A virus causing a disease in mint (the aromatic and culinary plant) has recently become a problem in the Taurus Mountains, a mountain range in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. To detect the virus and investigate its distribution in the region, mint leaf samples were collected from the vicinity of spring areas in the plateaus of Antalya and Konya in 2009. It was found that Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) was detected in 27.08% of symptomatic samples tested by DAS-ELISA. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of CMV on mint plants in this region of Turkey

Profile of down syndrome–associated malignancies: Epidemiology, clinical features and therapeutic aspects

Down syndrome (DS) is a congenital chromosomal abnormality caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21 (+21). DS is frequently complicated by congenital heart or digestive tract diseases at birth. DS patients are prone to infections and have mental retardation, with dementia such as Alzheimer's disease showing in later life. Furthermore, malignancies with specific characteristics are also highly reported in DS patients compared with non-DS patients. Therefore, DS is believed to be a cancer predisposition syndrome due to the chromosomal instability. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and especially acute megakaryoblastic leukemia (AMKL) by French-American-British (FAB) classification are the most frequent hematological malignancies in DS patients, occurring at a rate that is 500 times higher than that in non-DS patients. Interestingly, transient abnormal myelopoiesis (TAM) is observed in approximately 10% of DS neonates with GATA1 mutations, and most TAM patients are asymptomatic and show spontaneous regression; however, about 10%–20% of TAM cases are fatal because of complications such as fetal effusion, liver fibrosis, and other complications.Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is also associated with DS, occurring at a rate that is 20 times higher than that in non-DS patients. Furthermore, the prognosis of DS-ALL patients is poorer than that of non-DS-ALL patients. A recent genetic analysis revealed that more than half of DS-ALL cases have a mutation in the CRLF2–JAK pathway, indicating that JAK inhibitors might have a limited effect for DS-ALL patients.Notably, solid tumors such as neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor, and brain tumor, which are frequently observed in non-DS children, are rarely reported in DS children. The reason remains unknown, but it may be because of the triplication of the Down syndrome critical region 1 (DSCR1) gene on chromosome 21. In adult patients with DS, the expected age-adjusted incidence rates of solid tumors are low compared with age-matched euploid cohorts for most cancers except for testicular cancer. Although the average life expectancy of patients with DS will increase with advances in healthcare, the detailed health problems including cancer rates in older DS patients remain unknown. Therefore, these issues will be needed to be addressed in future studies

Measurement of the F2 structure function in deep inelastic e+^{+}p scattering using 1994 data from the ZEUS detector at HERA

Get PDF
We present measurements of the structure function \Ft\ in e^+p scattering at HERA in the range 3.5\;\Gevsq < \qsd < 5000\;\Gevsq. A new reconstruction method has allowed a significant improvement in the resolution of the kinematic variables and an extension of the kinematic region covered by the experiment. At \qsd < 35 \;\Gevsq the range in x now spans 6.3\cdot 10^{-5} < x < 0.08 providing overlap with measurements from fixed target experiments. At values of Q^2 above 1000 GeV^2 the x range extends to 0.5. Systematic errors below 5\perc\ have been achieved for most of the kinematic urray, W

Cyclodextrins and ternary complexes: technology to improve solubility of poorly soluble drugs

Get PDF
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are cyclic oligosaccharides composed of D-glucopyranoside units linked by glycosidic bonds. Their main property is the ability to modify the physicochemical and biological characteristics of low-soluble drugs through the formation of drug:CD inclusion complexes. Inclusion complexation requires that host molecules fit completely or partially within the CD cavity. This adjustment is directly related to the physicochemical properties of the guest and host molecules, easy accommodation of guest molecules within the CD cavity, stoichiometry, therapeutic dose, and toxicity. However, dosage forms may achieve a high volume, depending on the amount of CD required. Thus, it is necessary to increase solubilization efficiency in order to use smaller amounts of CD. This can be achieved by adding small amounts of water-soluble polymers to the system. This review addresses aspects related to drug complexation with CDs using water-soluble polymers to optimize the amount of CD used in the formulation in order to increase drug solubility and reduce dosage form volume.

Measurement of the reaction gamma*p->phi p in deep, inelastic e(+)p scattering at HERA

The production of phi mesons in the reaction e(+)p --> e(+)phi p (phi --> K+K-), for 7 phi p cross section rises strongly with W. This behaviour is similar to that previously found for the gamma*p --> rho(0)p cross section. This strong dependence cannot be explained by production through soft pomeron exchange, It is, however, consistent with perturbative QCD expectations, where it reflects the rise of the gluon momentum density in the proton at small x. The ratio of sigma(phi)/sigma(rho(0)), which has previously been determined by ZEUS to be 0.065 +/- 0.013 (stat.) in photoproduction at a mean W of 70 GeV, is measured to be 0.18 +/- 0.05 (stat.) +/- 0.03 (syst.) at a mean Q(2) of 12.3 GeV2 and mean W of approximate to 100 GeV and is thus approaching at large Q(2) the value of 2/9 predicted from the quark charges of the vector mesons and a flavour independent production mechanism
