    Studies for single bunch and multi-bunch beam instabilities in the Diamond-II booster

    To reduce filling times and enable advanced injection schemes, it is desirable for the Diamond-II booster to provide high charge in both single and multi-bunch modes. The single bunch charge will be limited by short range wakefields in the booster, and long-range wakefields limit the charge for the multi-bunch trains. Due to the relatively low 100 MeV injection energy into the booster, the injected beam is susceptible to instabilities due to the very weak synchrotron radiation damping. In this paper, we present the simulation results carried out to estimate the single and multi-bunch charge thresholds in the Diamond-II booster including short and long range wakefields, RF cavity HOMs, and with physical apertures applied. Simulations results will also be presented that demonstrate the extracted multi-bunch charge could be increased by installing a transverse multi-bunch feedback (TMBF)

    Correlating corneal arcus with atherosclerosis in familial hypercholesterolemia

    Abstract Background A relationship between corneal arcus and atherosclerosis has long been suspected but is controversial. The homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia patients in this study present a unique opportunity to assess this issue. They have both advanced atherosclerosis and corneal arcus. Methods This is a cross-sectional study of 17 patients homozygous for familial hypercholesterolemia presenting to the Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health. Plasma lipoproteins, circumferential extent of arcus, thoracic aorta and coronary calcific atherosclerosis score, and Achilles tendon width were measured at the National Institutes of Health. Results Patients with corneal arcus had higher scores for calcific atherosclerosis (mean 2865 compared to 412), cholesterol-year score (mean 11830 mg-yr/dl compared to 5707 mg-yr/dl), and Achilles tendon width (mean 2.54 cm compared to 1.41 cm) than those without. Corneal arcus and Achilles tendon width were strongly correlated and predictive of each other. Although corneal arcus was correlated with calcific atherosclerosis (r = 0.67; p = 0.004), it was not as highly correlated as was the Achilles tendon width (r = 0.855; p Conclusion Corneal arcus reflects widespread tissue lipid deposition and is correlated with both calcific atherosclerosis and xanthomatosis in these patients. Patients with more severe arcus tend to have more severe calcific atherosclerosis. Corneal arcus is not as good an indicator of calcific atherosclerosis as Achilles tendon thickness, but its presence suggests increased atherosclerosis in these hypercholesterolemic patients.</p

    We report the results of recent beam dynamics studies of the Diamond storage ring. These studies were aimed at both improving our understanding of the machine operation as well as establishing a reliable, well corrected lattice with long lifetime and high injection efficiency suitable for later top-up operation. Particular attention has been given to measuring and controlling the linear optics of the lattice, to determining the various contributions to the overall beam lifetime and to optimising the sextupole strengths for good on and off momentum dynamic aperture. For each topic, detailed comparisons with model predictions are also described

In common with other facilities, a method of energy measurement based on resonant spin depolarisation has been developed at Diamond. In this paper we report on progress towards storage ring characterisation using this method, as well as describing the diagnostics developments that have enabled these measurements to be made.
