Magnetization of La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4+ delta) (0 < x < 0.5) and observation of novel memory effects
We have studied the magnetization of a series of spin-charge ordered
La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4+delta) single crystals with 0 < x < 0.5. For fields applied
parallel to the ab plane there is a large irreversibility below a temperature
T(F1) ~ 50 K and a smaller irreversibility that persists up to near the charge
ordering temperature. We observed a novel memory effect in the thermo-remnant
magnetization across the entire doping range. We found that these materials
retain a memory of the temperature at which an external field was removed, and
that there is a pronounced increase in the thermo-remnant magnetization when
the system is warmed through a spin reorientation transition.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figure
The Origin of the Boson Peak and the Thermal Conductivity Plateau in Low Temperature Glasses
We argue that the intrinsic glassy degrees of freedom in amorphous solids
giving rise to the thermal conductivity plateau and the ``boson peak'' in the
heat capacity at moderately low temperatures are directly connected to those
motions giving rise to the two-level like excitations seen at still lower
temperatures. These degrees of freedom can be thought of as strongly anharmonic
transitions between the local minima of the glassy energy landscape that are
accompanied by ripplon-like domain wall motions of the glassy mosaic structure
predicted to occur at by the random first order transition theory. The
energy spectrum of the vibrations of the mosaic depends on the glass transition
temperature, the Debye frequency and the molecular length scale. The resulting
spectrum reproduces the experimental low temperature Boson peak. The
``non-universality'' of the thermal conductivity plateau depends on and arises from calculable interactions with the phonons.Comment: 4 pages, submitted to PR
Spin reorientation transition in the incommensurate stripe-ordered phase of La3/2Sr1/2NiO4
The spin ordering of La3/2Sr1/2NiO4 was investigated by magnetization
measurements, and by unpolarized- and polarized-neutron diffraction. Spin
ordering with an incommensurability epsilon ~ 0.445 is observed below T_so ~ 80
K. On cooling, a spin reorientation is observed at 57 +/- 1 K, with the spin
axes rotating from 52 +/- 4 degrees to 78 +/- 3 degrees. This is the first time
a spin reorientation has been observed in a La2-xSrxNiO4+delta compound having

The Shape of Dark Matter Haloes IV. The Structure of Stellar Discs in Edge-on Galaxies
We present optical and near-infrared archival observations of eight edge-on
galaxies. These observations are used to model the stellar content of each
galaxy using the FitSKIRT software package. Using FitSKIRT, we can
self-consistently model a galaxy in each band simultaneously while treating for
dust. This allows us to accurately measure both the scale length and scale
height of the stellar disc, plus the shape parameters of the bulge. By
combining this data with the previously reported integrated magnitudes of each
galaxy, we can infer their true luminosities. We have successfully modelled
seven out of the eight galaxies in our sample. We find that stellar discs can
be modelled correctly, but have not been able to model the stellar bulge
reliably. Our sample consists for the most part of slow rotating galaxies, and
we find that the average dust layer is much thicker than what is reported for

Development of the Magnetic Excitations of Charge-Stripe Ordered La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4) on Doping Towards Checkerboard Charge Order
The magnetic excitation spectrums of charge stripe ordered La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4)
x = 0.45 and x = 0.4 were studied by inelastic neutron scattering. We found the
magnetic excitation spectrum of x = 0.45 from the ordered Ni^2+ S = 1 spins to
match that of checkerboard charge ordered La(1.5)Sr(0.5)NiO(4). The distinctive
asymmetry in the magnetic excitations above 40 meV was observed for both doping
levels, but an additional ferromagnetic mode was observed in x = 0.45 and not
in the x = 0.4. We discuss the origin of crossover in the excitation spectrum
between x = 0.45 and x = 0.4 with respect to discommensurations in the charge

The Temperature Evolution of the Out-of-Plane Correlation Lengths of Charge-Stripe Ordered La(1.725)Sr(0.275)NiO(4)
The temperature dependence of the magnetic order of stripe-ordered
La(1.725)Sr(0.275)NiO(4) is investigated by neutron diffraction. Upon cooling,
the widths if the magnetic Bragg peaks are observed to broaden. The degree of
broadening is found to be very different for l = odd-integer and l =
even-integer magnetic peaks. We argue that the observed behaviour is a result
of competition between magnetic and charge order.Comment: 3 figure
Spin anisotropy of the resonance in superconducting FeSe0.5Te0.5
We have used polarized-neutron inelastic scattering to resolve the spin
fluctuations in superconducting FeSe0.5Te0.5 into components parallel and
perpendicular to the layers. A spin resonance at an energy of 6.5 meV is
observed to develop below T_c in both fluctuation components. The resonance
peak is anisotropic, with the in-plane component slightly larger than the
out-of-plane component. Away from the resonance peak the magnetic fluctuations
are isotropic in the energy range studied. The results are consistent with a
dominant singlet pairing state with s^{\pm} symmetry, with a possible minority
component of different symmetry.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Radiocarbon and blue optically stimulated luminescence chronologies of the Oitavos consolidated dune (Western Portugal)
The dune of Oitavos, the underlying paleosol, and Helix sp. gastropod shells found within the paleosol were dated using a combination of radiocarbon and blue optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). The organic component of the paleosol produced a significantly older age (~20,000 cal BP) than the OSL age measurement (~15,000 yr), while 14C age measurements on the inorganic component and the gastropods produced ages of ~35,000 yr and ~34,000 yr, respectively. Rare-earth
element analyses provide evidence that the gastropods incorporate geological carbonate, making them an unreliable indicator of the age of the paleosol. We propose that the 14C age of the small organic component of the paleosol is also likely to be unreliable due to incorporation of residual material. The OSL age measurement of the upper paleosol (~15,000 yr) is consistent with the age for the base of the dune (~14,500 yr). The younger OSL age for the top of the dune (~12,000 yr) suggests that it was built up by at least 2 sand pulses or that there was a remobilization of material at the top during its evolution, prior to consolidation
Acute affective responses to prescribed and self-selected exercise sessions in adolescent girls: an observational study
Background Positive affective responses can lead to improved adherence to exercise. This study sought to examine the affective responses and exercise intensity of self-selected exercise in adolescent girls. Methods An observational study where twenty seven females (Age M?=?14.6?�?0.8 years) completed three 20-minute exercise sessions (2 self-selected and 1 prescribed intensity) and a graded exercise test. The intensity of the prescribed session was matched to the first self-selected session. Intensity, affective responses and ratings of perceived exertion were recorded throughout the sessions and differences examined. Repeated measures ANOVAs were conducted to examine differences. Results There were no significant differences in intensity between the prescribed and self-selected sessions, but affective responses were significantly more positive (p?<?.01) during the self-selected session. Ratings of perceived exertion were significantly lower (p?<?.01) during the self-selected session than the prescribed session. On average participants worked at 72% V?O2 peak; well within the intensity recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine. Conclusion Even though the intensity did not differ between the self-selected and prescribed sessions, there was a significant impact on affective responses, with more positive affective responses being elicited in the self-selected session. This highlights the importance of autonomy and self-paced exercise for affective responses and may have potential long-term implications for adherence
