The constructions and operating modes of defense hydraulicstructures and equipment of water moats of castles, which are uniquememorials of fortification architecture, and belonging to objects thatneed scientific research to develop strategies for their reconstruction, preservation and protection, are considered. The hydrauliccharacteristics of defense ditches equipped with shields (gates) and tread barriers are investigated. Defensive structures of medievalfortresses and castles included in the composition of the ditches filledwith water. To determine the time of filling the defensive raft, calculations were made for two types of gates: a shield and a shadhoroverlap. Comparing the results of the calculations, we see that thetime of filling the defense raft in the case of leakage from under theshield (when applied as a barrier shield construction) is almost twicelower than in the case of water transfusion through shandor roofs. Multivariate pattern recognition approaches have recently facilitated the search for reliable neuroimaging-based biomarkers in psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. By taking into account the multivariate nature of brain functional and structural changes as well as their distributed localization across the whole brain, they overcome drawbacks of traditional univariate approaches. To evaluate the overall reliability of neuroimaging-based biomarkers, we conducted a comprehensive literature search to identify all studies that used multivariate pattern recognition to identify patterns of brain alterations that differentiate patients with schizophrenia from healthy controls. A bivariate random-effects meta-analytic model was implemented to investigate the sensitivity and specificity across studies as well as to assess the robustness to potentially confounding variables. In the total sample of n=38 studies (1602 patients and 1637 healthy controls), patients were differentiated from controls with a sensitivity of 80.3% (95% CI: 76.7–83.5%) and a specificity of 80.3% (95% CI: 76.9–83.3%). Analysis of neuroimaging modality indicated higher sensitivity (84.46%, 95% CI: 79.9–88.2%) and similar specificity (76.9%, 95% CI: 71.3–81.6%) of rsfMRI studies as compared with structural MRI studies (sensitivity: 76.4%, 95% CI: 71.9–80.4%, specificity of 79.0%, 95% CI: 74.6–82.8%). Moderator analysis identified significant effects of age (p=0.029), imaging modality (p=0.019), and disease stage (p=0.025) on sensitivity as well as of positive-to-negative symptom ratio (p=0.022) and antipsychotic medication (p=0.016) on specificity. Our results underline the utility of multivariate pattern recognition approaches for the identification of reliable neuroimaging-based biomarkers. Despite the clinical heterogeneity of the schizophrenia phenotype, brain functional and structural alterations differentiate schizophrenic patients from healthy controls with 80% sensitivity and specificity

On the issue of the ideological policy in the Ukrainian historical science in 1970s (a stenograph of the Feudalism History Department of the Institute of History of the AS of Ukrainian SSR meeting concerning O. S. Kompan’s review of the edition "History of Ukrainian Art")

In the publication the author presents a meeting protocol of the Feudalism History Department of the AS of Ukrainian SSR of November 15, 1967). The Department meeting was held in order to discuss (practically, to denounce) an article of a Senior Research Fellow, Doctor of Historical Sciences Olena Kompan. The article entitled "UkrainianRenaissance. The historian’s refl ections on the issues of Art Studies", published in the newspaper "Literary Ukraine" (October 17, 1967) was a review of the first two volumes of the "History of Ukrainian Art". The article indeed was discussed on the meeting, however it was not crucified, as most of the meeting participants supported the reviewer. The colleagues of Olena Kompan, M. Braichevsky, O. Apanovych, K. Stetsiuk and D. Myshko expressed their opinions concerning her article. The publication preface contains the history of Olena Kompan’s article-review, main conclusions and provisions, as well as the feedback the article received from numerous readers, colleagues and party’s "academicians

The article describes the history of acquisition, structure and documental composition of the personal archival fond of the Ukrainian historian Olena Kompan (1816-1986). She was a researcher of the history of Ukraine in the late Middle Ages and the early Modern Era, a scientist with an active social position keeping in touch with the movement of the "sixtiers". The article covers O. Kompan’s biography, outlines her life as a researcher. The author analyzes the structural documental groups of O. Kompan’s personal archive, which were specificated as a result of the fond scientific processing. Particular attention is paid to the section "Scientific and Creative Materials" representing broad scientific interests of O. Kompan as a historian and a historiosopher. A group of documents "Materials of the Fond Creator Relatives", containing the researcher’s husband documents, is of great interest. Her husband was a famous Ukrainian writer - Ivan Senchenko. Another noteworthy category is "Materials of other People" including the documents of the former political prisoners - Ukrainian scientists Pavlo Fedorenko (1880-1962) and Yevhen Stashevsky (1884-1938

"The Great Fires are Burning behind the Rapid River": Olena Kompan’s review of the books of Ya. Ye. Borovskyi "The Origin of Kyiv: Historiographical Essay" (Kyiv, 1981) and "The Mythological World of Ancient Kievans" (Kyiv, 1982)

A review of the Ukrainian Soviet historian, doctor of historical sciences Olena Kompan (1916-1986), found in the personal archival fund of the scientist (F. 297) in the Institute of the Manuscript of Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine has been brought to the scientific circulation for the first time. The review deals with two popular scientific works by Kyiv archaeologist Yaroslav Borovskyi: “The Origin of Kyiv: Historiographical Essay” (Kyiv, 1981) and “Mythological World of Ancient Kievans” (Kyiv, 1982). The review article shows one of the many facets of the talent of Olena Kompan: the ability to think broadly and conceptually, to highlight the original aspects of the analyzed scientific work, creating around it a separate, independent work. And finally, it shows a great writer’s talent of an extraordinary researcher. The review, written in the last period of O. Kompan’s life, expands the source base not only for the reconstruction of historical views of the scholar. It is of interest to researchers of the creative heritage of the Soviet scholars who were forced to exist within the framework of the severely regulated Soviet meta-narrative. In the foreword to the publication, the scientific interests of Olena Kompan are briefly analyzed, with an emphasis on those scientific views that distinguished her from the masses of the Soviet historians of the 30s and 70s

Learning Human Motion Models from Unsegmented Videos

    No full text
We present a novel method for learning human motion models from unsegmented videos. We propose a unified framework that encodes spatio-temporal relationships between descriptive motion parts and the appearance of individual poses. Sparse sets of spatial and spatio-temporal features are used. The method automatically learns static pose models and spatio-temporal motion parts. Neither motion cycles nor human figures need to be segmented for learning. We test the model on a publicly available action dataset and demonstrate that our new method performs well on a number of classification tasks. We also show that classification rates are improved by increasing the number of pose models in the framework. 1
