Radio Polarization of the Young High-Magnetic-Field Pulsar PSR J1119-6127
We have investigated the radio polarization properties of PSR J1119-6127, a
recently discovered young radio pulsar with a large magnetic field. Using
pulsar-gated radio imaging data taken at a center frequency of 2496 MHz with
the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we have determined a rotation measure
for the pulsar of +842 +/- 23 rad m^-2. These data, combined with archival
polarimetry data taken at a center frequency of 1366 MHz with the Parkes
telescope, were used to determine the polarization characteristics of PSR
J1119-6127 at both frequencies. The pulsar has a fractional linear polarization
of ~75% and ~55% at 1366 and 2496 MHz, respectively, and the profile consists
of a single, wide component. This pulse morphology and high degree of linear
polarization are in agreement with previously noticed trends for young pulsars
(e.g., PSR J1513-5908). A rotating-vector (RV) model fit of the position angle
(PA) of linear polarization over pulse phase using the Parkes data suggests
that the radio emission comes from the leading edge of a conal beam. We discuss
PSR J1119-6127 in the context of a recent theoretical model of pulsar spin-down
which can in principle be tested with polarization and timing data from this
pulsar. Geometric constraints from the RV fit are currently insufficient to
test this model with statistical significance, but additional data may allow

A radio supernova remnant associated with the young pulsar J1119-6127
We report on Australia Telescope Compact Array observations in the direction
of the young high magnetic-field pulsar J1119-6127. In the resulting images we
identify a non-thermal radio shell of diameter 15', which we classify as a
previously uncatalogued young supernova remnant, G292.2-0.5. This supernova
remnant is positionally coincident with PSR J1119-6127, and we conclude that
the two objects are physically associated. No radio emission is detected from
any pulsar wind nebula (PWN) associated with the pulsar; our observed upper
limits are consistent with the expectation that high magnetic-field pulsars
produce radio nebulae which fade rapidly. This system suggests a possible
explanation for the lack of an associated radio pulsar and/or PWN in many

The Southern Galactic Plane Survey: The Test Region
The Southern Galactic Plane Survey (SGPS) is a project to image the HI line
emission and 1.4 GHz continuum in the fourth quadrant of the Milky Way at high
resolution using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Parkes
Radio Telescope. In this paper we describe the survey details and goals,
present lambda 21-cm continuum data, and discuss HI absorption and emission
characteristics of the SGPS Test Region (325.5 deg < l < 333.5 deg; -0.5 deg <
b < +3.5 deg). We explore the effects of massive stars on the interstellar
medium (ISM) through a study of HI shells and the HI environments of HII
regions and supernova remnants. We find an HI shell surrounding the HII region
RCW 94 which indicates that the region is embedded in a molecular cloud. We
give lower limits for the kinematic distances to SNRs G327.4+0.4 and G330.2+1.0
of 4.3 kpc and 4.9 kpc, respectively. We find evidence of interaction with the
surrounding HI for both of these remnants. We also present images of a possible
new SNR G328.6-0.0. Additionally, we have discovered two small HI shells with

A simple, robust flow cytometry-based whole blood assay for investigating sex differential interferon alpha production by plasmacytoid dendritic cells
Central to sex differences observed in outcome from infection and vaccination is the innate immune response, and specifically production of type I interferons by plasmacytoid dendtiric cells (pDCs), the main producers of IFN-α. Evaluation of IFN-α production by pDCs is therefore critical for studies of innate immune function. However, reliable measurement of pDC IFN-α is hampered by reduced cell yields and cytokine production after cryopreservation or after even short delays in stimulating freshly isolated cells. We here describe a simple yet robust method for measuring IFN-α production in pDCs that preserves cell activation and cytokine production through immediate stimulation of whole blood and subsequent maintenance at 37 °C
An HLA-I signature favouring KIR-educated Natural Killer cells mediates immune control of HIV in children and contrasts with the HLA-B-restricted CD8+T-cell-mediated immune control in adults
Natural Killer (NK) cells contribute to HIV control in adults, but HLA-B-mediated T-cell activity has a more substantial impact on disease outcome. However, the HLA-B molecules influencing immune control in adults have less impact on paediatric infection. To investigate the
contribution NK cells make to immune control, we studied >300 children living with HIV followed over two decades in South Africa. In children, HLA-B alleles associated with adult protection or disease-susceptibility did not have significant effects, whereas Bw4 (p = 0.003)
and low HLA-A expression (p = 0.002) alleles were strongly associated with immunological
and viral control. In a comparator adult cohort, Bw4 and HLA-A expression contributions to
HIV disease outcome were dwarfed by those of protective and disease-susceptible HLA-B
molecules. We next investigated the immunophenotype and effector functions of NK cells in
a subset of these children using flow cytometry. Slow progression and better plasma viraemic control were also associated with high frequencies of less terminally differentiated
NKG2A+NKp46+CD56dim NK cells strongly responsive to cytokine stimulation and linked
with the immunogenetic signature identified. Future studies are indicated to determine
whether this signature associated with immune control in early life directly facilitates functional cure in children
Multiwavelength Monitoring of the BL Lacertae Object PKS 2155-304 in May 1994. I. The Ground-Based Campaign
Optical, near-infrared, and radio observations of the BL Lac object
PKS2155-304 were obtained simultaneously with a continuous UV/EUV/X-ray
monitoring campaign in 1994 May. Further optical observations were gathered
throughout most of 1994. The radio, millimeter, and near-infrared data show no
strong correlations with the higher energies. The optical light curves exhibit
flickering of 0.2-0.3 mag on timescales of 1-2 days, superimposed on longer
timescale variations. Rapid variations of ~0.01 mag/min, which, if real, are
the fastest seen to date for any BL Lac object. Small (0.2-0.3 mag) increases
in the V and R bands occur simultaneously with a flare seen at higher energies.
All optical wavebands (UBVRI) track each other well over the period of
observation with no detectable delay. For most of the period the average colors
remain relatively constant, although there is a tendency for the colors (in
particular B-V) to vary more when the source fades. In polarized light, PKS
2155-304 showed strong color dependence and the highest optical polarization (U
= 14.3%) ever observed for this source. The polarization variations trace the

Teaching Writing: a situated dynamic
publication-status: Publishedtypes: ArticleThe paper is theoretically grounded in Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) which holds that human development is founded within participation in social and cultural practices. In particular, the teaching of literacy is shaped not only by the curriculum as designated by policy makers and the institution in which it is located but also by the individualsâ understanding of what literacy and learning involves and how they act to achieve their goals. The paper explores data from a project that investigated the relationship between classroom talk and the teaching of writing in six early years classrooms. Participantsâ own understandings of teaching and learning need to be taken into account by researchers and policy makers. CHAT has been used to explore the dynamic relationship between activity at societal, institutional and individual levels. It is argued that researchers and policy makers need to take account of the wider socio-cultural context in planning and evaluating curriculum development initiatives
Usefulness of molecular biology performed with formaldehyde-fixed paraffin embedded tissue for the diagnosis of combined pulmonary invasive mucormycosis and aspergillosis in an immunocompromised patient
Immunocompromised patients who develop invasive filamentous mycotic infections can be efficiently treated if rapid identification of the causative fungus is obtained. We report a case of fatal necrotic pneumonia caused by combined pulmonary invasive mucormycosis and aspergillosis in a 66 year-old renal transplant recipient. Aspergillus was first identified during the course of the disease by cytological examination and culture (A. fumigatus) of bronchoalveolar fluid. Hyphae of Mucorales (Rhizopus microsporus) were subsequently identified by culture of a tissue specimen taken from the left inferior pulmonary lobe, which was surgically resected two days before the patient died. Histological analysis of the lung parenchyma showed the association of two different filamentous mycoses for which the morphological features were evocative of aspergillosis and mucormycosis. However, the definitive identification of the associative infection was made by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) performed on deparaffinized tissue sections using specific primers for aspergillosis and mucormycosis. This case demonstrates that discrepancies between histological, cytological and mycological analyses can occur in cases of combined mycotic infection. In this regard, it shows that PCR on selected paraffin blocks is a very powerful method for making or confirming the association of different filamentous mycoses and that this method should be made available to pathology laboratories
