The name Manuel Linares Rivas (1867 -1938) usually calls to mind the name of his best-known play, La garra, written in 1914, but this is by no means the extent of his dramatic output; actually, he wrote more than sixty plays, some novels and also adapted and translated a number of foreign musical comedies for presentation in Spain. His plays resemble those of his contemporary Jacinto Benavente in themes and style. He also shared with Benavente and with the other members of the Generation of \u2798 a desire to regenerate Spain. He was able to use two very viable means to achieve this end: his plays and his legal career, for he was not only a lawyer, but a politician, magistrate, member of the Spanish parliament and senator for life
