Inhibitor regulation of tissue kallikrein activity in the synovial fluid of patients with rheumatoid athritis
Tissue kallikrein (TK) and 1-antitrypsin (AT)/TK complexes can be detected in SF from patients with RA if components of the fluids which interfere with the detection of TK are removed. 2-Macroglobulin (2-M) in SF was demonstrated to contain trapped proteases which were still active in amidase assays. Removal of 2-M from RA SF reduced their amidase activity. However, at least some of the remaining activity was due to TK because it was soya bean trypsin inhibitor resistant and trasylol sensitive and was partly removed by affinity chromatography on anti-TK sepharose. Removal of RF from the fluids reduced the values obtained for TK levels by ELISA. Addition of SF to human urinary kallikrein (HUK) considerably reduced the levels of TK detected suggesting the presence of a TK ELISA inhibitor in the fluids. Removal of components of >300 kDa from SF markedly reduced the TK ELISA inhibitory activity and increased the values for both the TK and l-AT/TK levels in fluids as measured by ELISA. It is considered this novel inhibitor does not bind to the active site of TK but rather binds to the site reactive with anti-TK antibodies
Effect of impurity substitution on band structure and mass renormalization of the correlated FeTeSe superconductor
Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we studied the
effect of the impurity potential on the electronic structure of
FeTeSe superconductor by substituting 10\% of Ni for Fe which
leads to an electron doping of the system. We could resolve three hole pockets
near the zone center and an electron pocket near the zone corner in the case of
FeTeSe, whereas only two hole pockets near the zone center and
an electron pocket near the zone corner are resolved in the case of
FeNiTeSe, suggesting that the hole pocket
having predominantly the orbital character is very sensitive to the
impurity scattering. Upon electron doping, the size of the hole pockets
decrease and the size of the electron pockets increase as compared to the host
compound. However, the observed changes in the size of the electron and hole
pockets are not consistent with the rigid-band model. Moreover, the effective
mass of the hole pockets is reduced near the zone center and of the electron
pockets is increased near the zone corner in the doped
FeNiTeSe as compared to FeTeSe.
We refer these observations to the changes of the spectral function due to the
effect of the impurity potential of the dopants.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
Cost-effectiveness of trastuzumab in the adjuvant treatment of early breast cancer: a model-based analysis of the HERA and FinHer trial
BACKGROUND: Routine adjuvant administration of trastuzumab (T) has been implemented in most centers, but its economic impact has not yet been well examined. METHODS: A Markov model was constructed based on clinical data of the Herceptin Adjuvant (HERA) and the Finland Herceptin (FinHer) trials. Costs from the perspective of a Swiss health care provider were calculated based on resource use. RESULTS: On the basis of HERA data, our model yielded an overall survival rate of 71.8% for the T group versus 62.8% for the control group [risk ratio (RR) = 0.87) after 10 years and 62.9% versus 52.7% (RR = 0.84) after 15 years. Cost-effectiveness resulted in 40505 Euros (EUR) per life years gained (LYG) after 10 years and 19673 EUR per LYG after 15 years. For the FinHer regimen, overall survival after 10 and 15 years resulted in 81.8% versus 66.1% (RR = 0.81) and 73.6% versus 57.0% (RR = 0.77). Costs of 8497 EUR per patient could be saved after 10 years and 9256 EUR after 15 years compared with the control group. CONCLUSION: In a long-term perspective, adjuvant T based on the HERA regimen can be considered cost-effective. Density-functional study of Cu atoms, monolayers, and coadsorbates on polar ZnO surfaces
The structure and electronic properties of single Cu atoms, copper monolayers
and thin copper films on the polar oxygen and zinc terminated surfaces of ZnO
are studied using periodic density-functional calculations. We find that the
binding energy of Cu atoms sensitively depends on how charge neutrality of the
polar surfaces is achieved. Bonding is very strong if the surfaces are
stabilized by an electronic mechanism which leads to partially filled surface
bands. As soon as the surface bands are filled (either by partial Cu coverage,
by coadsorbates, or by the formation of defects), the binding energy decreases
significantly. In this case, values very similar to those found for nonpolar
surfaces and for copper on finite ZnO clusters are obtained. Possible
implications of these observations concerning the growth mode of copper on

Reconstructing initial data using observers: error analysis of the semi-discrete and fully discrete approximations
A new iterative algorithm for solving initial data inverse problems from partial observations has been recently proposed in Ramdani et al. (Automatica 46(10), 1616-1625, 2010 ). Based on the concept of observers (also called Luenberger observers), this algorithm covers a large class of abstract evolution PDE's. In this paper, we are concerned with the convergence analysis of this algorithm. More precisely, we provide a complete numerical analysis for semi-discrete (in space) and fully discrete approximations derived using finite elements in space and an implicit Euler method in time. The analysis is carried out for abstract Schrödinger and wave conservative systems with bounded observation (locally distributed)
Green function Retrieval and Time-reversal in a Disordered World
We apply the theory of multiple wave scattering to two contemporary, related
topics: imaging with diffuse correlations and stability of time-reversal of
diffuse waves, using equipartition, coherent backscattering and frequency
