    A consistent approach for probabilistic residential flood loss modeling in Europe

    In view of globally increasing flood losses, a significantly improved and more efficient flood risk management and adaptation policy are needed. One prerequisite is reliable risk assessments on the continental scale. Flood loss modeling and risk assessments for Europe are until now based on regional approaches using deterministic depth‐damage functions. Uncertainties associated with the risk estimation are hardly known. To reduce these shortcomings, we present a novel, consistent approach for probabilistic flood loss modeling for Europe, based on the upscaling of the Bayesian Network Flood Loss Estimation MOdel for the private sector, BN‐FLEMOps. The model is applied on the mesoscale in the whole of Europe and can be adapted to regional situations. BN‐FLEMOps is validated in three case studies in Italy, Austria, and Germany. The officially reported loss figures of the past flood events are within the 95% quantile range of the probabilistic loss estimation, for all three case studies. In the Italian, Austrian, and German case studies, the median loss estimate shows an overestimation by 28% (2.1 million euro) and 305% (5.8 million euro) and an underestimation by 43% (104 million euro), respectively. In two of the three case studies, the performance of the model improved, when updated with empirical damage data from the area of interest. This approach represents a step forward in European wide flood risk modeling, since it delivers consistent flood loss estimates and inherently provides uncertainty information. Further validation and tests with respect to adapting the model to different European regions are recommended

    We deal with the existence of positive solutions for a two-point boundary value problem associated with the nonlinear second order equation u+a(x)g(u)=0u''+a(x)g(u)=0. The weight a(x)a(x) is allowed to change its sign. We assume that the function g ⁣:[0,+[Rg\colon\mathopen{[}0,+\infty\mathclose{[}\to\mathbb{R} is continuous, g(0)=0g(0)=0 and satisfies suitable growth conditions, so as the case g(s)=spg(s)=s^{p}, with p>1p>1, is covered. In particular we suppose that g(s)/sg(s)/s is large near infinity, but we do not require that g(s)g(s) is non-negative in a neighborhood of zero. Using a topological approach based on the Leray-Schauder degree we obtain a result of existence of at least a positive solution that improves previous existence theorems.Comment: 12 pages, 4 PNG figure

    Applicability of a Markov-chain Monte Carlo method for damage detection on data from the Z-24 and Tamar suspension bridges

    In the Structural Health Monitoring of bridges, the effects of the operational and environmental variability on the structural responses have posed several challenges for early damage detection. In order to overcome those challenges, in the last decade recourse has been made to the statistical pattern recognition paradigm based on vibration data from long-term monitoring. The use of purely data-based algorithms that do not depend on the physical descriptions of the structures have characterized this paradigm. However, one drawback of this procedure is how to set up the baseline condition for new and existing bridges. Therefore, this paper proposes an algorithm with a Bayesian approach based on a Markov-chain Monte Carlo method to cluster structural responses of the bridges into a reduced number of global state conditions, by taking into account eventual multimodality and heterogeneity of the data distribution. This approach, along with the Mahalanobis squared-distance, permits one to form an algorithm able to detect structural damage based on daily response data even under abnormal events caused by operational and environmental variability. The applicability of this approach is first demonstrated on standard data sets from the Z-24 Bridge, Switzerland. Afterwards, for generalization purposes, it is applied on datasets from a supposed undamaged bridge condition, namely the Tamar Bridge, England. The analysis suggests that this algorithm might be useful for bridge applications, because it permits one to overcome some of the limitations posed by the pattern recognition paradigm, especially when dealing with limited amounts of training data.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    A progressive refinement approach for the visualisation of implicit surfaces

    Visualising implicit surfaces with the ray casting method is a slow procedure. The design cycle of a new implicit surface is, therefore, fraught with long latency times as a user must wait for the surface to be rendered before being able to decide what changes should be introduced in the next iteration. In this paper, we present an attempt at reducing the design cycle of an implicit surface modeler by introducing a progressive refinement rendering approach to the visualisation of implicit surfaces. This progressive refinement renderer provides a quick previewing facility. It first displays a low quality estimate of what the final rendering is going to be and, as the computation progresses, increases the quality of this estimate at a steady rate. The progressive refinement algorithm is based on the adaptive subdivision of the viewing frustrum into smaller cells. An estimate for the variation of the implicit function inside each cell is obtained with an affine arithmetic range estimation technique. Overall, we show that our progressive refinement approach not only provides the user with visual feedback as the rendering advances but is also capable of completing the image faster than a conventional implicit surface rendering algorithm based on ray casting

    HOW TO START IN BACKSTROKE CONSIDERING THE NEW RULES?

    FINA recently changed the rule that governs the starting position for the backstroke starting technique. With this change, swimmers may now decide to start with the feet emerged, which was previously strictly forbidden. This new liberalization naturally determines the rise of a new technical question for swimmers and coaches: do a starting position with the feet emerged allow a better performance, or better performance conditions for the following actions? To our knowledge no previous scientific results are available concerning this question, allowing to support any technical decision. During this presentation we will try to deliver arguments to support a technical option in this particular topic, based on the research developed by our group, comparing the traditional starting technique with the feet immerged (BSFI), with the one allowed nowadays, with both feet totally, or partially, emerged (BSFE). To fulfil this purpose, we studied six experienced male swimmers that maximally performed 4 repetitions of each technique over a distance of 15 meters. All performances were dual-media videotaped (50 Hz) in the sagittal plane, synchronized with kinetic and EMG data simultaneously registered. Kinetic data were assessed using an underwater force plate mounted on a special support on the wall of the pool, allowing the registration of the horizontal component of the forces exerted by the swimmers’ feet. The handgrip system was adapted to reproduce its legal position and configuration, but instrumented with a load cell (Globus, Italy) to allow the assessment of the horizontal component of the forces exerted by swimmers’ upper limbs. Findings pointed out that BSFI was significantly faster till the 5m reference, with less muscular activity, and with a tendency to produce higher forces against the starting wall. No argument was obtained to support the use of the BSFE in swimming competitions

In pathogenic micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi, parasites) they often play a critical role in virulence and pathogenicity. A few phospholipases (PL) have been characterised so far at the gene and protein level in unicellular parasites including African trypanosomes (AT). They could play a role in different processes such as host–pathogen interaction, antigenic variation, intermediary metabolism. By mining the genome database of AT we found putative new phospholipase candidate genes and here we provided biochemical evidence that one of these has lipolytic activity. This protein has a unique non-canonical glycosome targeting signal responsible for its dual localisation in the cytosol and the peroxisomes-related organelles named glycosomes. We also show that this new phospholipase is excreted by these pathogens and that antibodies directed against this protein are generated during an experimental infection with T. brucei gambiense, a subspecies responsible for infection in humans. This feature makes this protein a possible tool for diagnosis.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
