Fluorescent conjugates of N-benzyloxycarbonyl protected gamma-aminobutyric acid were prepared by coupling to its C-terminus several polyheteroaromatic, based on the oxobenzopyran skeleton (trivially known as coumarin) and polyaromatic labels, such as naphthalene and pyrene. Photophysical properties were evaluated, as well as their behaviour towards photocleavage by irradiation in MeOH/HEPES buffer solution (80:20), in a photochemical reactor at different wavelengths (254, 300, 350 and 419 nm), followed by HPLC/UV monitoring. Thanks are due to the Foundation for Science and Technology (Portugal) for financial support through project PTDC/QUI/69607/2006 and a Ph.D. grant to M.J.G.F. A series of fluorescent conjugates of neurotransmitter amino acids, such as P-alanine, tyrosine, 3,4-dihydroxyplienylalanine (DOPA) and glutamic acid, were prepared by reaction with a suitable fluorophore, namely 1-chloromethyl-9-methoxy-3-oxo-3H-benzo[f]benzopyran. The photophysical properties of the resulting ester bioconjugates were evaluated as well as the stability to photolysis at different wavelengths of irradiation (250, 300, 350 and 419 nm). Thanks are due to the Foundation for Science and Technology (Portugal) for financial support through project PTDC/QUI/69607/2006 and a Ph.D. grant to M.J.G.F. Photorelease of amino acid neurotransmitters from pyrenylmethyl ester conjugates

The linkage of model neurotransmitter L-amino acids, such as glycine, alanine, beta-alanine, glutamic acid and gamma-aminobutyric acid, to a pyrenylmethyl group as the fluorescent moiety through an ester bond at their carboxylic functions at the main and side chains (in the case of glutamic acid) was investigated. The behaviour of the resulting fluorescent conjugates towards photocleavage was studied in different cleavage conditions, namely the wavelength of irradiation and the use of different solvents, in a photochemical reactor equipped with lamps of 254, 300, 350 and 419 nm, followed by HPLC/UV monitoring. Analysis and Improvement of the Packaging Sector of an Industrial Company

30th International Conference on Flexible Automation and Intelligent Manufacturing (FAIM2021) -15-18 June 2021, Athens, GreeceManual operations in manufacturing companies are still a common practice. This often results in high costs, high cycle times and therefore in lower productivity, particularly for companies operating in western countries. This is why many manufacturing companies relocated their production facilities in low age countries. This study was developed at a leading Portuguese material construction manufacturing company. The objective was to improve the packaging and labeling processes, that were identified as main bottlenecks in the factory. Lean was used to streamline these processes before being automated. This allowed for annual savings of 12432 €, with human operators being reallocated to other departments where they are more useful. Furthermore, cycle times were reduced by 42,9%, non-value-added activities were minimized, and operations with potentially high ergonomic risks were eliminated. In addition, a reduction of 84,3% in lithographed packaging was achieved, with a cost reduction of around 36 000 €/year, which is expected to continue in the forthcoming years.Teresa Pereira acknowledges the financial support of CIDEM- Research Center of Mechanical Engineering, FCT – Portuguese Foundation for the Development of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, under the Project UID/EMS/0615/2019info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Geoenvironmental study of gold mining tailings in a circular economy context: Santa Barbara, Minas Gerais, Brazil

    Get PDF
We characterized the tailings from the Santa Barbara tailings dam, which is located in Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, to: (i) identify its chemical, mineralogical, and metallurgical properties, and (ii) perform an environmental evaluation of the water at the surface of the tailings facility. The potential recovery of elements such as Sb, As, and Au was also considered for potential tailings reuse. The water was alkaline, with maximum pH values of ≈ 10, and contained potentially toxic elements, such as Sb (up to 0.500 mg/L), As (up to 0.080 mg/L), and Cu (up to 20 mg/L). Gold enrichment areas were found in the tailings dam, with concentrations up to 0.5 g/t. Alignment exists among tailings management, demand for critical raw materials, and increased interest in the processing of low-grade ores and mining waste, which is important in the context of the circular economy. They suggest that valorisation of tailings, although challenging, can be achieved by economic recovery of the more valuable metals. This work was funded the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) through projects UIDB/04683/2020, UIDP/04683/2020, Nano-MINENV 029259 (PTDC/CTAAMB/29259/2017), and by AngloGold Ashanti Brazil
