    Le Comunità rurali nella Sardegna medievale (secoli XI-XV)

    «L’esperienza legislativa dei Giudicati e successivamente l’esperienza della legislazione nazionale […], sono state le esperienze giuridicamente più intense della Sardegna, anche se in modi diversi […], e sono più intimamente penetrate nelle consuetudini locali, determinandone spesso la crisi totale, altre volte consentendo, stimolando e condizionando sul lato esterno, quella storia, interna al progresso delle consuetudini originarie, che definisce il più vasto orizzonte culturale delle esperienze autonome e originarie della cultura sarda, pur nei suoi residui arcaici». Così Antonio Pigliaru, professore di Filosofia del diritto nell’Università di Sassari, poneva nel suo La vendetta barbaricina come ordinamento giuridico (1959) il problema del rapporto tra la tradizione consuetudinaria e il sistema giuridico codificato. Pigliaru, ispirandosi alle teorie di Santi Romano, di Widar Cesarini Sforza e di Giuseppe Capograssi sulla pluralità degli ordinamenti, riteneva che la società agro-pastorale sarda avesse elaborato un sistema di norme e al suo interno, un «codice della vendetta», strutturato come un ordinamento giuridico autonomo, che avrebbe regolato le relazioni tra gli individui prescindendo dalle istituzioni dominanti, molto spesso identificate con gli apparati repressivi dello Stato (tribunali, carceri, caserme dei carabinieri). In sostanza Pigliaru ipotizzava che le comunità rurali della Sardegna avessero conservato inalterato nel tempo un patrimonio consuetudinario che affondava le radici negli istituti della normativa statutaria trecentesca e in particolare nella Carta de Logu d’Arborea

    Holistic versus continuous grazing in Patagonia: A station-scale case study of plant and animal production

    We compared animal and vegetation responses of a 13 600-ha area under holistic grazing management (HGM) with a similar area under continuous grazing (CGM) in a Patagonian station. Limitations were a dry 2012 −2016 experimental period, poorer soils, and grazing of native guanacos (Lama guanicoe) in the HGM area. Forage standing crop in this area before the experience was lower and remained so during the study: (194 ±31 HGM vs. 244 ±33 kg dry matter . ha −1 CGM). Six monitoring sites showed similar and remarkable (though mostly nonsignificant) vegetation improvements in total cover (10.6% HGM vs. 10.9% CGM) and cover of short palatable grasses (21.4% vs. 23.9%, respectively). Species richness showed small changes ( −1 vs. −6%), bare soil interpatches decreased ( −11.9 vs. −5.4%), and land function indicators of Stability (5.4% vs. 9.9%), Infiltration (12.4% vs. 12.0%), and Nutrient recycling (4.2% vs. 20.6%) increased. Tussock cover changed significantly with grazing management, as it decreased −6% (ns) in HGM and grew 42% ( P = 0.03) under CGM, probably due to coarse tussock forage consumption in HGM. Sheep under HGM were 15% lighter (43.9 ±0.5 HGM vs. 51.7 ±0.5 kg . ewe −1 CGM P < 0.001), ewes scored 28% lower body condition (1.60 vs. 2.25, P < 0.001), and lambing rates were 36% lower (48.3 ±2.1% vs . 74.2 ±1.9%). Rotation ended in 2015 as a consequence of low lambing rates, and sheep body condition and reproductive rates recovered to similar values in both areas. Positive vegetation changes in both areas may be driven by residual effects of destocking 3 decades ago and show that improvement is possible using moderate stocking rates. Although it could be argued that rest periods of HGM may be positive in the long term, its negative effects on animal production should be addressed, and fast regeneration using intense management in these severely restricted habitats should not be expected.     Are Patagonia grasslands being overgrazed? A response to Marino et al. (2020)

    Based upon primary productivity estimates, Oliva et al. (2019) concluded that, at the end of last century and after long periods of overgrazing, Patagonia's domestic stocks adjusted to regional‐scale herbivore carrying capacity. Populations of guanaco, a native camelid, increased thereafter, driving combined grazing pressures once again over carrying capacity in some areas. Marino et al. (2020) argued that grazing is not really at equilibrium because domestic stocks are concentrated in areas that remain overgrazed. They support the ideas that guanaco density is auto‐regulated by resource‐defence territoriality, and that guanacos are weak competitors with domestic stock, occupying only marginal areas. In their view, Oliva et al. (2019) put guanacos in the role of scapegoats, leaving domestic stocks unchecked. Equilibrium at regional scale does not preclude overgrazing and under‐grazing at local scales. By separating areas with and without domestic stocks, Marino et al. (2020) estimated overgrazing at 28% in Chubut Province and 73% in Santa Cruz Province. Our recalculations show 28% and 47% domestic overgrazing, respectively. However, when combined with guanaco densities, these increase to 48% for Chubut and 108% for Santa Cruz. We question the hypothesised lack of competitive value and efficient self‐regulating mechanisms that would prevent guanaco populations from overshooting carrying capacity. A dataset of 13 sheep farms showed mean density of 26 ± 3.8 guanacos/km2 and high combined grazing pressures. This was also observed in a protected area of Chubut that reached 42 guanacos/km2 and crashed during drought, with 60% mortality. Thereafter, guanacos increased to 70 guanacos/km2, with recruitment rates that showed a complex response of density dependence but remained relatively elevated at densities above the estimated carrying capacity. Synthesis and applications. Marino et al. (2020) are right to question the apparent equilibrium of domestic stocks that are concentrated in areas that may be still overgrazed. But ground data show that guanaco populations have inefficient density population regulation and can reach densities well over carrying capacity, even in the presence of sheep. This does not mean that the main control should be on growing guanaco populations but it stresses our conclusion that joint management of the native‐domestic herbivore system is urgently needed. Joint management can be effected through local plans, as current guanaco management permits can only be issued in areas that are not overgrazed by sheep. Farm management plans may in this way transform an apparent competitor into a valuable resource, complementary to sheep raising.EEA Santa CruzFil: Oliva, Gabriel Esteban.     Development of the Italian version of the pain stages of change questionnaire in patients with chronic low back pain: Cross-cultural adaptation, confirmatory factor analysis, reliability and validity

    Translating, culturally adapting and validating the Italian version of the Pain Stages of Change Questionnaire (PSOCQ-I) to allow its use with Italian-speaking patients with low back pain. The PSOCQ-I was developed by forward-backward translation, a final review by an expert committee and a test of the prefinal version to establish its correspondence with the original English version. Psychometric testing included confirmatory factor analysis, reliability by internal consistency (Cronbach's α) and test-retest reliability (intraclass coefficient correlation), and construct validity by comparing PSOCQ-I with the Pain Catastrophising Scale (PCS), the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK), the Roland Morris Disability Scale (RMDQ), a pain Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (Pearson's correlation). The questionnaire was administered to 308 patients with chronic low back pain. Factor analysis confirmed a four-factor solution (namely, Precontemplation, Contemplation, Action, and Maintenance), achieving an acceptable data-model fit. Internal consistency (α=0.91-93) and test-retest reliability (intraclass coefficient correlation=0.74-0.81) were satisfactory. Construct validity showed moderate correlations between Precontemplation and PCS (r=0.318), TSK (r=0.385), RMDQ (r=0.320) and NRS (r=0.335); low correlations were found between the other PSOCQ subscales and PCS (r=-0.062; 0.039), TSK (r=-0.164; 0.024), RMDQ (r=-0.073; 0.004) and NRS (r=-0.170; 0.020). Low correlations were found between the PSOCQ-I subscales and anxiety (r=-0.132; 0.150) and depression (r=-0.113; 0.186). The PSOCQ was translated successfully into Italian, and proved to have a good factorial structure and psychometric properties that replicated the results of other versions. Its use is recommended for research purposes. © 2014 Wolters Kluwer Health

    Queimadas e saúde: relação entre faltas escolares e incidência das queimadas da cana-de-açúcar

    The objective of this study was to investigate an association between pre-harvest sugarcane burning and respiratory diseases in children under five years of age. The following data were collected in five schools in the city of Araraquara, SP, Southeastern Brazil, between March and June 2009: daily records of absences and the reasons stated for these absences, total concentration of suspended particulate matter (µg/m3), and air humidity. The relationship between the percentage of school absences due to respiratory problems and the concentration of particulate matter in March and from April to June presented a distinct behavior: absences increased alongside the increase in particulate matter concentration. The use of school absences as indicators of this relationship is an innovative approach.Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar se queimadas estão relacionadas a doenças respiratórias em crianças menores de cinco anos. Os dados foram coletados em cinco escolas do município de Araraquara, SP, entre março a junho de 2009, abordando: controle diário das faltas escolares, razões alegadas, concentração total de partículas em suspensão (µg/m3) e umidade do ar.     Orthorexia nervosa, eating patterns and personality traits: a cross-cultural comparison of Italian, Polish and Spanish university students

    Background: The amount of research about orthorexic attitudes and behaviours has increased in the last five years, but is still mainly based on descriptive and anecdotal data, yielding a variety of prevalence data and inconsistent results. The interplay between socio-cultural context and orthorexia has been poorly investigated and is still far from being understood. Method: Multicentre, cross-sectional study involving Italian (N = 216), Polish (N = 206) and Spanish (N = 242) university students, assessed through a protocol including informed consent, socio-demographic and anamnestic data sheet and self-administered questionnaires (ORTO-15, Eating Attitudes Test- 26 [EAT-26], Temperament and Character Inventory [TCI]). Results: Higher prevalence of orthorexia (as described by the ORTO-15 cutoff) was found in Poland. Female gender, Body Mass Index (BMI), current Eating Disorder, dieting, EAT-26 score ≥ 20 and low/medium Persistence were associated with orthorexia in the whole sample. The cross-cultural comparison showed several differences among the three subgroups of students. Conclusions: The associations found between orthorexic attitudes, self-reported current eating disorder, BMI and adherence to a dieting need to be supported by further research. The differences among students from the three countries seem to suggest a possible rolve for cultural elements in the construct of orthorexia

    Metabolomic Profiling, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activity of Bidens pilosa

    Bidens pilosa L. (fam. Asteraceae) is an annual herb used globally in phytotherapy and each plant material or the whole plant have been declared to be effective. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to conduct metabolomic profiling of different plant materials, including the quali-quantitative composition of phenolic compounds. The intrinsic scavenging/reducing properties and antimicrobial effects of the extracts were assayed against numerous bacterial, Candida and dermatophytes species, whereas docking runs were conducted for tentatively unravelling the mechanism of action underlying antimicrobial effects. Oligosaccharide, disaccharide and fatty acids were present at higher concentrations in root rather than in the other plant parts. Monoglycerides were more abundant in stem than in the other plant parts, whereas peptide and diterpenoid were prominent in leaf and root, respectively. By contrast, amino acids showed very different distribution patterns in the four plant parts. Regarding the phenolic composition, appreciable levels of caftaric acid were found in most of the analyzed methanol extracts, that were also particularly efficacious as antiradical and anti-mycotic agents against C. albicans and dermatophytes. The docking experiments also showed a micromolar affinity of caftaric acid towards the lanosterol 14α-demethylase, deeply involved in fungal metabolism. In conclusion, the present study corroborates the B. pilosa as a phytotherapy remedy against infectious disease

    Polθ: emerging synthetic lethal partner in homologous recombination-deficient tumors

    The most remarkable finding in synthetic lethality (SL) is the hypersensitivity to PARP inhibitors (PARPis) of the tumors harboring defects in genes involved in homologous repair (HR) such as BRCA1/2. Despite initial responsiveness to PARPi, the penetrance of the synthetic lethal interactions between BRCA1/2 genes and PARPi is incomplete. Thus, a significant proportion of HR-defective tumors experience intrinsic or acquired resistance, representing a key challenge of clinical research. An expanded concept of SL is opening new ways and includes novel forms of genetic interactions, investigating not only traditional SL of pairs genes but also SL between biological pathways that regulate the same essential survival cell function. In this context, recent research showed that HR and theta-mediated end-joining (TMEJ) pathways exhibit SL. DNA polymerase theta (Pol theta) is encoded by the POLQ gene and is a key component of the TMEJ, an essential backup pathway, intrinsically mutagenic, to repair resected double-strand breaks (DSBs) when the non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) and HR are impaired. Pol theta is broadly expressed in normal tissues, overexpressed in several cancers, and typically associated with poor outcomes and shorter relapse-free survival. Notably, HR-deficient tumor cells present the characteristic mutational signatures of the error-prone TMEJ pathway. According to this observation, the loss of HR proteins, such as BRCA1 or BRCA2, contributes to increasing the TMEJ-specific genomic profile, suggesting synthetic lethal interactions between loss of the POLQ and HR genes, and resulting in the emerging interest for Pol theta as a potential therapeutic target in BRCA1/2-associated tumors.This review summarizes the converging roles of the POLQ and HR genes in DNA DSB repair, the early-stage clinical trials using Pol theta inhibitor to treat HR-defective tumors and to overcome BRCA-reversion mutations responsible for therapeutic resistance, and the novel pleiotropic effects of Pol theta, paving the way for the development of unexplored synthetic lethality strategies
