    A MULTI-THEORETICAL STUDY ON SOCIAL NETWORKING TOURISM

    In this paper, we study factors that may influence users’ continued use intentions of social networking tourism sites. We develop and test a multi-theoretical model based on the theory of planned behavior, self-determination theory, and social capital theory. The study combines qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative method is being used through interviews to explore the factors that motivate continued use intention, followed by the use of quantitative method through survey-based empirical analysis to evaluate the proposed multi-theoretical research model. This research in progress paper reports results from the qualitative study and preliminary findings of the quantitative study. The final reports will be presented at the PACIS conference

    Anonymity, Privacy, and Disclosure (APD) Triad on Social Networking Applications

    While the average time people spend on their mobile apps continues to increase, the life cycle of using new social networking apps (SNA) remains relatively short, mostly due to privacy concern. For SNA users, it is important to know how the perception of anonymity and privacy concern determine the depth of disclosed information. For many SNA developers and practitioners, understanding the actual engagement of users on the platform is critical for measuring success of the app. Previous research has evaluated motivations/preventions of app usage and consequences of continuing usage. Despite efforts to understand the engagement with mobile devices and other users, there is little work in the Information Systems (IS) field to simultaneously investigate the triad of anonymity, privacy concern, and disclosure (APD) on continuous engagement with SNAs. Through the lens of contextual integrity of privacy, this research proposes a research model to investigate APD relationships with perceived and actual engagements with a new SNA. The research model is tested using a survey and actual usage data captured from users’ log files provided by mobile app developers. Results demonstrate how privacy is significantly related with actual engagement while anonymity relationship with actual engagement is fully mediated by perceived engagement

    Despite their late development into the information communication technology (ICT) market, several countries in continental Asia have emerged as technological and industrial leaders in the world. With its information communication technology (ICT) initiatives and policies, South Korea has emerged from its chaotic history as one of Asia\u27s most advanced ICT economies. It could be argued that South Korea has made the same technological progress in 30 years that took the United States to do in over 100. However, rapid growth cannot be achieved without difficulties along the way. The current research presents the ICT growth of South Korea along with factors inhibiting future growth. While South Korea has advanced through government initiatives and diligence among a hard-working society, new initiatives, including the Blue Ocean strategy must be established in order to sustain its competitive advantage. A review of inhibitors limiting continued growth is presented with recommendations for overcoming these limitations

    The three cutting-edge technologies virtual reality, blockchain, and 5G have increasingly attracted public attention. While virtual reality became a popular concept in the 1990s, recent technological advances and decreased costs have created a resurgence in the technology. With significant funding and early adoption, blockchain and 5G have begun to make their mark on the world. Each technology alone may disrupt business and society, but, together, they provide multiple opportunities. In this paper, we summarize a 2018 Association for Information Systems Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS) panel session with IS researchers and industry practitioners that tackled important topics related to these technologies. In particular, the panel made the case for IS research that focuses on topics that emerge when these technologies intersect. Each panelist presented their perspectives based on their experience and knowledge along with current issues and future directions. This topic has significant business implications as practitioners continue to note their advancements and develop strategies to adapt in a rapidly changing environment. The topic also has implications for future research as these technologies continue to become more prevalent

    This article summarizes the panel discussion at Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS) 2012 on the social media environment around the world, particularly the United States, South Korea, and China. The panelists discussed the current status of social networking and social media in the aforementioned countries. The first section begins with United States, with social networking pertaining to the population at large, the use of social networks in the business environment, and observed overuse and addictive behavior of wireless mobile devices (WMD) among users. The second section covers South Korea, with the discussion addressing social networking sites (SNS) and its history; the collectivism of Asian culture and how it affects users’ behavior toward SNS; current trends, which include privacy concerns; and the future direction of SNS in Korea. Finally, in China, social media is further explored in the business models of SNS providers, followed by the customer base comparison between the United States and China

    Big Data and Analytics: Issues, Solutions, and ROI

    Recently, the topic of big data and analytics has received renewed attention from academia and practitioners. There has been an increase in demand for skills in big data and analytics due to the increasing speed, variety, and volume of information. Several research reports have shown that big data and analytics remain top priority for CIOs. A recent study shows how a company accurately predicted a teen girl’s pregnancy via the company’s big data algorithm. However, there are dark sides to big data and analytics. A panel discussion addressed topics concerning how companies ensure that big data projects clearly define measurable goals up front, methods that companies use to ensure maximum return and most effectively, and ways that companies evolve culture, processes, and technology to simultaneously maximize return. Most companies are looking at how they can effectively manage their business more through using their data assets. Companies today target an average return of $3.50 dollars for every dollar spent on big data projects. However, most are only returning a fraction of that today, which leaves room for improvement and the possibility that organizations will push back against new analytic technologies.
