Covariant Charges in Chern-Simons AdS_3 Gravity

We try to give hereafter an answer to some open questions about the definition of conserved quantities in Chern-Simons theory, with particular reference to Chern-Simons AdS_3 Gravity. Our attention is focused on the problem of global covariance and gauge invariance of the variation of Noether charges. A theory which satisfies the principle of covariance on each step of its construction is developed, starting from a gauge invariant Chern-Simons Lagrangian and using a recipe developed in gr-qc/0110104 and gr-qc/0107074 to calculate the variation of conserved quantities. The problem to give a mathematical well-defined expression for the infinitesimal generators of symmetries is pointed out and it is shown that the generalized Kosmann lift of spacetime vector fields leads to the expected numerical values for the conserved quantities when the solution corresponds to the BTZ black hole. The fist law of black holes mechanics for the BTZ solution is then proved and the transition between the variation of conserved quantities in Chern-Simons AdS_3 Gravity theory and the variation of conserved quantities in General Relativity is analysed in detail.Comment: 30 pages, no figures. Conservation Laws and Variational Sequences in Gauge-Natural Theories

In the classical Lagrangian approach to conservation laws of gauge-natural field theories a suitable (vector) density is known to generate the so--called {\em conserved Noether currents}. It turns out that along any section of the relevant gauge--natural bundle this density is the divergence of a skew--symmetric (tensor) density, which is called a {\em superpotential} for the conserved currents. We describe gauge--natural superpotentials in the framework of finite order variational sequences according to Krupka. We refer to previous results of ours on {\em variational Lie derivatives} concerning abstract versions of Noether's theorems, which are here interpreted in terms of ``horizontal'' and ``vertical'' conserved currents. The gauge--natural lift of principal automorphisms implies suitable linearity properties of the Lie derivative operator. Thus abstract results due to Kol\'a\v{r}, concerning the integration by parts procedure, can be applied to prove the {\em existence} and {\em globality} of superpotentials in a very general setting.Comment: 16 pages, slightly revised version of a paper appeared in Math. On-shell symmetries

We define on-shell symmetries and characterize them for Lagrangian systems. The terms appearing in the variation of the Poincare'-Cartan form, which vanish because of field equations, are found to be strongly constrained if the space of solutions has to be preserved. The behaviour with respect to solution dragging is also investigated in order to discuss relations with the theory of internal symmetries of a PDE.Comment: 13 page
