The Population Council, a partner of the Pakistan Initiative for Mothers and Newborns project, was responsible for undertaking operations research and a program evaluation to revisit and conduct an in-depth analysis of 1,085 verbal autopsies. The analysis had the following objectives: to identify psycho-socio-cultural issues present in the lives of the women whose verbal autopsies were reviewed, to reassess category of maternal death, and to unpack the indirect maternal deaths. The review yielded important information as to the social determinants of women’s deaths in Pakistan. The major psychological and cultural factors identified with the deaths included poverty, neglect, ignorance, disenfranchisement, and a reliance on spiritual treatment. The review also revealed that hepatic diseases were responsible for the majority of indirect maternal deaths. The information highlights the importance of psychological, social, and cultural factors in influencing women’s lives and well-being, as these factors pose an important barrier to seeking appropriate and timely care

Improving maternal and neonatal health: Measuring the impact of the PAIMAN project in ten districts in Pakistan—A Summary: Comparing baseline and endline survey findings (2005-2010)

    Get PDF
This is a summary of the Pakistan Initiative for Mothers and Newborns (PAIMAN) project’s endline report. The project interventions fell into two broad areas: 1) health systems upgradation and 2) behavior change communication/community mobilization. The thrust of PAIMAN efforts were aimed at reducing the health risk to mothers and newborns by increasing knowledge of danger signs, risks and birth preparedness and, most importantly, improving antenatal and delivery practices. The report concludes that PAIMAN has had a positive impact on overall maternal and neonatal health indicators; success has been recorded in almost all areas, albeit with varying degrees of coverage and impact. The challenge now is to scale up those interventions that had the greatest impact on maternal and neonatal indicators, and to create the sustainable framework that will allow women and newborns across the country to reap the benefit of the PAIMAN project’s successes

Assessment of district health supervisory system

The Pakistan Initiative for Mothers and Newborns (PAIMAN) is a five-year project designed to reduce the country\u27s maternal and neonatal mortality by making sure women have access to skilled birth attendants during childbirth and throughout the postpartum period. PAIMAN developed a community-based approach that provides a continuum of care to mothers and newborns through supportive linkages from home care to hospital-based care. Various assessments of the district health system suggest that it suffers from weaknesses that impair its efficiency, quality, and impact. Inefficient and ineffective supervision is one of the most important factors for the health sector’s poor performance. Effective, supportive supervision following explicit objectives may play a key role in improving quality of services. This supervisory performance assessment was designed to guide the development of the improved supportive supervision system by providing a better understanding of the challenges health supervisors face. The assessment aimed to strengthen the quality, as well as coverage, of health care facilities through improved supervision

The Pakistan Initiative for Mothers and Newborns (PAIMAN) is a five-year project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). PAIMAN is committed to assisting the Government of Pakistan in implementing the full spectrum of interventions necessary to address maternal and neonatal health issues. USAID has provided a grant to implement PAIMAN in ten districts of Pakistan’s four provinces. The goal of the project is to reduce maternal, newborn, and child mortality. The project calls for a multipronged and integrated strategic approach combining individual health care with public health and community-based interventions. To ensure that success is properly attained and appropriate lessons are learned, PAIMAN has developed a monitoring and evaluation plan, which includes the establishment of baseline measures for a set of indicators that will be used to evaluate the success of the project. This baseline report explores the level of knowledge of, as well as the attitudes and behaviors toward, maternal and newborn health in Sukkur district
