    Progettare l’inclusione tra Differenziazione Didattica e Universal Design for Learning: approcci, opportunità e prospettive

    Differentiated Instruction and Universal Design for Learning are didactical models that are entering teachers’ design logics. Appearing in the national context in recent times, two perspectives present multiple points of convergence, such as the concepts of inclusion and accessibility that they want to convey and the attention they both pay to valuing the differences of each pupil, but also some elements of diversity. In this contribution we intend to analyze the salient and constituent elements of both models, starting with the analysis of their original matrices and, through a path of historical, cultural and methodological reconstruction, provide insights to read the contributions that both perspectives bring as possibilities for teaching design focused on inclusion.La Differenziazione didattica e l’Universal Design for Learning sono modelli didattici che stanno entrando nelle logiche progettuali degli insegnanti. Comparsi sul territorio nazionale in epoca recente, le due prospettive presentano molteplici punti di convergenza, quali i concetti di inclusione e di accessibilità e l’attenzione che entrambi riservano alla valorizzazione delle differenze di ogni alunno, ma anche alcuni elementi di divergenza. In questo contributo si intende analizzare gli elementi salienti e costitutivi di entrambi i modelli, a partire dall’analisi delle loro matrici originali e, attraverso un percorso di ricostruzione storica, culturale e metodologica, fornire spunti per leggere i contributi che entrambe le prospettive portano come possibilità di progettazione didattica attenta all’inclusione

OBJECTIVE: To determine if the APOC3 variants alter the susceptibility of obese subjects to develop liver damage, hypertrigliceridaemia, and insulin-resistance. METHODS: The study was carried out on 585 unrelated obese Italians (median body mass index BMI = 41 kg/m2) who were genotyped for the rs2854116 and rs2854117 variants. All participants underwent oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT), with measurement of glucose, insulin, lipid parameters. Indices of insulin-resistance (HOMA and ISI) were calculated. Alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) were used as markers of liver injury. RESULTS: The study subjects were divided into two groups: those homozygous for the wild-type alleles at both SNPs (-482C and -455T alleles) and those who were carriers of at least one variant allele or both (-482T, -455C or both). Also each SNP was analysed independently. No significant differences were found in ALT and AST levels and in the lipid profile between the two groups. Insulin concentrations, glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity were similar in the two groups. CONCLUSION: We did not identify any significant association between APOC3 polymorphisms and fatty liver disease, lipids, and insulin-resistance in obese subjects, thus not confirming the suggested role of these APOC3 gene sequence variants

    Does the natural "microcosm" created by Tuber aestivum affect soil microarthropods? A new hypothesis based on Collembola in truffle culture

    microarthropods play an important role in fungi dispersion, but little is still known about the interaction between truffle and soil microarthropods. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of the truffle Tuber aestivum to modify soil biogeochemistry (i.e. create a zone of scarce vegetation around the host plant, called a burn or brûlé) and to highlight the effects of the brûlé on the soil fauna community. We compared soil microarthropod communities found in the soil inside versus outside the T. aestivum brûlé with the chemistry of soil collected inside versus outside the brûlé. The study was carried out in three Mediterranean areas, two in Italy and one in Spain. The results confirmed the ability of T. aestivum to modify soil biogeochemistry in the brûlé: pH was higher and total organic carbon tended to be lower inside the brûlé compared to outside. Soil fauna communities showed some interesting differences. Some groups, such as Symphyla and Pauropoda, adapted well to the soil; some Collembolan families, and biodiversity and soil quality indices were generally higher outside the brûlé. Folsomia sp. showed higher abundance in the soil of the brûlé compared to outside. The results suggest that some Collembola groups may be attracted by the fungal metabolites produced by T. aestivum, while other Collembola and other microarthropods may find an unfavourable environment in the soil of the brûlé. The next steps will be to confirm this hypothesis and to extend the study to other keys groups such as nematodes and earthworms and to link fluctuations of soil communities with the biological phases of truffle growth

    Oral hygiene practices in nurseries (0-3 years) in the cities of Pavia and Vigevano

    AimThis study was conducted to evaluate attention to and knowledge of oral care in children aged 0–3 years, on the basis of data collected from early years educators working with this age group. Information was also collected about the oral hygiene practices adopted in nurseries and the types of food provided, with the aim of increasing knowledge and raising awareness of this topic.Materials and methodsA questionnaire was created using the “Google Forms” program and sent to all the 47 nurseries in the city of Pavia and Vigevano.ResultsTwenty establishments agreed to take part in the research. Assessment of knowledge and of awareness of oral care among early years educators caring for children in the age range 0–3 years revealed variability and some confusion. The results showed a general lack of attention to oral care in the period before the milk teeth appear, as well as limited use of gauze swabs. There was generally some use of educational play focusing on this issue, albeit not daily across all the nurseries participating in the survey. Nurseries rarely had the support of a professional dental hygienist to raise awareness among early years educators and parents.ConclusionsThe findings obtained through this study indicate that, in the area surveyed, there is a lack of widespread knowledge and awareness of oral prevention in young children, and of the oral hygiene maintenance techniques to use in this age group. This suggests a need to develop preventive protocols to improve knowledge and awareness of children's oral health among the adults who care for them

    Association of FTO Polymorphisms with Early Age of Obesity in Obese Italian Subjects

    Obesity is recognized as a major health problem worldwide. Genetic factors play a major role in obesity, and genomewide association studies have provided evidence that several common variants within the fat mass- and obesity-associated (FTO) gene are significantly associated with obesity. Very limited data is available on FTO in the Italian population. Aims of our study are to investigate: (1) the association of FTO gene SNPs rs9939609 and rs9930506 with body mass index (BMI) and obesity-related parameters in a large cohort (n = 752) of Italian obese subjects; (2) the association between the two FTO SNPs and age of onset of obesity. Our results demonstrate a strong association between FTO SNPs rs9939609 (P < 0.043) and rs9930506 (P < 0.029) with BMI in the Italian population. FTO rs9930506 was significantly associated with higher BMI in a G allele dose-dependent manner (BMI + 1.4 kg/m2 per G allele). We also observed that the association with BMI of the two FTO variants varied with age, with the carriers of the risk alleles developing an increase in body weight earlier in life. In conclusion, our study further demonstrates a role of the genetic variability in FTO on BMI in a large Italian population

    Search for genetic variants in the p66Shc longevity gene by PCR-single strand conformational polymorphism in patients with early-onset cardiovascular disease.

    Background: Among the possible candidate genes for atherosclerosis experimental data point towards the longevity gene p66(Shc). The p66(Shc) gene determines an increase of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), affecting the rate of oxidative damage to nucleic acids. Knock-out p66(Shc-/-) mice show reduction of systemic oxidative stress, as well as of plasma LDL oxidation, and reduced atherogenic lesions. Thus, p66(Shc) may play a pivotal role in controlling oxidative stress and vascular dysfunction in vivo. Methods: We searched for sequence variations in the p66(Shc) specific region of the Shc gene and its upstream promoter by PCR-SSCP in a selected group of early onset coronary artery disease ( CAD) subjects (n. 78, mean age 48.5 +/- 6 years) and in 93 long-living control subjects ( mean age 89 +/- 6 years). Results: The analysis revealed two variant bands. Sequencing of these variants showed two SNPs: -354T > C in the regulatory region of p66(Shc) locus and 92C > T in the p66 specific region (CH2). Both these variants have never been described before. The first substitution partially modifies the binding consensus sequence of the SpI transcription factor, and was detected only in two heterozygous carriers (1 CAD subjects and 1 control subject). The 92C > T substitution in the CH2 region consists in an amino acid substitution at codon 31 (proline to leucine, P31L), and was detected in heterozygous status only in one CAD subject. No subjects homozygous for the two newly described SNPs were found. Conclusion: Only two sequence variations in the p66(Shc) gene were observed in a total of 171 subjects, and only in heterozygotes. Our observations, in accordance to other studies, suggest that important variations in the p66(Shc) gene may be extremely rare and probably this gene is not involved in the genetic susceptibility to CAD

    Positive effects of Nordic Walking on anthropometric and metabolic variables in women with type 2 diabetes mellitus

    Objectives. — Lack of physical activity predisposes people to chronic diseases including diabetes mellitus, obesity, and coronary artery diseases. Identifying forms of physical activity is warranted for prevention of these chronic diseases. Daily exercise has also been considered a significant contributing factor in the management of type 2 diabetes. Nordic Walking is shown to be easy to teach and learn, simple and adaptable to subjects with diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Nordic Walking allows training of about 90% of body muscles in the active propulsion phase, thus increasing energy expenditure by 30 to 50%. Aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of Nordic Walking structured training in a group of female patients with type 2 diabetes, looking at changes in anthropometric, metabolic and bioelectrical variables pre- and post-activities.     Glycated hemoglobin for the diagnosis of diabetes and prediabetes: Diagnostic impact on obese and lean subjects, and phenotypic characterization

    Aims/Introduction Measurement of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) has been recommended for the diagnosis of diabetes and prediabetes. However, epidemiological studies have shown significant discordance between HbA1c and glucose-based tests. Of the factors that could influence agreement between HbA1c and the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), bodyweight has not been fully evaluated. The aims of the present study were to evaluate the impact of HbA1c criteria to diagnose diabetes and prediabetes compared with OGTT, and to examine HbA1c in relation to body mass index. Materials and Methods Two cohorts were studied, one from an obesity clinic (n = 592) and one from subjects undergoing screening for diabetes (n = 462). All underwent OGTT and HbA1c measurement. Results In the obese cohort, HbA1c ≄6.5% (≄48 mmol/mol) showed a sensitivity of 69.3% for diabetes, whereas HbA1c 5.7–6.4% (39–46 mmol/mol) did not identify prediabetes well (sensitivity 39.1%).
