    High-efficiency, continuous-wave Fe:ZnSe mid-IR laser end pumped by an Er:YAP laser

    Fe:ZnSe lasers operating in the mid-IR spectral region have gained widespread attention due to their numerous potential applications. This study presents a high-efficiency, continuous-wave Fe:ZnSe laser end pumped by an Er:YAP laser at 2920 nm. The Er:YAP laser was home-constructed and generated an output power of 3.6 W and an average slope efficiency of 36.6% with a good beam quality (M2 ≤ 2). The Fe:ZnSe laser produced a maximum output power of 1 W at 4.06 µm for 2.1 W of absorbed pump power, corresponding to an average slope efficiency of 48%. Theoretical modeling of the continuous-wave Fe:ZnSe laser is presented to determine the prospects for further power scaling

    Detection of antibodies to the hepatitis E virus in domestic reindeer (<i>Rangifer tarandus</i>) in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)

    Introduction. Although domestic pigs and wild boars are the main reservoir of zoonotic hepatitis E virus (HEV) genotypes in temperate countries, the presence of antibodies to HEV (anti-HEV) in the indigenous population of circumpolar territories, i.e. outside the habitat of wild and domestic pigs, indicates the presence of an alternative reservoir of the virus. Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) may be a potential reservoir for HEV in the polar regions. The purpose of the study was to determine the prevalence of anti-HEV among domestic reindeer in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Materials and methods. Sera from 497 domestic reindeer from the Oymyakon (n = 425) and Ust-Yansky districts (n = 72) of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) were tested for anti-HEV. A commercial ELISA kit DS-ELISA-ANTI-HEV-G (Diagnostic Systems-Stolitsa LLC, Russia) was used for detection of anti-HEV IgG, but a rabbit polyclonal antibody against deer IgG labeled with horseradish peroxidase (KPL, USA) at a dilution of 1 : 100 in phosphate-buffered saline were used instead of the human specific conjugate from the kit. Results. The average detection rate of anti-HEV in reindeer sera was 15.5% (95% CI: 12.6–19.0%). The detection rate of anti-HEV significantly increased with age, from 3.5% (95% CI: 1.1–9.0%) in calves aged 3–6 months to 25.0% (95% CI: 1.6 –36.5%) in deer aged 2–4 years (p 0.0001). From this age group, anti-HEV detection rates reached a plateau, not differing significantly between older age groups (p 0.05). The average anti-HEV detection rate among reindeer 2 years of age and older was 19.0% (95% CI: 15.3–23.4%). There were no statistically significant differences in the frequency of anti-HEV detection between female and male reindeer, both among adult animals and among calves. Conclusion. The observed anti-HEV detection rates among domestic reindeer in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) indicate that infection caused by HEV or an antigenically similar virus is common in these animals. The dynamics of antibody accumulation in the reindeer population indicates that infection apparently occurs during the first two years of life

    Coverage with timely administered vaccination against hepatitis b virus and its influence on the prevalence of HBV infection in the regions of different endemicity

Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.Universal hepatitis B vaccination of newborns was implemented in Russia starting from 1998. From 1998 to 2019, the incidence of acute hepatitis B reduced from 43.8 to 0.57 cases per 100,000 population. Here, we assessed the timely coverage of newborns with the birth dose (HepB-BD), second dose (HepB-2nd), and three vaccine doses (HepB3) in two remote regions of Russia with low (Belgorod Oblast) and high (Yakutia) levels of hepatitis B virus (HBV) endemicity. Vaccination data were obtained from the medical records of 1000 children in Yakutia and 2182 children in Belgorod Oblast. Sera of healthy volunteers from Belgorod Oblast (n = 1754) and Yakutia (n = 1072) across all age groups were tested for serological markers of HBV to assess the infection prevalence and herd immunity. Average HepB-BD coverage was 99.2% in Yakutia and 89.4% in Belgorod Oblast (p < 0.0001) and in both regions varied significantly, from 66% to 100%, between medical centers. The principal reason for the absence of HepB-BD was parent refusal, which accounted for 63.5% of cases of non-vaccination (83/123). While timely HepB-2nd coverage was only 55.4%–64.7%: HepB3 coverage by the age of one year exceeded 90% in both study regions. HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) prevalence in the 1998–2019 birth cohort was 0.2% (95% CI: 0.01–1.3%) in Belgorod Oblast and 3.2% (95% CI: 1.9–5.2%) in Yakutia. The proportion of persons testing negative for both antibodies to HBsAg (anti-HBs) and antibodies to HBV core antigen (anti-HBc) in the 1998–2019 birth cohort was 26.2% (125/481) in Belgorod Oblast and 32.3% (162/501) in Yakutia. We also assessed the knowledge of and attitude towards vaccination among 782 students and teachers of both medical and non-medical specialties from Belgorod State University. Only 60% of medical students knew that hepatitis B is a vaccine-preventable disease. Both medical and nonmedical students, 37.8% and 31.3%, respectively, expressed concerns about safety and actual necessity of vaccination. These data indicate the need to introduce a vaccine delivery audit system, improve medical education with respect to vaccination strategies and policies, and reinforce public knowledge on the benefits of vaccination.Peer reviewe

    Dynamics of Ultrafast Phase Transitions in (001) Si on the Shock-Wave Front

    We demonstrate an ultrafast (<0.1 ps) reversible phase transition in silicon (Si) under ultrafast pressure loading using molecular dynamics. Si changes its structure from cubic diamond to β-Sn on the shock-wave front. The phase transition occurs when the shock-wave pressure exceeds 11 GPa. Atomic volume, centrosymmetry, and the X-ray-diffraction spectrum were revealed as effective indicators of phase-transition dynamics. The latter, being registered in actual experimental conditions, constitutes a breakthrough in the path towards simple X-ray optical cross-correlation and pump-probe experiments

    High-Power Solid-State Near- and Mid-IR Ultrafast Laser Sources for Strong-Field Science

    This review highlights the development of ultrafast sources in the near- and middle-IR range, developed in the laboratory of Nonlinear Optics and Superstrong Laser Fields at Lomonosov Moscow State University. The design of laser systems is based on a powerful ultrafast Cr:Forsterite system as a front-end and the subsequent nonlinear conversion of radiation into the mid-IR, THz, and UV spectral range. Various schemes of optical parametric amplifiers based on oxide and non-oxide crystals pumped with Cr:Forsterite laser can receive pulses in the range of 4–6 µm with gigawatt peak power. Alternative sources of mid-IR ultrashort laser pulses at a relatively high (MHz) repetition rate are also proposed as difference frequency generators and as a femtosecond mode-locked oscillator based on an Fe:ZnSe crystal. Iron ion-doped chalcogenides (Fe:ZnSe and Fe:CdSe) are shown to be effective gain media for broadband high-peak power mid-IR pulses in this spectral range. The developed sources pave the way for advanced research in strong-field science

    Optical Diagnostics of Supercritical CO2 and CO2-Ethanol Mixture in the Widom Delta

    The supercritical CO2 (scCO2) is widely used as solvent and transport media in different technologies. The technological aspects of scCO2 fluid applications strongly depend on spatial&ndash;temporal fluctuations of its thermodynamic parameters. The region of these parameters&rsquo; maximal fluctuations on the p-T (pressure-temperature) diagram is called Widom delta. It has significant practical and fundamental interest. We offer an approach that combines optical measurements and molecular dynamics simulation in a wide range of pressures and temperatures. We studied the microstructure of supercritical CO2 fluid and its binary mixture with ethanol in a wide range of temperatures and pressures using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. MD is used to retrieve a set of optical characteristics such as Raman spectra, refractive indexes and molecular refraction and was verified by appropriate experimental measurements. We demonstrated that in the Widom delta the monotonic dependence of the optical properties on the CO2 density is violated. It is caused by the rapid increase of density fluctuations and medium-sized (20&ndash;30 molecules) cluster formation. We identified the correlation between cluster parameters and optical properties of the media; in particular, it is established that the clusters in the Widom delta acts as a seed for clustering in molecular jets. MD demonstrates that the cluster formation is stronger in the supercritical CO2-ethanol mixture, where the extended binary clusters are formed; that is, the nonlinear refractive index significantly increased. The influence of the supercritical state in the cell on the formation of supersonic cluster jets is studied using the Mie scattering technique

    Universal Single-Dose Vaccination against Hepatitis A in Children in a Region of High Endemicity

    Since August 2012, universal single-dose vaccination in children aged at least three years has been implemented in the Republic of Tuva, which was previously the region most affected by hepatitis A in Russia. The objective of this cross-sectional study was the assessment of the immunological and epidemiological effectiveness of vaccination program five years following its implementation. In the pre-vaccination period, anti-HAV antibody detection rates in Tuva was 66.0% [95% CI: 56.3&ndash;74.6%] in children aged 10&ndash;14 years and reached a plateau (&gt;95%) by age 20&ndash;29 years. Annual incidence rates in children under 18 years of age peaked at 450&ndash;860 per 100,000 in pre-vaccination years but dropped to 7.5 per 100,000 in this age group and to 3.2 per 100,000 in the total population one year after the start of vaccination. Since 2016, no cases of hepatitis A has been reported in Tuva. Serum anti-HAV antibodies were quantified in samples from healthy children following single-dose vaccination. Protective anti-HAV antibody concentrations (&ge;10 mIU/mL) were detected in 98.0% (95% CI: 96.2&ndash;99.0% (442/451)) of children tested one month after single-dose immunization, in 93.5% (95% CI: 91.0&ndash;95.4% (477/510)) and in 91.1% (95% CI: 88.2&ndash;93.4% (422/463)) of children one year and five years after single-dose immunization, respectively. Anti-HAV antibody geometric mean concentrations were similar in sera collected one month, one year, and five years following single-dose vaccination: 40.24 mIU/mL, 44.96 mIU/mL, and 57.73 mIU/mL, respectively (p &gt; 0.05). These data confirm that single-dose vaccination is an effective method of bringing hepatitis A under control in a short period of time in a highly endemic region
