Characterizing vibrational motion beyond internal coordinates

    Get PDF
We present a procedure for the decomposition of the normal modes of a composite system, including its rotations and translations, into those of fragments. The method permits—by the cross-contraction of dyads of mass-weighted displacement vectors, without recourse to valence coordinates—the direct comparison of nuclear motions of structurally similar but otherwise arbitrary fragments of molecules, and it leads to a quantitative definition of the similarity and the overlap of nuclear motions. We illustrate its usefulness by the quantification of the mixing of the normal modes of formic acid monomers upon the formation of a dimer, by the comparison of the overlap of the intermolecular normal vibrations of the water dimer computed with different ab initio schemes, and by the comparison of similarity and overlap of vibrations of (4S,7R)-galaxolide and (4S)-4-methylisochromane. The approach is expected to become a standard tool in vibrational analysi

A novel miniature superconducting converter for 1 kA magnets

    Get PDF
A miniature full-wave converter to control the current of a superconducting magnet is developed and tested in our institutes. Typical design values of the device are: AC voltage of 35 V, current of 7 A, and frequency 50-60 Hz; DC voltage o f f 0.2 V, and current of * 1 kA. An efficiency is better than 97% and a ‘cold’ volume is less than 1 litre. The rectification is achieved by means of thermally controlled superconducting switches. The high reliability of the device is ensured by means of a mechanical switch. The device provides an efficient way to a fine control of the magnet current

Alienation and reification phenomena in modern society can show themselves through different shapes, even inhabiting cultural objects that seem to be shallow and naïves. In this paper we adopt the perspectives of some authors critics of Modernity ‒Marx, Weber, Simmel, Luckács, Kracauer, Adorno y Horkheimer‒ in order to analyze a very special fragment of our time: Walt Disney World. Through a thorough study of one of its most iconic games called “Carousel of Progress” we attempt to expose the creation and transmission of an alienating praxis that hides behind the supposed banal character of recreation and leisure

Development of a 1 kA, 50 Hz Superconducting Converter

    Get PDF
A single-phase, thermally switched superconducting power converter operating at mains frequency is being developed and tested by the authors. Typical design values of the device are: input voltage of 220 V; input current of 7 A; output voltage of 1 V; and output current of 1 kA. The average output power is about 750 VA, with an efficiency better than 96%. Test results of the full scale power converter while ramping up and down a superconducting magnet and a comparison with the theory are presented. The power converter will be installed as a part of a power supply system controlling the current of a separator magnet located in Ukraine for an iron ore recycling process

The creation Krivoy Rog Botanical Gardens is caused by the environment pollution and a necessity to use plants for remediation of the contaminated lands. It is shown, that the collection fund of plants consisting from 923 taxons of trees and bushes, 541 flower decorative plants of the open ground, 267 taxons of the closed ground, 677 taxons of natural flora make the basis of the Gardens. The characteristic of the collection fund is given. The estimation of the prospects of botanical geographical areas for introduction of new species and their use for the environment optimization is given.

Feminist Discourses in Armenia: Five Activists’ Points of View on Contemporary Feminism in Erevan and Vanadzor

    Get PDF
This Open Fora constitutes a record and a transmission of the voices of five Armenian feminists, currently involved in several forms of activism. Interviews were led in January and and February 2022 in Erevan and Vanadzor. What is their definition of feminism? How do they carry out this struggle in Armenia? What are their sources of information and inspiration? We consider patriarchy spares no society. It therefore seems important to us to understand this system through the testimonies of those who struggle against its local manifestations. Increasing efficiency and environmental safety of cooling systems in a floating nuclear power plant

    Get PDF
In order to increase the reliability and safety of a floating nuclear power plant, the research proposes to apply closed-loop cooling systems for floating nuclear power plants’ cooling. Ship hull is proposed to be used as a surface of the heat exchanger, call ship hull heat exchanger. This paper presents detailed study on effect of the ship hull angle on the heat transfer coefficient and measures to improve the heat transfer coefficient. It is concluded that application of gas-liquid flows to the seaside surfaces of ship hull is one of the most effective ways for improving the heat transfer coefficient

    Get PDF

NbTi thermally controlled switches for superconducting converters with operation frequency up to 50 Hz.:Part 2: Theory and analysis

    Get PDF
A review is given of several known thermally controlled switches developed for superconducting converters. It shows their rather low frequency of operation (up to a few Hz) which strongly differs from the industrial frequency. This is not only due to the long recovery times of the switches, but also to the fact that the efficiency drops as the frequency increases. To develop switches suitable for 50 Hz, having reasonable efficiency, a theoretical model of the switch is necessary. Such a model is presented here, and illustrated for 50 Hz switches made from NbTi foil
