Branch retinal artery occlusion following radiation therapy to the head and neck: a case report
Abstract
Background
Previous studies have established that radiation to the head and neck leads to atherosclerosis and stenosis of the carotid artery and subsequent increased stroke risk, but the ophthalmic sequella following cervical irradiation is less well-defined.
Case presentation
We present a single case of branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) in a 55Â year-old Caucasian male seen at the University of Michigan in 2008 following unilateral head and neck radiation.
Conclusion
This case demonstrates that patients receiving radiation to the head and neck may be at increased risk for developing a BRAO secondary to atherosclerotic changes of vessels adjacent to the radiation target. Given this risk, it may be reasonable to obtain carotid artery imaging in patients with a history of cervical radiation who present with sudden or transient visual field defects, even in the absence of other conventional risk factors for atherosclerosis.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/112614/1/12886_2013_Article_356.pd
Keck-I MOSFIRE Spectroscopy of Compact Star-Forming Galaxies at \u3cem\u3ez\u3c/em\u3e ≳ 2: High Velocity Dispersions in Progenitors of Compact Quiescent Galaxies
We present Keck-I MOSFIRE near-infrared spectroscopy for a sample of 13 compact star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at redshift 2 ≤ z ≤ 2.5 with star formation rates of SFR ~ 100 M ☉ yr–1 and masses of log(M/M ☉) ~10.8. . . .

Dysregulated apoptosis and NFκB expression in COPD subjects

Abstract

Background

The abnormal regulation of neutrophil apoptosis may contribute to the ineffective resolution of inflammation in chronic lung diseases. Multiple signalling pathways are implicated in regulating granulocyte apoptosis, in particular, NFκB (nuclear factor-kappa B) signalling which delays constitutive neutrophil apoptosis. Although some studies have suggested a dysregulation in the apoptosis of airway cells in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), no studies to date have directly investigated if NFκB is associated with apoptosis of airway neutrophils from COPD patients. The objectives of this study were to examine spontaneous neutrophil apoptosis in stable COPD subjects (n = 13), healthy smoking controls (n = 9) and non-smoking controls (n = 9) and to investigate whether the neutrophil apoptotic process in inflammatory conditions is associated with NFκB activation.

Methods

Analysis of apoptosis in induced sputum was carried out by 3 methods; light microscopy, Annexin V/Propidium iodide and the terminal transferase-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling (TUNEL) method. Activation of NFκB was assessed using a flow cytometric method and the phosphorylation state of IκBα was carried out using the Bio-Rad Bio-Plex phosphoprotein IκBα assay.

Results

Flow cytometric analysis showed a significant reduction in the percentage of sputum neutrophils undergoing spontaneous apoptosis in healthy smokers and subjects with COPD compared to non-smokers (p < 0.001). Similar findings were demonstrated using the Tunel assay and in the morphological identification of apoptotic neutrophils. A significant increase was observed in the expression of both the p50 (p = 0.006) and p65 (p = 0.006) subunits of NFκB in neutrophils from COPD subjects compared to non-smokers.

Conclusion

These results demonstrate that apoptosis is reduced in the sputum of COPD subjects and in healthy control smokers and may be regulated by an associated activation of NFκB.</p
Randomized trial of achieving healthy lifestyles in psychiatric rehabilitation: the ACHIEVE trial

Abstract

Background

Overweight and obesity are highly prevalent among persons with serious mental illness. These conditions likely contribute to premature cardiovascular disease and a 20 to 30 percent shortened life expectancy in this vulnerable population. Persons with serious mental illness need effective, appropriately tailored behavioral interventions to achieve and maintain weight loss. Psychiatric rehabilitation day programs provide logical intervention settings because mental health consumers often attend regularly and exercise can take place on-site. This paper describes the Randomized Trial of Achieving Healthy Lifestyles in Psychiatric Rehabilitation (ACHIEVE). The goal of the study is to determine the effectiveness of a behavioral weight loss intervention among persons with serious mental illness that attend psychiatric rehabilitation programs. Participants randomized to the intervention arm of the study are hypothesized to have greater weight loss than the control group.

Methods/Design

A targeted 320 men and women with serious mental illness and overweight or obesity (body mass index ≥ 25.0 kg/m2) will be recruited from 10 psychiatric rehabilitation programs across Maryland. The core design is a randomized, two-arm, parallel, multi-site clinical trial to compare the effectiveness of an 18-month behavioral weight loss intervention to usual care. Active intervention participants receive weight management sessions and physical activity classes on-site led by study interventionists. The intervention incorporates cognitive adaptations for persons with serious mental illness attending psychiatric rehabilitation programs. The initial intensive intervention period is six months, followed by a twelve-month maintenance period in which trained rehabilitation program staff assume responsibility for delivering parts of the intervention. Primary outcomes are weight loss at six and 18 months.

Discussion

Evidence-based approaches to the high burden of obesity and cardiovascular disease risk in person with serious mental illness are urgently needed. The ACHIEVE Trial is tailored to persons with serious mental illness in community settings. This multi-site randomized clinical trial will provide a rigorous evaluation of a practical behavioral intervention designed to accomplish and sustain weight loss in persons with serious mental illness.

Trial Registration

Clinical Trials.gov NCT00902694</p
Demographics of Star-forming Galaxies since z ∼ 2.5. I. The UVJ Diagram in CANDELS
This is the first in a series of papers examining the demographics of
star-forming galaxies at in CANDELS. We study 9,100 galaxies from
GOODS-S and UDS having published values of redshifts, masses, star-formation
rates (SFRs), and dust attenuation () derived from UV-optical SED fitting.
In agreement with previous works, we find that the colors of a galaxy are
closely correlated with its specific star-formation rate (SSFR) and . We
define rotated coordinate axes, termed and
, that are parallel and perpendicular to the star-forming
sequence and derive a quantitative calibration that predicts SSFR from
with an accuracy of ~0.2 dex. SFRs from UV-optical fitting and
from UV+IR values based on Spitzer/MIPS 24 agree well overall,
but systematic differences of order 0.2 dex exist at high and low redshifts. A
novel plotting scheme conveys the evolution of multiple galaxy properties
simultaneously, and dust growth, as well as star-formation decline and
quenching, exhibit "mass-accelerated evolution" ("downsizing"). A population of
transition galaxies below the star-forming main sequence is identified. These
objects are located between star-forming and quiescent galaxies in space
and have lower and smaller radii than galaxies on the main sequence.
Their properties are consistent with their being in transit between the two
regions. The relative numbers of quenched, transition, and star-forming
galaxies are given as a function of mass and redshift.Comment: 36 pages, 26 figures, ApJ accepte
A seguir, alguns tópicos importantes mereceram tratamento à parte: a fome, o alimento e o domÃnio religioso, as descobertas européias e a difusão mundial de alimentos, gosto e gastronomia. O artigo se encerra com um rápido balanço crÃtico da historiografia brasileira sobre o tema
