NURSES’ TRUST IN MANAGERS: THE ROLE OF AUTHENTIC LEADERSHIP AND WORKPLACE EMPOWERMENT

    Get PDF
Nurses’ trust in their manager and structural empowerment are key elements of healthy nurse work environments that can influence important work outcomes such as nurse turnover. The purpose o f this secondary analysis was to examine the relationship among authentic leadership, structural empowerment, and nurses’ trust in their manager in a sample of Ontario acute care nurses, and determine if structural empowerment mediates the relationship between authentic leadership and trust. Authentic leadership and structural empowerment each had individual direct positive effects on nurses’ trust in their manager, but structural empowerment was not found to mediate the relationship between authentic leadership and nurses’ trust. Authentic leadership accounted for 48% of the variance in nurses’ trust in their manager. Results indicate the importance of nurse managers’ authentic leadership and structural empowerment as a way to increase nurses’ trust in their manager and contribute to a healthy work environment

Enhancing The Learning Environment Of Nursing Students Through Interprofessional Collaboration

    Get PDF
The AACN position statement (1999) supports interprofessional collaboration. The development of innovative collaborative teaching methods within education may enhance the learning environment of students. Educational institutions utilize student evaluations as a method of listening to the voices of students, but research related to their use is limited. The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of interprofessional collaboration on nursing students’ perceptions of the online learning environment. An innovative collaborative teaching methodology was developed using a variety of disciplines, including physicians, pharmacists, chiropractic physicians, and nurses. Quantitative data analyses indicated a significant increase in student satisfaction with the online course as well as the online environment p < 0.05 following the establishment of the collaborative teaching methodology. Qualitative analysis illustrated enhanced satisfaction among students following the institution of interprofessional collaboration. Findings that view the learning environment through the lens of students’ eyes have many implications, including increased student and faculty satisfaction with the teaching/learning experience and enhanced collaboration among healthcare professionals. In addition, results may impact the curriculum by identifying a multidisciplinary approach to nursing education as an important resource. If we believe that students have a right to be active participants in their educational experiences, then we must give voice to their values, choices, concerns, and requests. A collaborative teaching methodology is one way to ensure that students’ voices are heard and acted upon, and it was found to be an innovative solution in meeting enrollment demands and healthcare needs. Collaborative relationships within nursing practice and nursing education are essential in the preparation of future nurses.

Italy, the European Union, and Mediterranean migrants: opportunity from crisis?

Since 2013, civil and interstate wars have roiled North Africa and the Middle East. These conflicts, along with poverty in both regions, have led to the largest migration to Europe since the end of World War II. This thesis considers the effects of mass migration on Italy and the European Union (EU). It examines Italian and EU military responses to the migrant crisis, as well as possible means to dedicate greater resources to aid in security endeavors. This thesis also explores the impacts that the migrant crisis has had on the Italian economy and politics. It analyzes the Italian immigration system, along with how it interfaces with the EU's immigration system, and explores ways in which both can promote more effective migrant and refugee economic integration. This thesis concludes that current EU and Italian efforts to address the Mediterranean migrant crisis are falling short of effectively managing the migrant and refugee influx. This thesis recommends NATO involvement concerning the security and flow management aspects of this challenge, and also argues that better economic integration of the migrants and refugees may hold the key to economic renewal in various EU member states, notably Italy.http://archive.org/details/italyeuropeunion1094550539Outstanding ThesisLieutenant, United States NavyApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited

Cross-language frame semantics transfer in bilingual corpora

Abstract. Recent work on the transfer of semantic information across languages has been recently applied to the development of resources annotated with Frame information for different non-English European languages. These works are based on the assumption that parallel corpora annotated for English can be used to transfer the semantic information to the other target languages. In this paper, a robust method based on a statistical machine translation step augmented with simple rule-based post-processing is presented. It alleviates problems related to preprocessing errors and the complex optimization required by syntax-dependent models of the cross-lingual mapping. Different alignment strategies are here in-vestigated against the Europarl corpus. Results suggest that the quality of the de-rived annotations is surprisingly good and well suited for training semantic role labeling systems.
