    Electron-electron interactions in decoupled graphene layers

    Multi-layer graphene on the carbon face of silicon carbide is an intriguing electronic system which typically consists of a stack of ten or more layers. Rotational stacking faults in this system dramatically reduce inter-layer coherence. In this article we report on the influence of inter-layer interactions, which remain strong even when coherence is negligible, on the Fermi liquid properties of charged graphene layers. We find that inter-layer interactions increase the magnitudes of correlation energies and decrease quasiparticle velocities, even when remote-layer carrier densities are small, and that they lessen the influence of exchange and correlation on the distribution of carriers across layers.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, submitte

    Highly-ordered graphene for two dimensional electronics

    With expanding interest in graphene-based electronics, it is crucial that high quality graphene films be grown. Sublimation of Si from the 4H-SiC(0001) Si-terminated) surface in ultrahigh vacuum is a demonstrated method to produce epitaxial graphene sheets on a semiconductor. In this paper we show that graphene grown from the SiC(0001ˉ)(000\bar{1}) (C-terminated) surface are of higher quality than those previously grown on SiC(0001). Graphene grown on the C-face can have structural domain sizes more than three times larger than those grown on the Si-face while at the same time reducing SiC substrate disorder from sublimation by an order of magnitude.Comment: Submitted to Appl.     Silicon intercalation into the graphene-SiC interface

    In this work we use LEEM, XPEEM and XPS to study how the excess Si at the graphene-vacuum interface reorders itself at high temperatures. We show that silicon deposited at room temperature onto multilayer graphene films grown on the SiC(000[`1]) rapidly diffuses to the graphene-SiC interface when heated to temperatures above 1020. In a sequence of depositions, we have been able to intercalate ~ 6 ML of Si into the graphene-SiC interface.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, submitted to PR

    The structural properties of the multi-layer graphene/4H-SiC(000-1) system as determined by Surface X-ray Diffraction

    We present a structural analysis of the multi-layer graphene-4HSiC(000-1}) system using Surface X-Ray Reflectivity. We show for the first time that graphene films grown on the C-terminated (000-1}) surface have a graphene-substrate bond length that is very short (0.162nm). The measured distance rules out a weak Van der Waals interaction to the substrate and instead indicates a strong bond between the first graphene layer and the bulk as predicted by ab-initio calculations. The measurements also indicate that multi-layer graphene grows in a near turbostratic mode on this surface. This result may explain the lack of a broken graphene symmetry inferred from conduction measurements on this system [C. Berger et al., Science 312, 1191 (2006)].Comment: 9 pages with 6 figure

    Upper-Room Ultraviolet Light and Negative Air Ionization to Prevent Tuberculosis Transmission

    Background Institutional tuberculosis (TB) transmission is an important public health problem highlighted by the HIV/AIDS pandemic and the emergence of multidrug- and extensively drug-resistant TB. Effective TB infection control measures are urgently needed. We evaluated the efficacy of upper-room ultraviolet (UV) lights and negative air ionization for preventing airborne TB transmission using a guinea pig air-sampling model to measure the TB infectiousness of ward air. Methods and Findings For 535 consecutive days, exhaust air from an HIV-TB ward in Lima, Perú, was passed through three guinea pig air-sampling enclosures each housing approximately 150 guinea pigs, using a 2-d cycle. On UV-off days, ward air passed in parallel through a control animal enclosure and a similar enclosure containing negative ionizers. On UV-on days, UV lights and mixing fans were turned on in the ward, and a third animal enclosure alone received ward air. TB infection in guinea pigs was defined by monthly tuberculin skin tests. All guinea pigs underwent autopsy to test for TB disease, defined by characteristic autopsy changes or by the culture of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from organs. 35% (106/304) of guinea pigs in the control group developed TB infection, and this was reduced to 14% (43/303) by ionizers, and to 9.5% (29/307) by UV lights (both p < 0.0001 compared with the control group). TB disease was confirmed in 8.6% (26/304) of control group animals, and this was reduced to 4.3% (13/303) by ionizers, and to 3.6% (11/307) by UV lights (both p < 0.03 compared with the control group). Time-to-event analysis demonstrated that TB infection was prevented by ionizers (log-rank 27; p < 0.0001) and by UV lights (log-rank 46; p < 0.0001). Time-to-event analysis also demonstrated that TB disease was prevented by ionizers (log-rank 3.7; p = 0.055) and by UV lights (log-rank 5.4; p = 0.02). An alternative analysis using an airborne infection model demonstrated that ionizers prevented 60% of TB infection and 51% of TB disease, and that UV lights prevented 70% of TB infection and 54% of TB disease. In all analysis strategies, UV lights tended to be more protective than ionizers. Conclusions Upper-room UV lights and negative air ionization each prevented most airborne TB transmission detectable by guinea pig air sampling. Provided there is adequate mixing of room air, upper-room UV light is an effective, low-cost intervention for use in TB infection control in high-risk clinical settings

    Confinement resonances in photoionization of endohedral atoms: a myth or reality?

    We demonstrate that the structure of confinement resonances in the photoionization cross section of an endohedral atom is very sensitive to the mean displacement of the atom from the cage center. The resonances are strongly suppressed if 2 exceeds the photoelectron half-wavelength.     The endorsement of dysfunctional attitudes is associated with an impaired retrieval of specific autobiographical memories in response to matching cues

    Two studies investigated a hypothesis of Dalgleish et al. (2003) that overgeneral memory may arise from matching between task cues and dysfunctional attitudes or schemas. In the first study, 111 euthymic patients with at least two previous major depressive episodes completed the Dysfunctional Attitude Scale: Form A (DAS-A) and the Autobiographical Memory Test (AMT). In the second study, 82 patients with a borderline personality disorder completed the Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ) and the same version of the AMT. In both studies, patients retrieved less specific autobiographical memories in response to cue words that matched highly endorsed attitudes or schemas. These results suggest that an impaired retrieval of specific memories may be the result of certain cues activating generic, higher-order mental representations

    Pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk mengimplementasikan aplikasi virtual reality (VR) dalam pengenalan tata surya di SD Laniang BTP Makassar. Latar belakang kegiatan ini adalah tantangan yang dihadapi siswa dalam memahami konsep tata surya melalui metode pembelajaran konvensional yang kurang interaktif. Melalui pengenalan dan pelatihan teknologi VR, siswa diharapkan dapat mempelajari tata surya dengan cara yang lebih menarik dan mendalam. Metode yang digunakan dalam pengabdian ini meliputi pengenalan dasar teknologi VR, pembelajaran interaktif dengan aplikasi VR, diskusi dan refleksi, serta evaluasi dan pengumpulan umpan balik. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam minat, motivasi, dan pemahaman siswa mengenai tata surya. Peningkatan ini ditunjukkan melalui perbandingan skor pre-test dan post-test, serta respon positif dari siswa terhadap penggunaan VR. Faktor-faktor pendorong keberhasilan program ini meliputi dukungan penuh dari pihak sekolah, antusiasme siswa, dan kualitas konten VR yang interaktif. Kendala seperti keterbatasan jumlah perangkat VR berhasil diatasi melalui pengaturan penggunaan yang bergantian. Secara keseluruhan, implementasi aplikasi VR dalam pembelajaran tata surya di SD Laniang BTP Makassar memberikan dampak positif yang signifikan terhadap kualitas pembelajaran, menciptakan pengalaman belajar yang lebih interaktif, menyenangkan, dan mendalam bagi siswa

    Substrate-induced band gap opening in epitaxial graphene

    Graphene has shown great application potentials as the host material for next generation electronic devices. However, despite its intriguing properties, one of the biggest hurdles for graphene to be useful as an electronic material is its lacking of an energy gap in the electronic spectra. This, for example, prevents the use of graphene in making transistors. Although several proposals have been made to open a gap in graphene's electronic spectra, they all require complex engineering of the graphene layer. Here we show that when graphene is epitaxially grown on the SiC substrate, a gap of ~ 0.26 is produced. This gap decreases as the sample thickness increases and eventually approaches zero when the number of layers exceeds four. We propose that the origin of this gap is the breaking of sublattice symmetry owing to the graphene-substrate interaction. We believe our results highlight a promising direction for band gap engineering of graphene.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures; updated reference
