Practical wavelet design on the sphere

We address the question of designing isotropic analysis functions on the sphere which are perfectly limited in the spectral domain and optimally localized in the spatial domain. This work is motivated by the need of localized analysis tools in domains where the data is lying on the sphere, e.g.{} the science of the Cosmic Microwave Background. Our construction is derived from the localized frames introduced by Narcowich, Petrushev, Ward, 2006. The analysis frames are optimized for given applications and compared numerically using various criteria

Lymphocyte glutathione status in relation to their Con A proliferative response

AbstractWe studied the intracellular total, oxidized and reduced glutathione levels in thymus and spleen rat lymphocytes cultured with or without Con A and 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME). After 48 h culture, the total glutathione level decreased and the oxidized glutathione level increased in the two types of unstimulated and stimulated cells. In the presence of 2-ME, the tritiated thymidine incorporation increased in splenocytes but not in thymocytes; on the other hand, the two types of stimulated cells increased their total and oxidized glutathione content. The enhancement of the GSSG/GSH + GSSG ratio, irrespective of culture conditions, indicates a severely disturbed redox state of the cells. 2-ME acts on the glutathione synthesis of stimulated lymphocytes but is unable to maintain a normal redox state of these cells

Comportement mécanique d'un enduit projeté sur son support pour la réhabilitation thermique des bâtiments - expérimentations à l'échelle d'un mur

    Get PDF

This slide presentation reviews the Integrated Systems Research Program (ISRP) with a focus on the work being done on reduction of environmental impact from aeronautics. The focus of the ISRP is to Conduct research at an integrated system-level on promising concepts and technologies and explore, assess, or demonstrate the benefits in a relevant environment. The presentation reviews the criteria for an ISRP project, and discusses the Environmentally Responsible Aviation (ERA) project, and the technical challenges

Directing peptide crystallization through curvature control of nanotubes ‡

    Get PDF
International audienceIn the absence of efficient crystallization methods, the molecular structures of fibrous assemblies have so far remained rather elusive. In this paper, we present a rational method to crystallize the lanreotide octapeptide by modification of a residue involved in a close contact. Indeed, we show that it is possible to modify the curvature of the lanreotide nanotubes and hence their diameter. This fine tuning leads to crystallization because the radius of curvature of the initially bidimensional peptide wall can be increased up to a point where the wall is essentially flat and a crystal is allowed to grow along a third dimension. By comparing X-ray diffraction data and Fourier transform Raman spectra, we show that the nanotubes and the crystals share similar cell parameters and molecular conformations, proving that there is indeed a structural continuum between these two morphologies. These results illustrate a novel approach to crystallization and represent the first step towards the acquisition of an Å-resolution structure of the lanreotide nanotubes β-sheet assembly

No sex scandals please, we're French: French attitudes towards politicians' public and private conduct

The notion of distinct ‘public’ and ‘private’ spheres underpins much normative and practical engagement with political misconduct. What is less clear is whether citizens draw distinctions between misdemeanours in the ‘public’ and ‘private’ spheres, and whether they judge these in systematically different ways. This paper explores attitudes to political misconduct in France. French citizens are often said to be particularly relaxed about politicians’ private affairs, but there has been little empirical evidence for this proposition. Drawing on original survey data, this paper demonstrates clearly that French citizens draw a sharp distinction between politicians’ public and private transgressions, and are more tolerant of the latter

Effect of selenium supplementation on CD4 T-cell recovery, viral suppression, morbidity and quality of life of HIV-infected patients in Rwanda: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Abstract

Background

Low levels of serum selenium are associated with increased risk of mortality among HIV+ patients in East Africa. We aim to assess the effect of selenium supplementation on CD4 cell count, HIV viral load, opportunistic infections, and quality of life in HIV-infected patients in Rwanda.

Methods and Design

A 24-month, multi-centre, patient and provider-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial involving 300 pre-antiretroviral therapy (ART) HIV-infected patients will be carried out at two sites in Rwanda. Patients ≥ 21 years of age with documented HIV infection, CD4 cell count of 400-650 cells/mm3, and not yet on ART will be recruited. Patients will be randomized at each study site using a randomized block design to receive either the selenium micronutrient supplement or an identically appearing placebo taken once daily. The primary outcome is a composite of time from baseline to reduction of CD4 T lymphocyte count below 350 cells/mm3 (confirmed by two measures at least one week apart), or start of ART, or the emergence of a documented CDC-defined AIDS-defining illness. An intention-to-treat analysis will be conducted using stepwise regression and structural equation modeling.

Discussion

Micronutrient interventions that aim to improve CD4 cell count, decrease opportunistic infections, decrease HIV viral load, and ultimately delay initiation of more costly ART may be beneficial, particularly in resource-constrained settings, such as sub-Saharan Africa. Additional trials are needed to determine if micro-supplementation can delay the need for more costly ART among HIV-infected patients. If shown to be effective, selenium supplementation may be of public health importance to HIV-infected populations, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and other resource-constrained settings.

Trial Registration

NCT01327755</p
