Dr. S. Paul Garner, a life member of the Academy of Accounting Historians, has a hobby that most people only dream about: traveling to accounting-related meetings throughout the world. At the age of 71, Paul is nowhere near ending his travels. This year he plans to visit Brazil, Chile and Peru. In fact, if accounting history is being discussed at a meeting anywhere in the world, Dr. Garner will probably be in attendance

Academy objectives for 1988

I am honored to be able to serve you as President of the Academy for 1988. Unlike in many organizations, the position of president is not just an honorary position, but a working one. However, I have some idea of the nature of the work ahead as I have served the Academy for over a dozen years in a variety of positions including participation on the membership committee, education committee, and board of trustees. Pictures and public relations in corporate annual reports

A corporate annual report has a wider purpose than the mere communication of financial information. The report is a public relations tool to sell the firm to interested readers. The firm\u27s story is told using the traditional methods financial statements, notes, management letter, and auditor\u27s report. But sooner or later, the firm adopts the use of pictures and narrative captions to aid in the telling of its story. This study examined the first use of photos by 14 large corporations. The average year of first usage was 1947. In most cases, companies evolved slowly into the use of pictures, but a few companies jumped into the activity with a vengeance
