Quantum Impurities and the Neutron Resonance Peak in : Ni versus Zn
The influence of magnetic (S=1) and nonmagnetic (S=0) impurities on the spin
dynamics of an optimally doped high temperature superconductor is compared in
two samples with almost identical superconducting transition temperatures:
YBa(CuNi)O (T=80 K) and
YBa(CuZn)O (T=78 K). In the Ni-substituted
system, the magnetic resonance peak (which is observed at E40 meV in
the pure system) shifts to lower energy with a preserved E/T ratio
while the shift is much smaller upon Zn substitution. By contrast Zn, but not
Ni, restores significant spin fluctuations around 40 meV in the normal state.
These observations are discussed in the light of models proposed for the
magnetic resonance peak.Comment: 3 figures, submitted to PR
Antarctic polar stratospheric aerosols: The roles of nitrates, chlorides and sulfates
Nitric and hydrochloric acids have been postulated to condense in the winter polar stratosphere to become an important component of polar stratospheric clouds. One implication is that the removal of NO(y) from the gas phase by this mechanism allows high Cl(x) concentrations to react with O3, because the formation of ClNO3 is inhibited. Contributions of NO3 and Cl to the stratospheric aerosol were determined during the 1987 Airborne Antarctic Ozone Experiment by testing for the presence of nitrates and chlorides in the condensed phase. Aerosol particles were collected on four 500 micron diameter gold wires, each pretreated differently to give results that were specific to certain physical and chemical aerosol properties. One wire was carbon-coated for concentration and size analyses by scanning electron microscopy; X-ray energy dispersive analyses permitted the detection of S and Cl in individual particles. Three more wires were coated with Nitron, barium chloride and silver nitrate, respectively, to detect nitrate, sulfate and chloride in aerosol particles. All three ions, viz., sulfates, nitrates and chlorides were detected in the Antarctic stratospheric aerosol. In terms of number concentrations, the aerosol was dominated by sulfates, followed by chlorides and nitrates. An inverse linear regression can be established between nitrate concentrations and ozone mixing ratio, and between temperature and nitrates
High energy spin excitations in YBa_2 Cu_3 O_{6.5}
Inelastic neutron scattering has been used to obtain a comprehensive
description of the absolute dynamical spin susceptibility
of the underdoped superconducting cuprate YBa_2 Cu_3 O_{6.5} ()
over a wide range of energies and temperatures ( and ). Spin excitations of two different
symmetries (even and odd under exchange of two adjacent CuO_2 layers) are
observed which, surprisingly, are characterized by different temperature
dependences. The excitations show dispersive behavior at high energies.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
Repetitive Segmental Structure of the Transducin β Subunit: Homology with the CDC4 Gene and Identification of Related mRNAs
Retinal transducin, a guanine nucleotide regulatory protein (referred to as a G protein) that activates a cGMP phosphodiesterase in photoreceptor cells, is comprised of three subunits. We have identified and analyzed cDNA clones of the bovine transducin β subunit that may be highly conserved or identical to that in other G proteins. From the cDNA nucleotide sequence of the entire coding region, the primary structure of a 340-amino acid protein was deduced. The encoded β subunit has a Mr of 37,375 and is comprised of repetitive homologous segments arranged in tandem. Furthermore, significant homology in primary structure and segmental sequence exists between the β subunit and the yeast CDC4 gene product. The Mr 37,375 β subunit polypeptide is encoded by a 2.9-kilobase (kb) mRNA. However, there exists in retina other β-related mRNAs that are divergent from the 2.9-kb mRNA on the basis of oligonucleotide and primer-extended probe hybridizations. All mammalian tissues and clonal cell lines that have been examined contain at least two β-related mRNAs, usually 1.8 and 2.9 kb in length. These results suggest that the mRNAs are the processed products of a small number of closely related genes or of a single highly complex β gene
Superconductivity-Induced Anomalies in the Spin Excitation Spectra of Underdoped YBa_2 Cu_3 O_{6+x}
Polarized and unpolarized neutron scattering has been used to determine the
effect of superconductivity on the magnetic excitation spectra of YBa_2 Cu_3
O_{6.5} (T_c = 52K) and YBa_2 Cu_3 O_{6.7} (T_c = 67K). Pronounced enhancements
of the spectral weight centered around 25 meV and 33 meV, respectively, are
observed below T_c in both crystals, compensated predominantly by a loss of
spectral weight at higher energies. The data provide important clues to the
origin of the 40 meV magnetic resonance peak in YBa_2 Cu_3 O_7.Comment: LaTex, 4 pages, 4 ps figures. to appear in Phys. Rev. Let
Leptogenesis from Soft Supersymmetry Breaking (Soft Leptogenesis)
Soft leptogenesis is a scenario in which the cosmic baryon asymmetry is
produced from a lepton asymmetry generated in the decays of heavy sneutrinos
(the partners of the singlet neutrinos of the seesaw) and where the relevant
sources of CP violation are the complex phases of soft supersymmetry-breaking
terms. We explain the motivations for soft leptogenesis, and review its basic
ingredients: the different CP-violating contributions, the crucial role played
by thermal corrections, and the enhancement of the efficiency from lepton
flavour effects. We also discuss the high temperature regime GeV in
which the cosmic baryon asymmetry originates from an initial asymmetry of an
anomalous -charge, and soft leptogenesis reembodies in -genesis.Comment: References updated. Some minor corrections to match the published

Pre-Service Teachers' Internet Usage a Function of Demographic Factors: the Case of a Nigerian College of Education
With the overreaching acceptance of ICT in education and access to Internet occasioned by advancement in technology, this paper investigates pre-service teachers' use of Internet in a college of education. The study was a descriptive survey. Data was collected using a researcher designed instrument tagged “Student Internet Use Scale” (SIUS). The population comprised of all NCE pre-service teachers in Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education Owerri Nigeria. Findings show that mobile phones remains the most widely used mode of internet access with social networking, searching for information on school assignments, chatting forming the major reasons why they surf the net. Social networking is the major purpose for Internet use by female pre-service teachers while school related activities are of priority to males. The difference in purpose of internet use according to gender is however not statistically significant; similarly, there is no statically significant difference between male and female pre-service teachers in the frequency of Internet USAge. The result has far reaching implication for provision and use of Internet facilities to enhance teaching and learning in the College and colleges of education in Nigeria
Zeeman Anisotropy Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Characteristic Radiative Lifetimes, and Novel Site Symmetries in KCl: Sm 2+
By means of Zeeman anisotropy fluorescence (ZAF) and its field dependence (up to 55.8 kG), the authors have investigated the 4.2 K narrow-line fluorescence of KCl:Sm2+ and identified some hitherto unreported Sm2+ sites. The strong no-field line at 7693.5 Å (5D0→7F3) and a very weak no-field line at 8742.8 Å (5D0→7F5) are shown to be of C3v symmetry origin. The 24.5-kG ZAF pattern observed in the 7696-7700-Å (5D0→7F3) region has been identified to originate from a type-II Cs site. The 26.5-kG ZAF patterns of the C3v no-field line at 7693.5 Å and the type-I Cs no-field line at 7694.5 Å overlap in the 7693-7695.3-Å region, and are elucidated through the field dependence of their Zeeman components. Characteristic radiative lifetimes of the 5D0 level in several Sm2+ symmetry types have been determined from dominant transitions to the 7FJ (J\u3c~4) levels. There are two distinct C4v sites: one with a lifetime of 9.5 msec, and the other 11.2 msec. C2v and type-I Cs sites have lifetimes of 10.5 and 10.8 msec, respectively, which are indistinguishable within the experimental error. The role of O2− compensation of Sm2+ in addition to K+ vacancy compensation in KCl is discussed in terms of these findings
Doping induced metal-insulator transition in two-dimensional Hubbard, , and extended Hubbard, , models
We show numerically that the nature of the doping induced metal-insulator
transition in the two-dimensional Hubbard model is radically altered by the
inclusion of a term, , which depends upon a square of a single-particle
nearest-neighbor hopping. This result is reached by computing the localization
length, , in the insulating state. At finite values of we find
results consistent with where is
the critical chemical potential. In contrast, for the Hubbard model. At finite values of , the presented
numerical results imply that doping the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator leads
to a superconductor.Comment: 19 pages (latex) including 7 figures in encapsulated postscript
