Instability and `Sausage-String' Appearance in Blood Vessels during High Blood Pressure
A new Rayleigh-type instability is proposed to explain the `sausage-string'
pattern of alternating constrictions and dilatations formed in blood vessels
under influence of a vasoconstricting agent. Our theory involves the nonlinear
elasticity characteristics of the vessel wall, and provides predictions for the

Direct estimation of genome mutation rates from pedigrees in free-ranging baleen whales
Current low germline mutation rate (𝜇) estimates in baleen whales have greatly influenced research ranging from assessments of whaling impacts to evolutionary cancer biology. However, the reported rates were subject to methodological errors and uncertainty. We estimated 𝜇 directly from pedigrees in natural populations of four baleen whale species and the results were similar to primates. The implications of revised 𝜇 values include pre-exploitation population sizes at 14% of previous genetic diversity-based estimates and the conclusion that 𝜇 in itself is insufficient to explain low cancer rates in gigantic mammals (i.e., Peto’s Paradox). We demonstrate the feasibility of estimating 𝜇 from whole genome pedigree data in natural populations, which has wide-ranging implications for the many ecological and evolutionary inferences that rely on 𝜇
A registry-based follow-up study, comparing the incidence of cardiovascular disease in native Danes and immigrants born in Turkey, Pakistan and the former Yugoslavia: do social inequalities play a role?
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This study compared the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) between native Danes and immigrants born in Turkey, Pakistan and the former Yugoslavia. Furthermore, we examined whether different indicators of socioeconomic status (SES), such as employment, income and housing conditions influenced potential differences.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In this registry-based follow-up study individuals were identified in a large database that included individuals from two major regions in Denmark, corresponding to about 60% of the Danish population. Incident cases of CVD and AMI included fatal and non-fatal events and were taken from registries. Using Cox regression models, we estimated incidence rates at 5-year follow-up.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Immigrant men and women from Turkey and Pakistan had an increased incidence of CVD, compared with native Danish men. In the case of AMI, a similar pattern was observed; however, differences were more pronounced. Pakistanis and Turks with a shorter duration of residence had a lower incidence, compared with those of a longer residence. Generally, no notable differences were observed between former Yugoslavians and native Danes. In men, differences in CVD and AMI were reduced after adjustment for SES, in particular, among Turks regarding CVD. In women, effects were particularly reduced among Yugoslavians in the case of CVD and in Turks in the case of CVD and AMI after adjustment for SES.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In conclusion, country of birth-related differences in the incidence of CVD and AMI were observed. At least some of the differences that we uncovered were results of a socioeconomic effect. Duration of residence also played a certain role. Future studies should collect and test different indicators of SES in studies of CVD among immigrants.</p
MetaMine – A tool to detect and analyse gene patterns in their environmental context
Background Modern sequencing technologies allow rapid sequencing and bioinformatic analysis of genomes and metagenomes. With every new sequencing project a vast number of new proteins become available with many genes remaining functionally unclassified based on evidences from sequence similarities alone. Extending similarity searches with gene pattern approaches, defined as genes sharing a distinct genomic neighbourhood, have shown to significantly improve the number of functional assignments. Further functional evidences can be gained by correlating these gene patterns with prevailing environmental parameters. MetaMine was developed to approach the large pool of unclassified proteins by searching for recurrent gene patterns across habitats based on key genes. Results MetaMine is an interactive data mining tool which enables the detection of gene patterns in an environmental context. The gene pattern search starts with a user defined environmentally interesting key gene. With this gene a BLAST search is carried out against the Microbial Ecological Genomics DataBase (MEGDB) containing marine genomic and metagenomic sequences. This is followed by the determination of all neighbouring genes within a given distance and a search for functionally equivalent genes. In the final step a set of common genes present in a defined number of distinct genomes is determined. The gene patterns found are associated with their individual pattern instances describing gene order and directions. They are presented together with information about the sample and the habitat. MetaMine is implemented in Java and provided as a client/server application with a user-friendly graphical user interface. The system was evaluated with environmentally relevant genes related to the methane-cycle and carbon monoxide oxidation. Conclusion MetaMine offers a targeted, semi-automatic search for gene patterns based on expert input. The graphical user interface of MetaMine provides a user-friendly overview of the computed gene patterns for further inspection in an ecological context. Prevailing biological processes associated with a key gene can be used to infer new annotations and shape hypotheses to guide further analyses. The use-cases demonstrate that meaningful gene patterns can be quickly detected using MetaMine
The Ellipticities of Cluster Early-type Galaxies from z~1 to z~0: No Evolution in the Overall Distribution of Bulge-to-Disk Ratios
We have compiled a sample of early-type cluster galaxies from 0 < z < 1.3 and
measured the evolution of their ellipticity distributions. Our sample contains
487 galaxies in 17 z>0.3 clusters with high quality space-based imaging and a
comparable sample of 210 galaxies in 10 clusters at z<0.05. We select
early-type galaxies (elliptical and S0 galaxies) that fall within the cluster
R_{200}, and which lie on the red-sequence in the magnitude range -19.3 > M_B >
-21, after correcting for luminosity evolution. Our ellipticity measurements
are made in a consistent manner over our whole sample. We perform extensive
simulations to quantify the systematic and statistical errors, and find that it
is crucial to use PSF-corrected model fits. We find that neither the median
ellipticity, nor the shape of the ellipticity distribution of cluster
early-type galaxies evolves with redshift from z ~ 0 to z > 1. These results
are strongly suggestive of an unchanging overall bulge-to-disk ratio
distribution for cluster early-type galaxies over the last ~8Gyr. This result
contrasts with that from visual classifications which show that the fraction of
morphologically-selected disk-dominated early-type galaxies, or S0s, is
significantly lower at z>0.4 than at z~0. Taking the ellipticity measurements
and assuming, as in all previous studies, that the intrinsic ellipticity
distribution of both elliptical and S0 galaxies remains constant, then we
conclude from the lack of evolution in the observed early-type ellipticity
distribution that the relative fractions of ellipticals and S0s do not evolve
from z~1 to z=0 for a red-sequence selected samples of galaxies in the cores of

Plant diversity greatly enhances weed suppression in intensively managed grasslands
Weed suppression was investigated in a field experiment across 31 international sites. The study included 15 plant communities at each site, based on two grasses and two legumes, each sown in monoculture and 11 four-species mixtures varying in the relative proportions of the four species. At each site, one grass and one legume species was selected as fast establishing and the other two species were selected for persistence. Average weed biomass in mixtures over the whole experiment was 52% less (95% confidence interval, 30 to 75%) than in the most suppressive monoculture (transgressive suppression). Transgressive suppression of weed biomass persisted over each year for each mixture. Weed biomass was consistently low and relatively similar across all mixtures and years. Average sown species biomass was greater in all mixtures than in any monoculture. The suppressive effect of sown forage species on weeds in mixtures was achieved without any herbicide use. At each site, weed biomass for almost every mixture was lower than the average across the four monocultures. The average proportion of weed biomass in mixtures was less than in the most suppressive monoculture in two thirds of sites. Vertebrate Vitellogenin Gene Duplication in Relation to the “3R Hypothesis”: Correlation to the Pelagic Egg and the Oceanic Radiation of Teleosts
The spiny ray-finned teleost fishes (Acanthomorpha) are the most successful group of vertebrates in terms of species diversity. Their meteoric radiation and speciation in the oceans during the late Cretaceous and Eocene epoch is unprecedented in vertebrate history, occurring in one third of the time for similar diversity to appear in the birds and mammals. The success of marine teleosts is even more remarkable considering their long freshwater ancestry, since it implies solving major physiological challenges when freely broadcasting their eggs in the hyper-osmotic conditions of seawater. Most extant marine teleosts spawn highly hydrated pelagic eggs, due to differential proteolysis of vitellogenin (Vtg)-derived yolk proteins. The maturational degradation of Vtg involves depolymerization of mainly the lipovitellin heavy chain (LvH) of one form of Vtg to generate a large pool of free amino acids (FAA 150–200 mM). This organic osmolyte pool drives hydration of the ooctye while still protected within the maternal ovary. In the present contribution, we have used Bayesian analysis to examine the evolution of vertebrate Vtg genes in relation to the “3R hypothesis” of whole genome duplication (WGD) and the functional end points of LvH degradation during oocyte maturation. We find that teleost Vtgs have experienced a post-R3 lineage-specific gene duplication to form paralogous clusters that correlate to the pelagic and benthic character of the eggs. Neo-functionalization allowed one paralogue to be proteolyzed to FAA driving hydration of the maturing oocytes, which pre-adapts them to the marine environment and causes them to float. The timing of these events matches the appearance of the Acanthomorpha in the fossil record. We discuss the significance of these adaptations in relation to ancestral physiological features, and propose that the neo-functionalization of duplicated Vtg genes was a key event in the evolution and success of the teleosts in the oceanic environment
