bereits unterhalb der Grenzwerte treten bei Arbeitern an styrolbelasteten Arbeitsplätzen signifikante Neurologische Schädigungen auf. Dies bestätigt eine epidimiologische Untersuchungsreihe, die im Auftrag der Hans-Böckler-Stiftung durchgeführt wurde. Die Schädigungen im zentralen Nervensystem nehmen proportional mit der Dauer und Intensität der Styrolbelastung zu. Styrol (Vinylbenzol) wird in großen Mengen für die Kunststoffherstellung verwendet, als Lösemittel und zur Herstellung von Gummi, Latex und Fiberglas. Es reizt Augen und Schleimhäute. Dringend sind weiter umfassende Forschungen erforderlich. Von 1995 bis 2001 wurden nur in 5 Fälle eine Berufserkrankung anerkannt, die auf Styrolbelastung zurückgeführt wird. (Berufskrankheit nach BK 1317) Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchungsreihe wurden in einem Expertenworkshop aus Wissenschaft, Berufsgenossenschaft, Arbeitsschutzaufsicht und Gewerkschaften erörtert

    IARC Monographs: 40 Years of Evaluating Carcinogenic Hazards to Humans

    Background: Recently, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Programme for the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans has been criticized for several of its evaluations, and also for the approach used to perform these evaluations. Some critics have claimed that failures of IARC Working Groups to recognize study weaknesses and biases of Working Group members have led to inappropriate classification of a number of agents as carcinogenic to humans. Objectives: The authors of this Commentary are scientists from various disciplines relevant to the identification and hazard evaluation of human carcinogens. We examined criticisms of the IARC classification process to determine the validity of these concerns. Here, we present the results of that examination, review the history of IARC evaluations, and describe how the IARC evaluations are performed. Discussion: We concluded that these recent criticisms are unconvincing. The procedures employed by IARC to assemble Working Groups of scientists from the various disciplines and the techniques followed to review the literature and perform hazard assessment of various agents provide a balanced evaluation and an appropriate indication of the weight of the evidence. Some disagreement by individual scientists to some evaluations is not evidence of process failure. The review process has been modified over time and will undoubtedly be altered in the future to improve the process. Any process can in theory be improved, and we would support continued review and improvement of the IARC processes. This does not mean, however, that the current procedures are flawed. Conclusions: The IARC Monographs have made, and continue to make, major contributions to the scientific underpinning for societal actions to improve the public’s health

    Non-Hodgkin lymphomas and ionizing radiation: case report and review of the literature

    Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) increased continuously since the last century in developed countries. While they are considered as disease in elder ages, a remarkable increasing incidence is also observed in German children and juveniles. The higher rates are interpreted by the changes in classification because diseases such as chronic lymphocytic leukaemia were also identified as NHL. Considerable rates of NHL were found in nuclear workers and liquidators of Chernobyl, i.e. in cases of low-dose chronical exposures. In Germany, we noticed three workers who developed NHL after decontamination of nuclear facilities. The bone marrow is generally considered as target organ for ionizing radiation, but NHL is obviously induced in the whole pool of lymphocytes. Therefore, the dosimetry in cases of typical occupational external and internal exposure must be revised. A high radiation sensitivity for NHL is a possible suspect and likely reason which may partly explain the continuous rise of the diseases in populations underlying the current increases of medical diagnostic exposure. NHL is also induced in children and juveniles with a history of diagnostic X-rays

    Challenges to environmental toxicology and epidemiology: where do we stand and which way do we go?

    Modern toxicology investigates a wide array of both old and new health hazards. Priority setting is needed to select agents for research from the plethora of exposure circumstances. The changing societies and a growing fraction of the aged have to be taken into consideration. A precise exposure assessment is of importance for risk estimation and regulation. Toxicology contributes to the exploration of pathomechanisms to specify the exposure metrics for risk estimation. Combined effects of co-existing agents are not yet sufficiently understood. Animal experiments allow a separate administration of agents which can not be disentangled by epidemiological means, but their value is limited for low exposure levels in many of today’s settings. As an experimental science, toxicology has to keep pace with the rapidly growing knowledge about the language of the genome and the changing paradigms in cancer development. During the pioneer era of assembling a working draft of the human genome, toxicogenomics has been developed. Gene and pathway complexity have to be considered when investigating gene–environment interactions. For a best conduct of studies, modern toxicology needs a close liaison with many other disciplines like epidemiology and bioinformatics
