    Edging your bets: advantage play, gambling, crime and victimisation

    Consumerism, industrial development and regulatory liberalisation have underpinned the ascendance of gambling to a mainstream consumption practice. In particular, the online gambling environment has been marketed as a site of ‘safe risks’ where citizens can engage in a multitude of different forms of aleatory consumption. This paper offers a virtual ethnography of an online ‘advantage play’ subculture. It demonstrates how advantage players have reinterpreted the online gambling landscape as an environment saturated with crime and victimisation. In this virtual world, advantage play is no longer simply an instrumental act concerned with profit accumulation to finance consumer desires. Rather, it acts as an opportunity for individuals to engage in a unique form of edgework, whereby the threat to one’s well-being is tested through an ability to avoid crime and victimisation.     Scaling of the superfluid density in high-temperature superconductors

    A scaling relation \rho_s \simeq 35\sigma_{dc}T_c has been observed in the copper-oxide superconductors, where \rho_s is the strength of the superconducting condensate, T_c is the critical temperature, and \sigma_{dc} is the normal-state dc conductivity close to T_c. This scaling relation is examined within the context of a clean and dirty-limit BCS superconductor. These limits are well established for an isotropic BCS gap 2\Delta and a normal-state scattering rate 1/\tau; in the clean limit 1/\tau \ll 2\Delta, and in the dirty limit 1/\tau > 2\Delta. The dirty limit may also be defined operationally as the regime where \rho_s varies with 1/\tau. It is shown that the scaling relation \rho_s \propto \sigma_{dc}T_c is the hallmark of a BCS system in the dirty-limit. While the gap in the copper-oxide superconductors is considered to be d-wave with nodes and a gap maximum \Delta_0, if 1/\tau > 2\Delta_0 then the dirty-limit case is preserved. The scaling relation implies that the copper-oxide superconductors are likely to be in the dirty limit, and that as a result the energy scale associated with the formation of the condensate is scaling linearly with T_c. The a-b planes and the c axis also follow the same scaling relation. It is observed that the scaling behavior for the dirty limit and the Josephson effect (assuming a BCS formalism) are essentially identical, suggesting that in some regime these two effects may be viewed as equivalent. This raises the possibility that electronic inhomogeneities in the copper-oxygen planes may play an important role in the nature of the superconductivity in the copper-oxide materials.Comment: 8 pages with 5 figures and 1 tabl

    A general self-energy formulation of the interaction between an electron in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) and a localized target is given. We prove a theorem relating the probability of energy transfer to that calculated classically. Local dielectric theory of target excitation for various geometries is discussed. The problem of localization of initially unlocalized excitations in the valence band of solids is treated by transforming cross sections differential in momentum transfer into dependence on an impact parameter variable. We are thereby able to account for experimental data in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) that show high spatial resolution

    In this paper we report on our theoretical studies of various aspects of the correlated stopping power of two point-like ions (a dicluster) moving in close but variable vicinity of each other in some metallic target materials the latter being modelled by a degenerate electron gas with appropriate densities. Within the linear response theory we have made a comprehensive investigation of correlated stopping power, vicinage function and related quantities for a diproton cluster in two metallic targets, aluminum and copper, and present detailed and comparative results for three approximations to the electron gas dielectric function, namely the plasmon-pole approximation without and with dispersion as well as with the random phase approximation.     Genetic studies of human apolipoproteins

    Apolipoprotein H (APO H) has recently been identified as a structural component of chylomicrons, very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), low-density lipoproteins (LDL), and high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Although the precise metabolic function of APO H in lipid metabolism is not certain, it has been suggested that APO H may be involved in triglyceride (TG) metabolism. In addition to the previously described quantitative polymorphism, we have recently detected a common qualitative polymorphism at the APO H structural locus. To test the role of APO H genetic variation in determining lipoprotein and lipid levels, we have estimated the allelic effects of APO H variation on TG, VLDL, LDL, HDL, HDL3, and total cholesterol on 356 Nigerian blacks(189 males, 167 females). While no significant effect of phenotype was observed on lipoprotein levels, the effect of interaction between phenotype and gender was significant. Therefore, data on males and females were analyzed separately using analysis of variance after adjusting for age and body mass index. Logarithmic transformation of pertinent variables was done to bring the distribution of the variables closer to normality. A statistically significant effect of phenotype was observed on triglyceride levels in females only (P<0.05). Further analysis of this phenotypic effect revealed that it is due to the impact of the APO H∗ 3 allele, which raises triglycerides by 9.92 mg/dl as compared to the common allele, APO H ∗2. These findings are in accordance with the postulated role of APO H in triglyceride metabolism. On the basis of its sex-specific effect, we propose a hypothesis that may explain the combined influence of the quantitative and qualitative polymorphisms at the APO H locus on triglyceride levels in females

    Genetic studies of human apolipoproteins. XI. The effect of the apolipoprotein C-II polymorphism on lipoprotein levels in Nigerian blacks

    The human apolipoprotein C-II locus exhibits genetically determined structural polymorphism in United States and African blacks. In the present study, we have investigated the effect of the apoC-II polymorphism on quantitative serum levels of total cholesterol, total high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, cholesterol in high density lipoprotein subfractions, low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides (TG) in a sample of 368 unrelated Nigerian blacks. The frequencies of the APOC-II1 and APOC-II2 alleles in the samples were 0.947 and 0.053, respectively. In males, the effect of the APOC-II2 allele was to lower the total serum cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels by 13.28 mg/dl and 10.55 mg/dl, respectively, relative to the common allele, APOC-II1. In females, the effect was to lower total plasma cholesterol by 4.49 mg/dl and LDL-cholesterol by 3.21 mg/dl. The effect of apoC-II on quantitative lipoprotein levels is shown to be independent of variation at the linked apoE locus, but the products of the two loci interact in determining overall quantitative phenotypes

    Simple tandem repeat (TTTA)(n )polymorphism in CYP19 (aromatase) gene and breast cancer risk in Nigerian women

    BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer related deaths in women worldwide. The incidence of the disease is increasing globally and this increase is occurring at a faster rate in population groups that hirtherto enjoyed low incidence. This study was designed to evaluate the role of a simple tandem repeat polymorphism (STRP) in the aromatase (CYP19) gene in breast cancer susceptibility in Nigerian women, a population of indigenous sub-Saharan African ancestry. METHODS: A case-control study recruiting 250 women with breast cancer and 250 women without the disease from four University Teaching Hospitals in Southern Nigeria was carried out between September 2002 and April 2004. Participants were recruited from the surgical outpatient clinics and surgical wards of the Nigerian institutions. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assay was employed for genotyping and product sizes were detected with an ABI 3730 DNA Analyzer. RESULTS: Conditional logistic regression analysis revealed that harboring the putative high risk genotypes conferred a 29% increased risk of breast cancer when all women in the study were considered (Odds ratio [OR] = 1.29, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.83–2.00), although this association was not statistically significant. Subgroup analysis based on menopausal status showed similar results among premenopausal women (OR = 1.35, 95% CI 0.76–2.41 and postmenopausal women (OR = 1.27, 95% CI 0.64–2.49). The data also demonstrated marked differences in the distribution of (TTTA)(n )repeats in Nigerian women compared with other populations. CONCLUSION: This study has shown that harboring 10 or more repeats of the microsatellite (TTTA)(n )repeats of the CYY19 gene is associated with a modest increased risk of breast cancer in Nigerian women

    Critical structure factor in Ising systems

    We perform a large-scale Monte Carlo simulation of the three-dimensional Ising model on simple cubic lattices of size L^3 with L=128 and 256. We determine the corresponding structure factor (Fourier transform of the two-point function) and compare it with several approximations and with experimental results. We also compute the turbidity as a function of the momentum of the incoming radiation, focusing in particular on the deviations from the Ornstein-Zernicke expression of Puglielli and Ford.Comment: 16 page
