“Strange Sights and Sounds”: Indirection and the Rhetoric of the Feminine in Mary E. Wilkins Freeman’s Tales (1852-1930)

The following article analyzes the ways in which nineteenth-century regional writer Mary E. Wilkins Freeman (1852-1930) composes supernatural tales that address in a very indirect fashion disturbing issues such as child abuse, domestic violence and frustrated female desires. In her gothic-like domestic tales, the climax of revelation is indeed continually deferred, as if the female storyteller could simply not tell her secret. Such a rhetoric of indirection becomes all the more intricate as these stories are haunted by spectral but authoritarian male figures whose presence both facilitates and blocks the possibility of revelation. This results in the production of ever-elusive meanings, in which the interaction between the masculine and the feminine plays a key role. In the end, if trauma lies at the heart of Freeman’s texts, it can only be revealed indirectly, in a rhetoric that Freeman links to the feminine.

Port governance and transhipment success : an international case-study comparison of the Freeport Container Port, Bahamas and the Port of Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago

This paper examines the privatization and transhipment success at Freeport Container Port (FCP), Bahamas and Port of Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago (PPS). The thesis links port development and growth to the divergent governance structures of these two ports that share similar geographic advantages. FCP is located at the north-eastern apex of the transhipment triangle and is an example of a wholly private port, which is owned and operated by Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH), a subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa. HPH is in a unique situation where they also act as the local government and own large expanses of land and an airport. This unparalleled level of private self-determination has allowed HPH to develop FCP into a very successful transhipment facility. PPS, on the other hand, has been struggling while its competitors continue to gain despite its strategic position at the south-eastern apex of the "Caribbean Transhipment Triangle." PPS, until recently, was owned and operated by Trinidad and Tobago's public port authority. Its restructuring program had lasted 13 years and did not meet the goals of the government. The traffic growth at PPS has paled in comparison to FCP, and the governance structures have played a key role in these differences. Keywords: Freeport Container Terminal, Port of Port-of-Spain, Port Privatization, Caribbean, Transhipmen

Let EE be an elliptic curve defined over \Q and with complex multiplication by \mO_K, the ring of integers in an imaginary quadratic field KK. It is known that E(\F_p) has a structure E(\F_p)\simeq \Z/d_p\Z \oplus \Z/e_p\Z. with dp∣epd_p|e_p. We give an asymptotic formula for the average order of epe_p, with improved error term, and upper bound estimate for the average of dpd_p.Comment: 7 pages, improvement in Theorem 2, conductor dependenc

Single Sided Deafness – Outcomes of Three Interventions for Profound Unilateral Sensorineural Hearing loss: a randomized clinical trial

Syfte: Att jÀmföra tre tekniska interventioner för svÄr ensidig sensorineural dövhet (SSD). Studiedesign: Prospektiv, randomiserad crossover-studie Patienter: Femton deltagare med ensidig sensorineural dövhet. Interventioner: Tre tekniska interventioner jÀmfördes: Contralateral Routing of Signal (CROS), portabel mikrofon (RM) och benförankrad hörapparat (BCD). UtfallsmÄtten samlades in efter varje utvÀrderingsperiod. Objective: A comparison of three interventions for profound unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Study Design: Prospective, Crossover Randomized Clinical Trial. Patients: Fifteen participants with profound unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Interventions: Three technical interventions were compared: Bone Conduction Device (BCD), Contralateral Routing of Signal (CROS), and Remote Microphone (RM). Each intervention was randomly trialed for a period of three weeks, separated by a one week washout period. Outcome measures: Speech in noise recognition test performed under four conditions (squelch, masking, head shadow, and optimal condition) following each intervention. Standardized questionnaires were used in order to evaluate amplification benefit at baseline and following each intervention. Results: In total RM was the intervention with best significant results in the speech recognition in noise test. Participants did not rate a particular intervention as significantly better than any other on questionnaires of benefit. Following the study, CROS was the intervention preferred by the eight of fifteen participants (53%). The majority of participants (80%) chose to continue with an intervention. Conclusion: All interventions presented better speech recognition in noise and subjective benefits in comparison to baseline. People with SSD are a heterogeneous population when looking at perceived difficulties. Future research should focus on segmenting the population of SSD depending on etiology and age of acquired loss for the poorer ear. This would possibly benefit patient in terms of more individual-based clinical routines
