On Measuring Condensate Fraction in Superconductors
An analysis of off-diagonal long-range order in superconductors shows that
the spin-spin correlation function is significantly influenced by the order if
the order parameter is anisotropic on a microscopic scale. Thus, magnetic
neutron scattering can provide a direct measurement of the condensate fraction
of a superconductor. It is also argued that recent measurements in high
temperature superconductors come very close to achieving this goal.Comment: 4 pages, 1 eps figure, RevTex. A new possibility in the underdoped

Is the pi-particle responsible for the 41 meV peak in YBa_2Cu_3O_7?
It is argued that there is no low-energy resonance associated with the
pi-operators introduced by Demler and Zhang. This implies that the Hubbard
model does not possess an approximate SO(5) symmetry generated by these
operators. Recent finite-size studies are re-interpreted accordingly.Comment: 3 pages, latex (revtex
Finite-Size Studies on the SO(5) Symmetry of the Hubbard Model
We present numerical evidence for the approximate SO(5) symmetry of the
Hubbard model on a 10 site cluster. Various dynamic correlation functions
involving the operators, the generators of the SO(5) algebra, are studied
using exact diagonalisation, and are found to possess sharp collective peaks.
Our numerical results also lend support on the interpretation of the recent
resonant neutron scattering peaks in the YBCO superconductors in terms of the
Goldstone modes of the spontaneously broken SO(5) symmetry.Comment: 4 pages, Rev-Tex, includes 2 eps figure
The electronic specific heat in the pairing pseudogap regime
When pairing correlations in a quasi two dimensional electron system induce a
pseudogap in the single particle density of states, the specific heat must also
contain a sizeable pair contribution. The theoretically calculated specific
heat for such a system is compared to the experimental results of Loram and his
collaborators for underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x} and La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4 samples.
The size and doping dependence of the extracted pseudogap energy scale for both
materials is comparable to the values obtained from a variety of other
experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 5 eps figure
Effect of Nonmagnetic Impurities on the Magnetic Resonance Peak in YBa2Cu3O7
The magnetic excitation spectrum of a YBa_2 Cu_3 O_7 crystal containing 0.5%
of nonmagnetic (Zn) impurities has been determined by inelastic neutron
scattering. Whereas in the pure system a sharp resonance peak at E ~ 40 meV is
observed exclusively below the superconducting transition temperature T_c, the
magnetic response in the Zn-substituted system is broadened significantly and
vanishes at a temperature much higher than T_c. The energy-integrated spectral
weight observed near q = (pi,pi) increases with Zn substitution, and only about
half of the spectral weight is removed at T_c
Observation of Pure Spin Transport in a Diamond Spin Wire
Spin transport electronics - spintronics - focuses on utilizing electron spin
as a state variable for quantum and classical information processing and
storage. Some insulating materials, such as diamond, offer defect centers whose
associated spins are well-isolated from their environment giving them long
coherence times; however, spin interactions are important for transport,
entanglement, and read-out. Here, we report direct measurement of pure spin
transport - free of any charge motion - within a nanoscale quasi 1D 'spin
wire', and find a spin diffusion length ~ 700 nm. We exploit the statistical
fluctuations of a small number of spins ( < 100 net spins) which are
in thermal equilibrium and have no imposed polarization gradient. The spin
transport proceeds by means of magnetic dipole interactions that induce
flip-flop transitions, a mechanism that can enable highly efficient, even
reversible, pure spin currents. To further study the dynamics within the spin
wire, we implement a magnetic resonance protocol that improves spatial
resolution and provides nanoscale spectroscopic information which confirms the
observed spin transport. This spectroscopic tool opens a potential route for
spatially encoding spin information in long-lived nuclear spin states. Our
measurements probe intrinsic spin dynamics at the nanometre scale, providing
detailed insight needed for practical devices which seek to control spin.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, under consideration at Nature Nanotechnolog
Pi excitation of the t-J model
In this paper, we present analytical and numerical calculations of the pi
resonance in the t-J model. We show in detail how the pi resonance in the
particle-particle channel couples to and appears in the dynamical spin
correlation function in a superconducting state. The contribution of the pi
resonance to the spin excitation spectrum can be estimated from general
model-independent sum rules, and it agrees with our detailed calculations. The
results are in overall agreement with the exact diagonalization studies of the
t-J model. Earlier calculations predicted the correct doping dependence of the
neutron resonance peak in the YBCO superconductor, and in this paper detailed
energy and momentum dependence of the spin correlation function is presented.
The microscopic equations of motion obtained within current formalism agree
with that of the SO(5) nonlinear sigma model, where the pi resonance is
interpreted as a pseudo Goldstone mode of the spontaneous SO(5) symmetry
breaking.Comment: 33 pages, LATEX, 14 eps fig
Collective Spin Fluctuation Mode and Raman Scattering in Superconducting Cuprates
Although the low frequency electronic Raman response in the superconducting
state of the cuprates can be largely understood in terms of a d-wave energy
gap, a long standing problem has been an explanation for the spectra observed
in the polarization orientations. We present calculations which
suggest that the peak position of the observed spectra is due to a
collective spin fluctuation mode.Comment: 4 pages, 5 eps figure
Resonant Spin Excitation in an Overdoped High Temperature Superconductor
An inelastic neutron scattering study of overdoped Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta}
$ (T_c = 83 K) has revealed a resonant spin excitation in the superconducting
state. The mode energy is E_res=38 meV, significantly lower than in optimally
doped Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta} (T_c = 91 K, E_ res =43 meV). This
observation, which indicates a constant ratio E_res /k_B T_c \sim 5.4, helps
resolve a long-standing controversy about the origin of the resonant spin
excitation in high-temperature superconductors.Comment: final version: PRL 86, 1610 (2001
Neutron Scattering and the B_{1g} Phonon in the Cuprates
The momentum dependent lineshape of the out-of-phase oxygen vibration as
measured in recent neutron scattering measurements is investigated. Starting
from a microscopic coupling of the phonon vibration to a local crystal field,
the phonon lineshift and broadening is calculated as a function of transfered
momentum in the superconducting state of YBaCuO. It is shown
that the anisotropy of the density of states, superconducting energy gap, and
the electron-phonon coupling are all crucial in order to explain these
experiments.Comment: new figures and discussio
