Core content modules at Leeds Metropolitan University
As part of Leeds Metropolitan University’s review of the postgraduate curriculum in 2012–13, Libraries and Learning Innovation (LLI) was asked to lead a project group to create two core content modules for use at Level 7 (Masters level) in Research Practice and Project Management. The rationale for choosing these two areas was the sheer number of modules in these subjects taught across a wide range of disciplines, each of which is currently designed and populated by individual course teams. The group consisted of representatives from the University’s Centre for Teaching and Learning, academic staff, learning technologists and academic librarians, and was chaired by the Associate Director of LLI, Wendy Luker
The resistible effects of Coulomb interaction on nucleus-vapor phase coexistence
We explore the effects of Coulomb interaction upon the nuclear liquid vapor
phase transition. Because large nuclei (A>60) are metastable objects, phases,
phase coexistence, and phase transitions cannot be defined with any generality
and the analogy to liquid vapor is ill-posed for these heavy systems. However,
it is possible to account for the Coulomb interaction in the decay rates and
obtain the coexistence phase diagram for the corresponding uncharged system.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Veterinary Research
The advance of veterinary medicine is in large part dependent upon research. Research is the backbone of any science. This is especially true of veterinary medicine, which is becoming increasingly complex. And as veterinary medicine becomes more complex, so does its research. It is therefore apparent that if veterinary research is to make its full force felt, it must be guided by a planned and orderly program
Gastric Rupture in a Horse
On the morning of June 16, 1942, an old mare which had tentatively been diagnosed as a sleeper suspect was admitted to the Stange Memorial Clinic. The history given was that the mare had been out on pasture in apparently normal condition in the evening. The next morning she was found standing with her head down in a stupor-like condition. Her back and sides were soiled, indicating that she had suffered pain during the night

Compound nuclear decay and the liquid to vapor phase transition: a physical picture
Analyses of multifragmentation in terms of the Fisher droplet model (FDM) and
the associated construction of a nuclear phase diagram bring forth the problem
of the actual existence of the nuclear vapor phase and the meaning of its
associated pressure. We present here a physical picture of fragment production
from excited nuclei that solves this problem and establishes the relationship
between the FDM and the standard compound nucleus decay rate for rare particles
emitted in first-chance decay. The compound thermal emission picture is
formally equivalent to a FDM-like equilibrium description and avoids the
problem of the vapor while also explaining the observation of Boltzmann-like
distribution of emission times. In this picture a simple Fermi gas thermometric
relation is naturally justified and verified in the fragment yields and time
scales. Low energy compound nucleus fragment yields scale according to the FDM
and lead to an estimate of the infinite symmetric nuclear matter critical
temperature between 18 and 27 MeV depending on the choice of the surface energy
coefficient of nuclear matter.Comment: Five page two column pages, four figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Plume mapping and isotopic characterisation of anthropogenic methane sources
Methane stable isotope analysis, coupled with mole fraction measurement, has been used to link isotopic signature to methane emissions from landfill sites, coal mines and gas leaks in the United Kingdom. A mobile Picarro G2301 CRDS (Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy) analyser was installed on a vehicle, together with an anemometer and GPS receiver, to measure atmospheric methane mole fractions and their relative location while driving at speeds up to 80 kph. In targeted areas, when the methane plume was intercepted, air samples were collected in Tedlar bags, for delta C-13-CH4 isotopic analysis by CF-GC-IRMS (Continuous Flow Gas Chromatography-Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry). This method provides high precision isotopic values, determining delta C-13-CH4 to +/- 0.05 per mil. The bulk signature of the methane plume into the atmosphere from the whole source area was obtained by Keeling plot analysis, and a delta C-13 -CH4 signature, with the relative uncertainty, allocated to each methane source investigated. Both landfill and natural gas emissions in SE England have tightly constrained isotopic signatures. The averaged delta C-13-CH4 for landfill sites is -58 +/- 3%o. The delta C-13-CH4 signature for gas leaks is also fairly constant around -36 +/- 2 parts per thousand, a value characteristic of homogenised North Sea supply. In contrast, signatures for coal mines in N. England and Wales fall in a range of -51.2 +/- 0.3 parts per thousand to 30.9 +/- 1.4 parts per thousand, but can be tightly constrained by region. The study demonstrates that CRDS-based mobile methane measurement coupled with off-line high precision isotopic analysis of plume samples is an efficient way of characterising methane sources. It shows that iiotopic measurements allow type identification, and possible location of previously unknown methane sources. In modelling studies this measurement provides an independent constraint to determine the contributions of different sources to the regional methane budget and in the verification of inventory source distribution. New Wrinkles on an Old Model: Correlation Between Liquid Drop Parameters and Curvature Term
The relationship between the volume and surface energy coefficients in the
liquid drop A^{-1/3} expansion of nuclear masses is discussed. The volume and
surface coefficients in the liquid drop expansion share the same physical
origin and their physical connection is used to extend the expansion with a
curvature term. A possible generalization of the Wigner term is also suggested.
This connection between coefficients is used to fit the experimental nuclear
masses. The excellent fit obtained with a smaller number of parameters
validates the assumed physical connection.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
Probability distribution of the order parameter in the directed percolation universality class
The probability distributions of the order parameter for two models in the
directed percolation universality class were evaluated. Monte Carlo simulations
have been performed for the one-dimensional generalized contact process and the
Domany-Kinzel cellular automaton. In both cases, the density of active sites
was chosen as the order parameter. The criticality of those models was obtained
by solely using the corresponding probability distribution function. It has
been shown that the present method, which has been successfully employed in
treating equilibrium systems, is indeed also useful in the study of
nonequilibrium phase transitions.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
