Structure of TiAlN Reactive Sputtered Coatings
The Raman spectra, X-ray diffraction and hardness of the TiAlN films co-deposited on the steel substrates
by reactive sputtering from Ti and Al targets in a mixture of N2 + Ar gas with two magnetrons at
room temperature have been studied. From Raman spectra it is found that the position of high-frequency
bands in vibrational spectra was located at 700-730 cm 1 or in the region of 830 850 cm 1 depending on
the deposition parameters whereas it is not exceed 630 cm 1 from TiAlN of NaCl structure. It is found the
two-phase structure of coatings: a small quantity of NaCl-type structure of TiAlN (TiN) and the disordered
structure of the chains of polyhedra [TiNx] with x = 5 and x = 4. The chains of polyhedra [TiNx] with x = 4
are mainly formed at large discharge power of Al(Ti) target or at small content of N2 gas.

RNA Polymerase Pausing during Initial Transcription
In bacteria, RNA polymerase (RNAP) initiates transcription
by synthesizing short transcripts that are
either released or extended to allow RNAP to escape
from the promoter. The mechanism of initial transcription
is unclear due to the presence of transient
intermediates and molecular heterogeneity. Here,
we studied initial transcription on a lac promoter
using single-molecule fluorescence observations
of DNA scrunching on immobilized transcription
complexes. Our work revealed a long pause (‘‘initiation
pause,’’ 20 s) after synthesis of a 6-mer RNA;
such pauses can serve as regulatory checkpoints.
Region sigma 3.2, which contains a loop blocking
the RNA exit channel, was a major pausing determinant.
We also obtained evidence for RNA backtracking
during abortive initial transcription and for
additional pausing prior to escape. We summarized
our work in a model for initial transcription, in which
pausing is controlled by a complex set of determinants
that modulate the transition from a 6- to a
7-nt RNA
Ordering in the dilute weakly-anisotropic antiferromagnet Mn(0.35)Zn(0.65)F2
The highly diluted antiferromagnet Mn(0.35)Zn(0.65)F2 has been investigated
by neutron scattering in zero field. The Bragg peaks observed below the Neel
temperature TN (approximately 10.9 K) indicate stable antiferromagnetic
long-range ordering at low temperature. The critical behavior is governed by
random-exchange Ising model critical exponents (nu approximately 0.69 and gamma
approximately 1.31), as reported for Mn(x)Zn(1-x)F2 with higher x and for the
isostructural compound Fe(x)Zn(1-x)F2. However, in addition to the Bragg peaks,
unusual scattering behavior appears for |q|>0 below a glassy temperature Tg
approximately 7.0 K. The glassy region T<Tg corresponds to that of noticeable
frequency dependence in earlier zero-field ac susceptibility measurements on
this sample. These results indicate that long-range order coexists with
short-range nonequilibrium clusters in this highly diluted magnet.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Threshold neutral pion photoproduction off the tri-nucleon to O(q^4)
We calculate electromagnetic neutral pion production off tri-nucleon bound
states (3H, 3He) at threshold in chiral nuclear effective field theory to
fourth order in the standard heavy baryon counting. We show that the fourth
order two-nucleon corrections to the S-wave multipoles at threshold are very
small. This implies that a precise measurement of the S-wave cross section for
neutral pion production off 3He allows for a stringent test of the chiral
perturbation theory prediction for the S-wave electric multipole E_{0+}^{pi0
n}.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, title changed, final version to appear in EPJA.

A minimal Beta Beam with high-Q ions to address CP violation in the leptonic sector
In this paper we consider a Beta Beam setup that tries to leverage at most
existing European facilities: i.e. a setup that takes advantage of facilities
at CERN to boost high-Q ions (8Li and 8B) aiming at a far detector located at L
= 732 Km in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory. The average neutrino energy
for 8Li and 8B ions boosted at \gamma ~ 100 is in the range E_\nu = [1,2] GeV,
high enough to use a large iron detector of the MINOS type at the far site. We
perform, then, a study of the neutrino and antineutrino fluxes needed to
measure a CP-violating phase delta in a significant part of the parameter
space. In particular, for theta_13 > 3 deg, if an antineutrino flux of 3 10^19
useful 8Li decays per year is achievable, we find that delta can be measured in
60% of the parameter space with 6 10^18 useful 8B decays per year.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, added references and corrected typo
Search for supersymmetry with a dominant R-parity violating LQDbar couplings in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 130GeV to 172 GeV
A search for pair-production of supersymmetric particles under the assumption
that R-parity is violated via a dominant LQDbar coupling has been performed
using the data collected by ALEPH at centre-of-mass energies of 130-172 GeV.
The observed candidate events in the data are in agreement with the Standard
Model expectation. This result is translated into lower limits on the masses of
charginos, neutralinos, sleptons, sneutrinos and squarks. For instance, for
m_0=500 GeV/c^2 and tan(beta)=sqrt(2) charginos with masses smaller than 81
GeV/c^2 and neutralinos with masses smaller than 29 GeV/c^2 are excluded at the
95% confidence level for any generation structure of the LQDbar coupling.Comment: 32 pages, 30 figure
Search for charginos in e+e- interactions at sqrt(s) = 189 GeV
An update of the searches for charginos and gravitinos is presented, based on
a data sample corresponding to the 158 pb^{-1} recorded by the DELPHI detector
in 1998, at a centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV. No evidence for a signal was
found. The lower mass limits are 4-5 GeV/c^2 higher than those obtained at a
centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV. The (\mu,M_2) MSSM domain excluded by
combining the chargino searches with neutralino searches at the Z resonance
implies a limit on the mass of the lightest neutralino which, for a heavy
sneutrino, is constrained to be above 31.0 GeV/c^2 for tan(beta) \geq 1.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figure
Search for composite and exotic fermions at LEP 2
A search for unstable heavy fermions with the DELPHI detector at LEP is
reported. Sequential and non-canonical leptons, as well as excited leptons and
quarks, are considered. The data analysed correspond to an integrated
luminosity of about 48 pb^{-1} at an e^+e^- centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV
and about 20 pb^{-1} equally shared between the centre-of-mass energies of 172
GeV and 161 GeV. The search for pair-produced new leptons establishes 95%
confidence level mass limits in the region between 70 GeV/c^2 and 90 GeV/c^2,
depending on the channel. The search for singly produced excited leptons and
quarks establishes upper limits on the ratio of the coupling of the excited
