Proton beam therapy causing pericarditis - a rare case of radiation induced cardiotoxicity.
Acute pericarditis is caused by the inflammation of the pericardium which can result in an effusion around the heart. Proton beam therapy causing radiation-induced pericarditis is not a well-known cause of pericarditis. We present a case of a patient with Li-Fraumeni Syndrome who developed acute onset pericarditis, presumed to be secondary to proton beam therapy
Towards a Big Crunch Dual
We show there exist smooth asymptotically anti-de Sitter initial data which
evolve to a big crunch singularity in a low energy supergravity limit of string
theory. This opens up the possibility of using the dual conformal field theory
to obtain a fully quantum description of the cosmological singularity. A
preliminary study of this dual theory suggests that the big crunch is an
endpoint of evolution even in the full string theory. We also show that any
theory with scalar solitons must have negative energy solutions. The results
presented here clarify our earlier work on cosmic censorship violation in N=8

Negative Energy in String Theory and Cosmic Censorship Violation
We find asymptotically anti de Sitter solutions in N=8 supergravity which
have negative total energy. This is possible since the boundary conditions
required for the positive energy theorem are stronger than those required for
finite mass (and allowed by string theory). But stability of the anti de Sitter
vacuum is still ensured by the positivity of a modified energy, which includes
an extra surface term. Some of the negative energy solutions describe classical
evolution of nonsingular initial data to naked singularities. Since there is an
open set of such solutions, cosmic censorship is violated generically in
supergravity. Using the dual field theory description, we argue that these

Surprising Connections Between General Relativity and Condensed Matter
This brief review is intended to introduce gravitational physicists to recent
developments in which general relativity is being used to describe certain

Writing CFT correlation functions as AdS scattering amplitudes
We explore the Mellin representation of conformal correlation functions
recently proposed by Mack. Examples in the AdS/CFT context reinforce the
analogy between Mellin amplitudes and scattering amplitudes. We conjecture a
simple formula relating the bulk scattering amplitudes to the asymptotic
behavior of Mellin amplitudes and show that previous results on the flat space
limit of AdS follow from our new formula. We find that the Mellin amplitudes
are particularly useful in the case of conformal gauge theories in the planar
limit. In this case, the four point Mellin amplitudes are meromorphic functions
whose poles and their residues are entirely determined by two and three point
functions of single-trace operators. This makes the Mellin amplitudes the ideal
objects to attempt the conformal bootstrap program in higher dimensions.Comment: 23 pages + appendice
Spacetime in String Theory
We give a brief overview of the nature of spacetime emerging from string
theory. This is radically different from the familiar spacetime of Einstein's
relativity. At a perturbative level, the spacetime metric appears as ``coupling
constants" in a two dimensional quantum field theory. Nonperturbatively (with
certain boundary conditions), spacetime is not fundamental but must be

On Feynman rules for Mellin amplitudes in AdS/CFT
The computation of CFT correlation functions via Witten diagrams in AdS space
can be simplified via the Mellin transform. Recently a set of Feynman rules for
tree-level Mellin space amplitudes has been proposed for scalar theories. In
this note we derive these rules by explicitly evaluating all of the relevant
Witten diagram integrals for the scalar phi^n theory. We also check that the
