Synergy between magneto-rheological fluids and aluminum foams. Prospective alternative for seismic damping
This is the accepted manuscript. Access to the published article can be gained at: http://jim.sagepub.com/cgi/reprint/1045389X15596624v1.pdf?ijkey=SyFHNQwE4XMQqBF&keytype=finiteThis article presents the experimental study of a preliminary investigation of a seismic damper device aimed at improving the behavior of structures when subjected to earthquakes. The damper is the result of a binomial material formed by aluminum foam with pores 1 mm in diameter, wetted by a magnetorheological fluid (MRF). The objective of the present work is to explore the synergy between the two components in a magnetorheological test, and to evaluate the effect of the Al foam pores in the structure buildup of the fluid. The analysis is completed with a compressive test carried out on the MRF-filled foam in the presence of a magnetic field. This kind of test demonstrates that the deformation of the foam for very small loads is limited by the hardening of the fluid because of its MR response. The results of this research suggest that there is a mutual benefit between the components of the device, presumably leading to an enhanced dissipation of vibration energy.Proyectos PE2012-FQM694 (Junta de Andalucía, Spain), FIS2013-47666-C3-1-R (MINECO, Spain), SENER-CONACYT "151496" (UNAM Mexico), CONACYT National Quality Graduate Progra
Topics on n-ary algebras
We describe the basic properties of two n-ary algebras, the Generalized Lie
Algebras (GLAs) and, particularly, the Filippov (or n-Lie) algebras (FAs), and
comment on their n-ary Poisson counterparts, the Generalized Poisson (GP) and
Nambu-Poisson (N-P) structures. We describe the Filippov algebra cohomology
relevant for the central extensions and infinitesimal deformations of FAs. It
is seen that semisimple FAs do not admit central extensions and, moreover, that
they are rigid. This extends the familiar Whitehead's lemma to all
FAs, n=2 being the standard Lie algebra case. When the n-bracket of the FAs is
no longer required to be fully skewsymmetric one is led to the n-Leibniz (or
Loday's) algebra structure. Using that FAs are a particular case of n-Leibniz
algebras, those with an anticommutative n-bracket, we study the class of
n-Leibniz deformations of simple FAs that retain the skewsymmetry for the first
n-1 entires of the n-Leibniz bracket.Comment: 11 page
Efficient calculation of higher-order optical waveguide dispersion
Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)An efficient numerical strategy to compute the higher-order dispersion parameters of optical waveguides is presented. For the first time to our knowledge, a systematic study of the errors involved in the higher-order dispersions' numerical calculation process is made, showing that the present strategy can accurately model those parameters. Such strategy combines a full-vectorial finite element modal solver and a proper finite difference differentiation algorithm. Its performance has been carefully assessed through the analysis of several key geometries. In addition, the optimization of those higher-order dispersion parameters can also be carried out by coupling to the present scheme a genetic algorithm, as shown here through the design of a photonic crystal fiber suitable for parametric amplification applications. Unifying N=5 and N=6
We write the Lagrangian of the general N=5 three-dimensional superconformal
Chern-Simons theory, based on a basic Lie superalgebra, in terms of our
recently introduced N=5 three-algebras. These include N=6 and N=8
three-algebras as special cases. When we impose an antisymmetry condition on
the triple product, the supersymmetry automatically enhances, and the N=5
Lagrangian reduces to that of the well known N=6 theory, including the ABJM and
ABJ models.Comment: 19 pages. v2: Published version. Minor typos corrected, references

Alcohol Production as an Adaptive Livelihood Strategy for Women Farmers in Tanzania and Its Potential for Unintended Consequences on Women's Reproductive Health.
Although women occupy a central position in agriculture in many developing countries, they face numerous constraints to achieving their full potential including unequal access to assets and limited decision-making authority. We explore the intersection of agricultural livelihoods, food and economic security, and women's sexual and reproductive health in Iringa Region, Tanzania. Our goal was to understand whether the benefits of supporting women in the agricultural sector might also extend to more distal outcomes, including sexual and reproductive health. Using the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework to guide data collection, we conducted 13 focus group discussions (FGD) with female (n = 11) and male farmers (n = 2) and 20 in-depth interviews with agricultural extension officers (n = 10) and village agro-dealers (n = 10). Despite providing the majority of agricultural labor, women have limited control over land and earned income and have little bargaining power. In response to these constraints, women adopt adaptive livelihood strategies, such as alcohol production, that allow them to retain control over income and support their households. However, women's central role in alcohol production, in concert with the ubiquitous nature of alcohol consumption, places them at risk by enhancing their vulnerability to unsafe or transactional sex. This represents a dangerous confluence of risk for female farmers, in which alcohol plays an important role in income generation and also facilitates high-risk sexual behavior. Alcohol production and consumption has the potential to both directly and indirectly place women at risk for undesirable sexual and reproductive health outcomes. Group formation, better access to finance, and engaging with agricultural extension officers were identified as potential interventions for supporting women farmers and challenging harmful gender norms. In addition, joint, multi-sectoral approaches from health and agriculture and alternative income-generating strategies for women might better address the complexities of achieving safe and sustainable livelihoods for women in this context
Análisis del somatotipo de jugadores juveniles de fútbol asociación
The anthropometric characteristics of the subjects in association football were rarely considered in the selection of young soccer players in relation to their positions on the pitch. At present, in this sport it is becoming more and more frequent, as well as adding variables that contribute to the improvement of sports performance. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to identify and analyze the somatotype of amateur level players enrolled in the delfines academy who participate in the Veracruz soccer league, within the selection criteria of the participants is that they are in the age range of 14-17 years, they were evaluated for body composition through the bioimpedance technique (tanita tbf 300a, manual), with this the values of weight, height, and BMI were obtained. Likewise, the anthropometry technique was obtained to obtain a complete profile of each player taking as a reference the calculation of the Heath - Carter somatotype, one of the results obtained is the prevalence of the endomorph somatotype for the forwards (2.87 ± 0. 76), defenders (2.99±0.55) and midfielders (2.55±0.47) and mesomorph: forwards (5.34±1.17), defenders (5.86±1.55) and midfielders (4.71±0.67), It was shown that the means present less mesomorphy and greater ectomorphy with (3.64±1.29). It is concluded from the results obtained that the predominance is of the balanced mesomorphic component, a situation that coincides with the results of other investigations, where the players of the amateur sector and professional soccer players according to the position they occupy on the pitch presenting a somatotype similar to those found in the studyLas características antropométricas de los sujetos en el fútbol asociación pocas veces eran consideradas en la selección de los jóvenes futbolistas en relación con sus posiciones dentro del terreno de juego.
Eosinophilic pneumonia associated with daptomycin: a case report and a review of the literature

Abstract

Introduction

Although several studies did not demonstrate that daptomycin may cause significantly higher rates of pulmonary adverse effects when compared with vancomycin or penicillinase-resistant penicillins, there have been a few case reports of severe pulmonary complications associated with daptomycin administration.

Case presentation

A rare case of eosinophilic pneumonia occurring 10 days after daptomycin administration in a 78-year-old Caucasian man with possible infectious endocarditis is described. He developed new onset fever, up to 38.5°C, with bilateral pulmonary crackles on physical examination and with no signs of severe respiratory failure. A chest computed tomography-scan showed bilateral nodular consolidations with air bronchograms and pleural effusions. Immediate discontinuation of daptomycin was followed by vigorous improvement of clinical signs and symptoms with progressive resolution of pulmonary consolidations a month later.

Conclusion

Physicians should be aware of this rare but serious complication during daptomycin treatment, and prompt discontinuation of the offending agent, with or without additional supportive treatment, must occur immediately.</p
Asymptotic W-symmetries in three-dimensional higher-spin gauge theories
We discuss how to systematically compute the asymptotic symmetry algebras of
generic three-dimensional bosonic higher-spin gauge theories in backgrounds
that are asymptotically AdS. We apply these techniques to a one-parameter
family of higher-spin gauge theories that can be considered as large N limits
of SL(N) x SL(N) Chern-Simons theories, and we provide a closed formula for the
structure constants of the resulting infinite-dimensional non-linear
W-algebras. Along the way we provide a closed formula for the structure
constants of all classical W_N algebras. In both examples the higher-spin
generators of the W-algebras are Virasoro primaries. We eventually discuss how
to relate our basis to a non-primary quadratic basis that was previously
discussed in literature.Comment: 61 page
