The imago, nymph, and egg of Macdunnaa brunnea n. sp. are described from the south- eastern U.S. Heptagenia persimpiex is transferred to Macdunnoa and additional diagonostic characters are given for this species and for Macdunnoa nipawinia. The relationship of Macdunnoa to Stenacron and Stenonema is discussed

Chalcosicya maya n. sp, a new Mexican species (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Eumoplinae) and its implications for morphology and biogeography

Chalcosicya maya, new species, (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Eumolpinae) is described and the species key of Blake (1951) is modified to accommodate it. This is the first known mainland species of this previously Antillean genus. Sclerotized rods in the apical segment of the ovipositor of Chalcosicya Blake and related genera are shown to be useful systematic characters within the eumolpine tribe Adoxini. Relationships with other genera suggest that Chalcosicya belongs to a clade derived from ancestors with a western Tethyian distribution.

    Heptageniidae (Ephemeroptera) of Wisconsin

(excerpt) Heptageniidae are one of the most abundant and widespread components of Wisconsin\u27s aquatic insect fauna. In almost any stream with a firm substrate and free of gross pollution, the flattened nymphs can be found hiding in crevasses and under rocks, or clinging to submerged wood. Adults and nymphs are easily distinguished from mayflies of other families, nymphs by their dorsoventrally flattened head and dorsal eyes, and adults by their 5-segmented tarsi and complete wing veination. This paper presents our knowledge to date of Heptageniidae in Wisconsin

University of Technology, Sydney. Faculty of Education. This thesis is a comparative study of youth and community work in three countries. Using field work in Australia and Singapore, and a study of German literature I examine the way youth and community workers in these three countries theorise about their educational practice. The following questions guide the research: ‱ Do youth and community workers practice informal education? ‱ What is successful informal education practice in youth and community work? ‱ Does the educational practice of youth and community workers serve to control its learners? ‱ Can the educational practice of youth and community workers emancipate learners? The starting point for the research is an examination of informal and popular education in Australian youth and community work. I have practised, researched and taught youth and community work in Australia for almost twenty years. Drawing upon this experience and a series of interviews I describe and discuss the contradictions, ambiguities and different consciousnesses that characterise the way many Australian youth and community workers theorise about their practice. I then seek insights for Australian theory and practice in German literature about youth and community work. German scholars have engaged in educational theorising about youth and community work dating back into the nineteenth century. I give an account of the history of this theorising and then analyse more recent debates between advocates of the critical-emancipatory, instrumental and historical-materialist perspectives. In Singapore, youth and community work, if judged solely in terms of participation, is very successful, and I look for explanations for this success. Youth and community workers in Singapore are open about serving the interests of the state. Yet they use language and espouse goals similar to that of their Australian and German counterparts who, for the most part, claim to serve the interests of their communities. The study of this seeming paradox enables me to interrogate the claims of Australian youth and community workers that their practice is shaped by the needs of the people and that they seek to strengthen social wellbeing and cohesion. I conclude my thesis by using the Centre for Popular Education at UTS as a case study and examine how the the lessons learnt in the course of my study of Australian and Singaporean practice and German theory can be used to analyse and explain the Centre's development. I close the thesis by answering the four guiding research questions

A university’s relationship to activist and academic research in adult and popular education

This article in English provides insight into the history, development and implementation of popular education in Australia. Rick Flowers, director of the Centre for Popular Education at the University of Technology in Sydney, describes his personal journey as well as the journey of his research group toward action and participatory research. Applied and participant oriented research and seminars no longer want to distinguish between academic and action research and teaching and resolutely attempt to implement both. This development was driven by the question of what role universities have and can take on in adult and popular education. The article also points out the theoretical background to the development in the content and organization of the research institution. Marxist educational discourses should be combined with Paulo Freire‘s approach to a “Pedagogy of the Oppressed” and theories on community education from the German speaking world. The article finishes with examples of the concrete work done by the Centre for Popular Educatio
