    Prevalence and factors associated with the consumption of fruit and vegetables by adolescents in public schools in Caruaru, Pernambuco state

Para avaliar os fatores associados ao consumo diário de FLV, realizou-se análise multivariável e hierarquizada, por regressão de Poisson, com variáveis sociodemográficas no primeiro nível, comportamentais no segundo e alimentares no terceiro. Os resultados mostraram que, dos 600 adolescentes entrevistados, 10% informaram não consumir frutas e 30,7% não consomem legumes/verduras. A prevalência de consumo diário de frutas foi 32,9% e de legumes/verduras 29%. Apenas 6,5% dos adolescentes consomem ambos os alimentos diariamente. Somente o consumo diário de legumes/verduras apresentou diferença segundo sexo (maior nas meninas). O consumo diário de frutas foi 63% maior entre residentes da zona urbana. Não ingerir álcool esteve associado com maior consumo de frutas, mas não com o de legumes/verduras. O consumo diário de frutas e legumes/verduras foi 2,4 vezes maior entre adolescentes que consomem arroz e feijão diariamente. O consumo diário de FLV entre adolescentes caruaruenses é inferior ao recomendado, estando associado ao sexo, zona de residência, consumo de álcool e de arroz e feijão. = This is a cross-sectional school-based study that evaluated the prevalence and associated factors of the daily intake of fruit and vegetables by adolescents at public schools in Caruaru, Pernambuco. Poisson regression with a hierarchical model, including sociodemographic variables in the first hierarchical level, behavioral variables in the second and diet-related variables in the third was used to assess the factors associated with fruit and vegetable intake. The results showed that of the 600 adolescents interviewed, 10% reported never eating fruit and 30.7% mentioned not eating vegetables. Prevalence of fruit intake was 32.9% and vegetables 29.0%. Only 6.5% reported eating both kinds of food daily. Merely the daily vegetable intake showed a significant difference according to sex (higher among girls). Daily fruit intake was 63% higher among adolescents living in urban areas. Not consuming alcohol was associated with higher fruit intake, though not to vegetable intake. Daily intake of fruits and vegetables was 2.4 times higher among adolescents who consumed rice and beans daily.     Avaliou-se a composição bromatológica e a degradação in situ da matéria seca da torta de mamona tostada (TMT), torta de mamona cozida (TMC), farelo de mamona (FM), farelo de mamona destoxificado (FMD), casca da mamona (CM), casca do pinhão-manso (CP) e semente do pinhão-manso (SP). Utilizou-se 4 g de amostra para incubação no rúmen dos ovinos por 0, 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48 e 72, para TMT, TMC, FM, FMD e SP, e acrescentaram-se os tempos de incubação de 96, 120 e 144 horas para CM e CP. Os teores de matéria seca (MS), proteína bruta, extrato etéreo (EE), cinza, fibra em detergente neutro, fibra em detergente ácido, hemicelulose e lignina variaram de 87,1 a 91,5%; 6,8 a 51,0%; 2,9 a 37,6%; 5,3 a 16,2%; 15,5 a 67,0%; 13,3 a 52,7%; 2,2 a 20,3% e 3,4 a 26,1%. As taxas de degradação da MS variaram de 1,15 a 10,87 %/h. De modo geral, os alimentos apresentaram-se ricos em proteína, com destaque para o FMD (51,0%), com taxa de degradação de 2,45%/h. Além disso, apresentaram elevado teor de lignina, principalmente a TMC (26,1%), cuja taxa de degradação foi 1,39%/h. O método de extração do óleo da TMT foi ineficiente, apresentando 28,4% de EE. A CM e CP mostraram potencial para substituir parcialmente volumosos. A SP apresentou elevado teor de EE, com alta fração solúvel e baixa taxa de degradação. The chemical composition and dry matter in situ degradation of toasted castorbean cake (TMT), cooked castorbean cake (TMC), castorbean meal (FM) (solvent extraction), detoxified castorbean meal (FMD), castorbean hulls (CM), physic nut hulls (CP) and physic nut seed (SP) were evaluated. Four grams per sample were incubated in rumen of sheep for 0; 6; 12; 18; 24; 36; 48 and 72 hours for TMT, TMC, FM, FMD and SP, and were added incubation in times 96; 120 and 144 hours for CM and CP. Dry matter, crude protein, ether extract (EE), ash, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, hemicellulose, and lignin contents ranged from 87.1 to 91.5%; 6.8 to 51.0%; 2.9 to 37.6%; 5.3 to 16.2%; 15.5 to 67.0%; 13.3 to 52.7%; 2.2 to 20.3% and 3.4 to 26.1%. The degradation rate ranged from 1.15 to 10.87. In general, the feeds showed high protein content, mainly FMD (51.0%), which has a degradation rate of 2.45%/h. Also, these by-product presented high lignin content, mainly the TMC (26.1%), which had a degradation rate of 1.39%/h. The process used in oil extraction of TMT was inefficient, because it had 28.4% EE content. CM and CP showed potential for partial replacement of roughages. The SP presented high EE content, high soluble fraction and low degradation rate

    Perceived physical fatigability predicts all-cause mortality in older adults

    BACKGROUND: Perceived physical fatigability is highly prevalent in older adults and associated with mobility decline and other health consequences. We examined the prognostic value of perceived physical fatigability as an independent predictor of risk of death among older adults. METHODS: Participants (N = 2 906), mean age 73.5 [SD, 10.4] years, 54.2% women, 99.7% white enrolled in the Long Life Family Study, were assessed at Visit 2 (2014-2017) with 2.7 [SD, 1.0] years follow-up. The Pittsburgh Fatigability Scale (PFS), a 10-item, self-administered validated questionnaire (score range 0-50, higher = greater fatigability) measured perceived physical fatigability at Visit 2. Deaths post-Visit 2 through December 31, 2019 were identified by family members notifying field centers, reporting during another family member\u27s annual phone follow-up, an obituary, or Civil Registration System (Denmark). We censored all other participants at their last contact. Cox proportional hazard models predicted mortality by fatigability severity, adjusted for family relatedness and other covariates. RESULTS: Age-adjusted PFS Physical scores were higher for those who died (19.1 [SE, 0.8]) compared with alive (12.2, [SE, 0.4]) overall, as well as across age strata (p \u3c .001), except for those 60-69 years (p = .79). Participants with the most severe fatigability (PFS Physical scores ≥ 25) were over twice as likely to die (hazard ratio, 2.33 [95% CI, 1.65-3.28]) compared with those who had less severe fatigability (PFS Physical scores \u3c 25) after adjustment. CONCLUSIONS: Our work underscores the utility of the PFS as a novel patient-reported prognostic indicator of phenotypic aging that captures both overt and underlying disease burden that predicts death
