Dual ectopy: Unique appearance of ectopic thyroid
A 67-year-old female underwent a computed tomography angiogram (CTA) of the head in the setting of acute, short-term memory loss. Two lobulated hyperattenuating lesions were incidentally discovered at the base of the tongue and the hyoid bone. Upon further investigation in the outpatient setting including further imaging and ultrasound-guided biopsy, the lesions were confirmed to be ectopic thyroid tissue with dual ectopy. Heterotopic tissue, especially when arising at separate sites, can be concerning for a broad differential diagnosis including malignancy, and further evaluation is certainly recommended. When evaluating possible heterotopic tissue, one must always keep in mind the expected embryologic development of the organ in question. Further, in cases where biopsy is less favorable, consideration of the heterotopic tissue's expected physiology is equally important. With these 2 facts in mind, midline hyperattenuating, enhancing lesions in the neck must always be considered to be a possible developmental anomaly of the thyroid, even when there are multiple lesions
An atypical Müllerian duct anomaly: Duplicated cervices and vaginas with a single uterine cavity
Müllerian duct anomalies include a wide variety of developmental abnormalities involving the female reproductive system, many of which are not adequately represented by the current classification system used in the United States. Diagnosis can be made with imaging, but initial evaluation first requires a thorough physical exam. A 19-year-old female received a pelvic MRI for evaluation of a Müllerian duct anomaly following an abnormal pelvic exam. Imaging demonstrated a single uterine cavity which divides into 2 distinct cervices and vaginas. The patient received a hysteroscopic resection of her vaginal septum. This type of anomaly is extremely rare and associated clinical outcomes of potential infertility or complications with vaginal delivery are uncertain. Use of a more comprehensive classification system for Müllerian duct anomalies may assist with identification and research of such rare subtypes
A rare case of primary breast lymphoma presenting as calcifications on screening mammography
Extranodal marginal zone lymphoma (EMZL) is a low-grade subtype of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma that can affect any mucosal tissue, most commonly the GI tract. Primary involvement of the breast, known as primary breast lymphoma (PBL), is a very rare manifestation. We report an unusual case of a 65-year-old woman with primary breast EMZL presenting as calcifications discovered during screening mammography. This represents an exceedingly atypical appearance of primary breast lymphoma that is rarely described in the literature
