A new look at the 2D Ising model from exact partition function zeros for large lattice sizes
A general numerical method is presented to locate the partition function
zeros in the complex beta plane for large lattice sizes. We apply this method
to the 2D Ising model and results are reported for square lattice sizes up tp
L=64. We also propose an alternative method to evaluate corrections to scaling
which relies only on the leading zeros. This method is illustrated with our
data.Comment: 9 pages, Latex, 3 figures. To appear in Int. J. Mod. Phys.

Was the GLE on May 17, 2012 linked with the M5.1-class flare the first in the 24th solar cycle?
On May 17, 2012 an M5.1-class flare exploded from the sun. An O-type coronal
mass ejection (CME) was also associated with this flare. There was an instant
increase in proton flux with peak at MeV, leading to S2 solar
radiation storm level. In about 20 minutes after the X-ray emission, the solar
particles reached the Earth. It was the source of the first (since December
2006) ground level enhancement (GLE) of the current solar cycle 24. The GLE was
detected by neutron monitors (NM) and other ground based detectors. Here we
present an observation by the Tupi muon telescopes (Niteroi, Brazil, , , 3 m above sea level) of the enhancement of muons at ground
level associated with this M5.1-class solar flare. The Tupi telescopes
registered a muon excess over background in the 5-min binning time
profile. The Tupi signal is studied in correlation with data obtained by
space-borne detectors (GOES, ACE), ground based neutron monitors (Oulu) and air
shower detectors (the IceTop surface component of the IceCube neutrino
observatory). We also report the observation of the muon signal possibly
associated with the CME/sheath striking the Earth magnetosphere on May 20,
2012. We show that the observed temporal correlation of the muon excess
observed by the Tupi muon telescopes with solar transient events suggests a
real physical connection between them. Our observation indicates that
combination of two factors, the low energy threshold of the Tupi muon
telescopes and the location of the Tupi experiment in the South Atlantic
Anomaly region, can be favorable in the study and detection of the solar
transient events. Our experiment provides new data complementary to other
techniques (space and ground based) in the study of solar physics.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure

Poor glycaemic control in Brazilian patients with type 2 diabetes attending the public healthcare system a cross-sectional study
Objectives: To describe the clinical profile of Brazilian patients with type 2 diabetes attending the public healthcare system and identify factors associated with poor glycaemic control.Design: Cross-sectional study.Setting: 14 centres in five regions of Brazil, including primary care units and outpatient clinics of University Hospitals.Participants: Patients with type 2 diabetes attending outpatient clinics of public healthcare system.Main outcome measured: Glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), centrally measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (National Glycohemoglobin Standardization Program certified). Results: A total of 5750 patients aged 61 10 years, with 11 8 years of diabetes duration (66% women, 56% nonwhite, body mass index: 28.0 5.3 kg/m(2)) were analysed. Mean HbA1c was 8.6 +/- 2.2%, and median HbA1c was 8.1% (6.9% to 9.9%). HbA1c 8%.Conclusions: the majority of Brazilian patients with type 2 diabetes attending the public healthcare system had HbA1c levels above recommended targets. the recognition of Northeast residents and non-white patients as vulnerable populations should guide future policies and actions to prevent and control diabetes.Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundo de Incentivo a Pesquisa (FIPE) of Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA)Pfizer PharmaceuticalHosp Clin Porto Alegre, Endocrine Div, Porto Alegre, RS, BrazilUniv Fed Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, RS, BrazilHosp Getulio Vargas, Endocrine Div, Manaus, Amazonas, BrazilUniv Fed Amazonas, Manaus, Amazonas, BrazilFed Univ Para, BR-66059 Belem, Para, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Endocrine Div, São Paulo, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Endocrine Div, São Paulo, BrazilWeb of Scienc
Facial movements during verbal and not verbal activities: an optoelectronic 3D study
Functional impairments of facial movements alter the quality of life, and their quantitative analysis is a key step in the description and grading of facial function and dysfunction. In this investigation we assessed the symmetry of lip movements in verbal and non verbal movements in healthy subjects. Fifteen healthy young adults (aged 24.7±4.6 y) were analysed using a 3D motion analyzer (SMART-E, BTS, Italy). All subjects had a clinically normal facial function. For each subject, 11 soft tissue landmarks were identified by a set of 5-mm round reflective markers: n, nasion; ft, right and left frontotemporale; ng, right and left naso-genian; cph, right and left crista philtri; ch, right and left cheilion; li, right and left lower lip midpoints. Each subject performed five standardized, maximum labial animations from rest: open mouth smile (OS); closed mouth smile (CS); spontaneous smile (SS); lip pursing (LP); vowels pronunciation. Ten repetitions of each expression were recorded without modifications of the marker positions. The total 3D mobility of right and left sides (unit: mm) was computed during smile animations (OS: 42±11.1 vs 44.1±10.8; CS: 30.5±11.4 vs 33.1±12.3; SS: 38.8±13.7 vs 39.5±12.7), lip purse (35.1±5.8 vs 34.9±7.1) and vowels pronunciation (a: 33.8±9.5 vs 33.4±11.2; e: 21.4±8.1 vs 21±9.4; i: 15.4±5.2 vs 15.4±5.7; o: 23.2±7.6 vs 22.2±6.6; u: 20.8±6.5 vs 18.8±6.2). The movements were symmetric (no significant differences were found, Student’s t-paired test, p>0.05). Additionally, the asymmetry indices of labial landmark displacement [1] were not significantly different from 0 in both not-verbal (OS: 2.9%; CS: 4.3%; SS: 3.5%; LP: 0.7%) and verbal (a: 1.2%; e: 1.7%; i: 0.5%; o: 1.7%; u: 5.2%) activities. In conclusion, in healthy young adults standardized labial movements were performed with similar mobility between right and left sides. Data will be used for the quantitative assessment of the impairments of patients with facial lesions
Mouse Estrous Cycle Identification Tool and Images
The efficiency of producing timed pregnant or pseudopregnant mice can be increased by identifying those in proestrus or estrus. Visual observation of the vagina is the quickest method, requires no special equipment, and is best used when only proestrus or estrus stages need to be identified. Strain to strain differences, especially in coat color can make it difficult to determine the stage of the estrous cycle accurately by visual observation. Presented here are a series of images of the vaginal opening at each stage of the estrous cycle for 3 mouse strains of different coat colors: black (C57BL/6J), agouti (CByB6F1/J) and albino (BALB/cByJ). When all 4 stages (proestrus, estrus, metestrus, and diestrus) need to be identified, vaginal cytology is regarded as the most accurate method. An identification tool is presented to aid the user in determining the stage of estrous when using vaginal cytology. These images and descriptions are an excellent resource for learning how to determine the stage of the estrous cycle by visual observation or vaginal cytology
